Chapter 10
One late night, my phone suddenly rang.
In the quiet air, it felt like a thunderclap that cut through the silence, making my heart. race for no reason.
It was Myles.
I answered.
“Mr. Conner has passed away.”
My mind buzzed.
Myles told me that Mr. Conner had just passed away.
The Conner family had all rushed to his office, causing a scene-

They were outside his office, holding banners, shouting through megaphones, accusing him of lacking medical ethics.
They claimed that it was because Myles deliberately didn’t return in time that Mr. Conner had passed away so suddenly.
I hung up the phone and booked the fastest flight back to the capital.
Myles was also on his way back.
The Conner family’s protest had become widely known, and it had greatly affected the hospital’s reputation.
The hospital had set up an investigation team, just waiting for Myles to return.
By the time we arrived at the Conner

residence, it was nearly dawn.
Countless people were gathered at the mourning hall.
Through the crowd, I saw Penelope tugging at Angela’s collar, cursing her out.
“Angela, didn’t you say the living god could cure my father?”
“You lied so much just to marry my brother! You didn’t care about my dad’s life!”
“You are despicable!”
Angela retorted, “What does it have to do with me? The living god is real! I didn’t make it up!”
“You saw it yourself that day, there were so many people in line!”

“Others got cured, but your father took the medicine and then died!”
“Besides, your dad’s illness–no one could have saved him, not even Myles!”
When I got off the plane, I received a call from Myles.
He told me that although Mr. Conner’s condition had worsened, if he had been treated at the hospital, he would have survived for another six months.
His sudden death seemed suspicious.
So, he had his assistant inquire about the situation.
It turned out that a few days earlier, the Conner family had arranged for Mr. Conner

to be discharged from the hospital.
They had been taking him out early in the morning and late at night just to get in line to see a famous “living god” in folk medicine.
There were so many people who sought him out, and to get Mr. Conner seen sooner, Penelope even bought a scalper ticket at a high price.
But after Mr. Conner saw the “god” and took the medicine in the morning, by the afternoon, he was dead.
In a panic, the family immediately called an ambulance.
But before the ambulance could reach the hospital, Mr. Conner had already passed
away.

The Conner family was caught off guard by the sudden news, and in their anger, they decided to shift the blame onto Myles–since the man had died in an ambulance, they hoped they could make some compensation.
After hearing this absurd backstory, I could only feel sorry for Mr. Conner.
No wonder Penelope hadn’t replied to my
messages.
She must have thought she found a savior.
It was hilarious!
“To think that you’re blaming me, Angela, for the divorce between my brother and me? Would we have gone to see some living god if it weren’t for you?”
“Angela, you killed my father!”

“I’ll kill you!”
Penelope, like a shrew, lunged at Angela.
She grabbed Angela’s hair and slapped her repeatedly, making Angela’s lips bleed.
Meanwhile, Erik, drunk and disoriented, was sprawled on the ground.
It seemed like everything around him had nothing to do with him.
