Chapter 8
I remember that day vividly. I stood there, trembling, holding the test results in my hand.
“Congratulations, you’re pregnant,” the doctor had said, her voice detached and routine, yet it felt like a pebble tossed into my heart, sending ripples of joy and disbelief throughout me.
I covered my mouth, struggling to contain my excitement. I was over the moon, and the first thing I wanted to do was tell Steve.
I couldn’t wait to see the look of joy on his face.
But when I sent him the news, the response that came was like a bucket of ice water,

dousing all my excitement in an instant.
“Get rid of it.”
“I don’t like kids. And now that Eve is back, I don’t want you or the baby standing in our way.”
I had rushed back that day, intending to talk to him in person. I was willing to divorce him, but I wasn’t willing to give up on our baby.
But on the drive home, I received a call from an unknown number.
Hesitant, I answered.
“Ah… Steve… be gentle… hmm…” Evelyn’s breathy, moaning voice came through the speaker, calling out Steve’s name.
In that moment, it felt like an invisible hand

had wrapped around my heart, squeezing it until I couldn’t breathe.
I couldn’t believe it. With shaking hands, I dialed Steve’s number, desperate to hear the truth.
Just as I did, a large truck appeared out of nowhere, right in front of my car. I swerved but couldn’t avoid it in time. The car spun out of control and crashed hard into the guardrail.
The impact threw me from the car, slamming me to the ground. The pain was excruciating -like every bone in my body had shattered.
Through my broken voice, I called Steve, begging for help.
But he ignored me.

And that’s how I, and our baby, died.
I lost consciousness soon after.
Even through death, the pain lingered, a sharp reminder of the betrayal. My soul was engulfed in torment as cold sweat drenched
- me.
I knew, with every fiber of my being, that I now hated Steve.
At that moment, Steve, who was doing prenatal exercises with Evelyn, seemed to sense something. His hand reflexively went to his chest, where a strange unease had settled in.
Just then, his phone rang, breaking the moment. He answered, and a cold, detached voice spoke from the other end. “Is this Mr. Steve? Your wife was in a serious car

accident two weeks ago. Her body is still at the city hospital. Please come identify the remains”
I had imagined Steve’s reaction to my death countless times.
I thought he’d be happy, relieved that the biggest obstacle between him and Evelyn was gone.
I had also imagined he’d be sad, at least a little–after all, we had been married for years, and once, we had loved each other deeply.
But I never expected him to remain expressionless.
The officer’s voice came again, “Mr. Steve, your wife was in a serious accident two weeks ago. Her body is still at the city

hospital, Please come identify her remains”
Steve stood frozen for several seconds before his face hardened, “Stop talking nonsenser”
The officer’s tone was somber and unwavering. “Two weeks ago, the hospital staff tried calling you, but you hung up on them. They made several more attempts, but you refused to engage. Now, they’ve asked for police assistance”
With every word, Steve’s face grew paler His hand, clutching the phone, turned white at the knuckles, Even his lips began to tremble
Suddenly, he shoved Evelyn away, standing unsteadily as he bolted from the house, not even bothering to put on shoes, barefoot as he ran out the door

I watched his frantic retreat, my emotions a tangled mess.
It wasn’t until he stood at the hospital morgue’s entrance that he seemed to regain a shred of composure. He took a deep breath and introduced himself to the staff, explaining his presence.
The staff member gave him a hard, indifferent look before stepping aside, allowing him entry.
Inside, Steve finally saw my body.
My face was covered by a white sheet, only a pair of lifeless, pale hands visible underneath.
Nearby, I overheard the hushed conversations of the staff.

“The truck ran her over. There wasn’t a single part of her body left intact. By the time she got here, she was already gone.”
“They say she was pregnant, too.”
“The truck went right over her abdomen… it’s such a tragedy”
“I heard a nurse called her husband that day. He hung up on her without a word, and there was another woman’s voice in the background.”
As their words sank in, Steve crumbled, clutching his chest as he collapsed to the ground in agony.
