Chapter 3
I arrived at the hospital and saw Daniel lying quietly in bed, serene and sweet like an angel.
Replacing the bedside flowers with a fresh bouquet, I prepared warm water to gently clean him and carefully massaged his atrophied limbs, weakened from prolonged immobility.
“Daniel, sister came to visit you today. Did you sleep well? Look, I brought your favorite sunflowers again.”
“Life’s been fine for me, so don’t worry about your sister. I’m planning to start looking for a new job soon. Luke Crawford doesn’t need me to take care of him anymore now that his eyesight is restored.”

“You must be happy that Luke Crawford can see again, right? He used to be so fond of you, always bringing you snacks and toys whenever he visited. He was just been really busy lately, so he hadn’t been here for a long time. And he recently got engaged–to Bella White, my very beautiful college classmate. Do you remember her?”
I forced a pale smile and gazed at Daniel’s perpetually peaceful face. Gently, I reached out and stroked his head.
His hair had been shaved off and hadn’t grown back much yet.
A pang of sadness hit me. Daniel used to have thick, shiny black hair that always seemed so full of life, but now, he could only lie here day after day, weak and silent.

Quickly wiping away the tears at the corner of my eyes, I smiled again and said, “Daniel, Luke Crawford doesn’t need me anymore, so it’s just the two of us from now on. Let’s face life together, okay?”
I kept talking to Daniel, sharing bits and pieces of my thoughts, and I tucked him in properly before leaving the room.
To my surprise, I ran into an old
acquaintance, Leo Davis, right outside the
room.
“Sylvia?” His eyes showed a trace of surprise upon seeing me.
Looking at him in his white coat, I mustered a smile and said, “Leo Davis, congratulations on achieving your dream.” I knew he had always wanted to become a doctor.

He nodded, his gaze tinged with concern as he studied me. “I’m working in the cardiothoracic department upstairs. I heard Daniel was here and came to check on him. You don’t look so well.””
I gently rubbed my stomach, which was faintly aching, and shook my head. “I skipped breakfast this morning–probably just
hungry. It’s nothing.”
“Sylvia…” He seemed like he wanted to say more, but a nurse called for him at that
moment.
I shook my head and said, “I’m fine. You go ahead, I need to leave anyway. Let’s catch up another time.”
I turned away hastily, but Leo Davis grabbed my arm. He hesitated for a moment, his eyes full of concern as he looked at me.

“Sylvia, I heard you’ve been with Luke Crawford all these years?”
I looked at the obvious concern in his eyes and felt a pang of pain in my heart.”Yes, I replied with a faint, bitter smile. “I got what I wanted. Aren’t you happy for me?”
Had it not been for running into Leo Davis, I might have forgotten that there were once good times between Luke Crawford and me.
