Chapter 4
“Lyn, what are you doing here?”
Fawzaan went to park the car and told me to come up first and decide what I want to eat. As soon as I stepped out of the elevator, I saw Teon hurrying towards me with a food container.
Looking closer, I noticed his eyes darting, clearly uneasy and slightly tense, trying to hide the food box behind his back.
But the logo on the food container was from the place Hiral loves. Teon used to bring her meals every day, feeding her with cheer, and when he couldn’t make it, he’d call me for help.
In the past, I would have forced a smile,

pretending to be gracious while covering the awkwardness with a lie.
But now, I’m tired of pretending; all I want is to shrug it off.
“Eating,” I replied flatly.
“With whom? Are you alone?” Teon probed, clearly torn between what he held and what he thought.
“It’s none of your business.”
I turned to leave, not wanting Teon to know I was meeting Fawzaan for a meal, which would just create unnecessary trouble for him.
“Wait, Lyn. Can we find some time to really talk?” Teon blocked my path with his left hand.

“There’s nothing to discuss. Let’s just finalize the divorce papers.”
I wasn’t interested in a conversation with Teon; it would only lead to the same old conclusion–why go there at all?
“Listen, Lyn…” Teon, not giving up, reached out as if to hold me back.
“Let go!” I shoved his hand away, but the difference in strength between us made it a feeble attempt.
“Lyn, I…”
“What are you doing!” Fawzaan’s voice boomed as he dashed over, pulling Teon’s hand away and shielding me behind him.
“Fawzaan, what–how are you here!”

Teon’s eyes widened, staring incredulously at the man in front of him.
“You, you two…”
Backing up a couple of steps, he glared at us, pointing a finger as he spoke angrily.
“You’re having a meal with him?”
The way he looked at me made me feel guilty as if I’d done him a great wrong.
I didn’t want to answer his question. Grabbing Fawzaan’s arm, I turned to leave.
“No one’s leaving until we clear this up,” Teon declared, blocking our path, still clinging to the food container.
“What’s there to say–a joke,” Fawzaan

dismissed, pushing past Teon and guiding me forward.
Teon stumbled like a toy, easily knocked aside.
“Hey, everyone! Listen up! She’s married but hanging out with another man! It’s broad daylight, and she’s cheating!”
I was stunned, turning back at his words. I couldn’t believe he’d accuse me of “cheating.”
As the crowd grew, Teon’s theatrics only intensified.
“Come judge for yourselves, folks! This adulterous pair strolling around in daylight- imagine where they end up at night!”
“Pity me, everyone! I haven’t even made it

home, and my wife’s already run off! How am I supposed to live?”
Filthy accusations spewed from Teon’s mouth, gathering spit as he tried to pin me to a pedestal of disgrace.
He once walked around with Hiral, shopping and even bringing her home for meals; yet, I never threw words like those at them. Now, unprovoked, I’m branded a “cheat.”
The bystanders began watching me and Fawzaan, their mouths moving with whispers, examining us with disdainful looks.
Fawzaan’s face was stone, yet he still shielded me, cautious of anyone pushing against me, whispering softly in my ear, “Leave first, I’ll handle this.”

I appreciated Fawzaan’s kindness, someone not obligated to me, treating me far better than the man crying and causing a scene on the ground.
But I couldn’t let these slanderous words tarnish both of us any longer.
I’ve endured for a year; I refuse to remain silent in the days to come.
