Chapter 14
Penelope told me that the day Erik and I finalized the divorce, he was drinking himself into a stupor alone at a bar.
Later, he couldn’t pay for his tab and was beaten up and thrown out.
Drunk, Erik wandered the streets that night, and when crossing an intersection, he was struck by a large truck.
He lost his leg as a result.
With his leg crippled, Angela didn’t want to marry him anymore.
She took the wedding gifts and disappeared

As for Mrs. Conner–her husband had passed away, her son had lost a leg, and now all her money had been scammed away.
Mrs. Conner suffered a stroke and became
bedridden.
Penelope sighed on the other end of the line.
She said that after waking up, Erik had disappeared, and she had been searching for him for so long without finding him.
Little did she know, he had come to West City.
I listened and felt a mix of emotions I couldn’t
quite name.

All I could feel was a faint sadness.
Some years later, as I was preparing for my wedding to a younger man I had been dating for two years,
someone knocked on my door the night before the wedding.
I opened the door but only saw a bunch
of baby’s breath on the ground, with a card placed on top.
I picked it up and read it.
It was the same card Erik had given me all those
years ago.

I stared at the card for a while.
My younger man impatiently came out to check
on me.
“Who’s disturbing us at this hour? Don’t they
know how precious this moment is?”
I was speechless. “Tomorrow’s our wedding;
according to tradition, we can’t meet tonight, okay?”
He didn’t care about that.
He picked me up in one swoop and carried me straight to the bedroom.
“I’m the new–generation puppy; I don’t care

about tradition!”
He pounced on me, just like Toby.
I begged him to stop as he had me pinned down.
He smirked and began to undress.
“Begging already? It’s too early for that!”
I was lost in his passion.
As for the card–who cares?
