Chapter 3
Over the years, I had tried to guess the code, but after repeated failures, I grew afraid. I didn’t want to confirm what I had long suspected.
I was like an ostrich, burying my head in the fantasy of a happiness I had woven for myself, unwilling to face the truth.
But now, the harsh reality ripped away all my illusions, leaving the brutal truth exposed before me.
“Sit down for a moment, I’ll get you some hot water.”
Steve helped Evelyn onto the couch before getting up to fetch her a drink.

I watched as he carefully removed her heavy down jacket, and then stopped her as she reached for a soda from the fridge.
“You’re pregnant. You can’t have anything cold.”
Steve, normally so aloof, was patient and tender as he explained, reminding me of how he had once told her why she couldn’t have cold drinks during her period.
My heart felt as if an invisible hand had clenched it tightly, the pain making it hard for me to breathe.
Evelyn pouted slightly and complained that her wound hurt.
Steve smiled indulgently and, when she lifted her hand, leaned down to gently blow on her wound.

Evelyn looked pleased, but then said she was hungry.
Steve smiled and told her to sit and wait while he made her some noodles.
As Evelyn lounged on the couch, she disdainfully turned down the wedding photo of Steve and me. “Steve, just order takeout. There’s no need to go through all that trouble.”
But Steve didn’t listen. He muttered, “Takeout isn’t clean, and it’s bad for your health.”
When Steve opened the fridge and saw the noodles I had made by hand, he froze for a moment.
I didn’t know what crossed his mind, but he bypassed the fresh noodles I had made and

instead grabbed a pack of instant noodles from the back.
His movements were swift and practiced as he washed vegetables and chopped scallions–completely unlike the image of the pampered heir of the Buck family.
How long had it been since I’d seen him like this?
The warm scene before me felt like a distant
memory.
From the time we started dating to our marriage, Steve had never lifted a finger in the kitchen. I had taken care of everything for him.
When Evelyn left him and married someone else, I was the one who stayed by his side, pulling him out of that dark year.

A year later, Steve suddenly asked me to date him.
I had been overjoyed and immediately agreed.
Afterward, he took over the family business, drinking frequently. Each time he drank, he would complain about stomach pain.
Back then, I would always make noodles for him.

He didn’t like store–bought noodles, so taught myself to make them from scratch, spending countless hours perfecting the skill.
I was consumed with the thought of taking care of him, hoping he would feel my love.

I stubbornly believed that if I was good enough to him, one day he would notice, and love me as he loved Evelyn.
When I finally mastered the art of noodle–making, Steve saw the blisters on my hands and frowned slightly. For the first time, he bent down and gently blew on my wounds.
I had been over the moon, daring to hug Steve and playfully ask, “Steve, will you always be this good to me?”
The moment I asked, I regretted it.
I was about to apologize when his cool voice came from above, “Sure.”
Back then, he had promised me.
But now, that promise was broken.

Of course, Evelyn was his one and only. All his promises were made just for her.
