Chapter 4
In college, I always liked to follow Luke Crawford around. Honestly, I didn’t have any ulterior motives; I just wanted to see him every day and make him happy.
Luke Crawford once told me he wanted to focus on his studies first. Even so, he was really good to me.
He used to ruffle my hair and treat me to snacks, saying that my smile made him happy too.
He helped me with Advanced Mathematics, the subject I struggled with the most, in the library.
He invited me to watch his basketball games and speeches.

On weekends, he’d take me and Daniel to all kinds of fun places.
Back then, I truly believed Luke Crawford might like me–just a little. Even though he had turned me down before, why else would he treat me so well?
But then, rumors started spreading on campus that Luke Crawford and Bella White were together.
When he looked at me, the smile
disappeared from his face. He frowned more often, becoming colder and more distant.
I thought it was my fault–that I wasn’t doing enough. So I kept smiling and trailing after him, until one day he suddenly turned around, his voice harsher than I’d ever heard
- it.

“Sylvia Green, you’re so annoying! Stop showing up in front of me!”
It was the first time I saw Luke Crawford like that, the first time I saw unmistakable disgust in his eyes.
My heart bled, but I forced a smile and said, “Luke Crawford, if you don’t like it, I won’t bother you anymore.”
From that day forward, I only dared to watch him from afar.
I watched him walk with Bella White, watched him smile at her, and speak to her in that soft, gentle voice.
Leo Davis used to ask me back then, “Sylvia, is Luke Crawford really that great? Is it only him for you?”

Every time, I nodded without hesitation.
Looking back now, it feels like a cruel joke that fate played on me.
