Chapter 9
On the tenth day in West City, I received a call from my lawyer.
Erik agreed to divorce me.
And, strangely enough, Erik transferred all of his assets to me.
I wasn’t being pretentious–if he was willing to give, I was willing to accept.
Thus, Erik and I signed the papers.
We just had to wait for the one–month cooling–off period to pass, and once we got the certificate, we would officially be divorced.
A few days later, I saw Angela post a photo

of her hand intertwined with Erik’s on social media.
A sparkling wedding ring on her finger.
“Sister–in–law, oh, sorry… I mean, you and Sid are already divorced.
Now, I’m his other half.”
“Sidney, do you think our wedding ring looks nice?”
“Sid said once you two got the divorce certificate, he would marry me immediately.”
I looked at the message from Angela and smiled faintly.
I quickly sent her a congratulatory reply.
If she thought this message was meant to

show off to me, she was utterly mistaken.
This silly girl, I only took it as her sharing the good news with me.
I thought that after one month, when Erik and I got the divorce certificate, my ties with the Conner family would be severed.
But, to my surprise, before the month was over, the Conner family began calling me non–stop.
I didn’t answer, but Penelope and Erik’s mother kept sending me messages.
“Sis, please save my dad! Angela lied to my brother and got you to divorce Sid, saying her parents could help get Myles‘ appointment. But now that my brother is divorced, they can’t even contact Myles!”

“My dad’s condition has gotten worse. Sometimes he doesn’t even recognize us.”
“Sis, my brother has been drinking every day. When he’s drunk, he calls your name. Please, where have you gone?”
I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly.
At first, when I applied for this job, Erik looked down on me.
He didn’t think I could get a good job.
Nor did he think I could last long.
So he never even asked about what kind of work I was doing, how much I was earning..
Now that I had left, he didn’t even know where to inquire.

A sudden wave of sympathy surged through
- me.
“Sid, I know Erik was wrong about you. But your dad treated you well.”
“For the sake of your father, please help us once more. Mom is begging you…
I looked at Mrs. Conner’s message and remembered when I first married Erik, and we went back to the countryside for New Year’s.
When Erik wasn’t around, his mother humiliated me publicly.
She made it impossible for me to save face.
I was forced to hold back my tears that day.
That night, unable to sleep, I went to the

living room to get myself some water.
But I accidentally overheard Mr. Conner yelling at Mrs. Conner.
“Sidney has no family. Since she came to our family, she’s like our daughter. You should stop treating her with disrespect.”
“If her mother were alive, would she allow her daughter to be treated like this in someone else’s home?”
“Put yourself in her shoes–if in the future Penelope’s in–laws treat her badly, how would you feel?”
After that, although Mrs. Conner still wasn’t warm toward me, at least she stopped
bullying me.
Without hesitation, I grabbed my phone and

found Myles‘ number.
I called him, but he said he had gone abroad with no set return date.
Then, he recommended a doctor for me.
And said that if necessary, he could ask his assistant to help me book the appointment.
I thought for a moment and forwarded Myles‘ information and suggestions to Penelope.
If the Conner family needed it, I could ask Myles to help with the appointment.
But to my surprise, Penelope never replied to me again.
The work in West City went smoothly and kept me busy, and I had no intention of

deliberately investigating the situation with the Conner family.
Until that night, when the world was quiet.
I logged onto social media, only to find countless private messages in my inbox.
“Sid, I was wrong. You were right. I’ve always been so insecure. I’ve always wondered why someone so beautiful, so amazing would love me.”
“I always thought you were with me out of gratitude.”
“I’m so stupid. I actually believed Angela’s slanders. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have doubted whether the child I was carrying was even mine.”
“Sid, I really envy Myles. He once had your

true love…”
“Sid, I was the one who ruined our
happiness. I suspected you were carrying someone else’s child.”
“Sid, my dad’s condition has worsened, and it might be only a few days left. Please come back to see him?”
“Sid, I didn’t really want to divorce you. Angela forced me. She said she could cure my dad’s illness…”
Looking at these tear–jerking messages, I could only feel mockery.
What was this?
Now that Angela couldn’t help you, you remembered me?

Without even thinking, I closed the inbox.
