Frank’s fingers flexed restlessly as he stared at the pulsating screen of his smartphone.
Beside him, a crystal ashtray–now filled with the charred remains of cigarettes- emitted a faint, acrid smoke.
His wolf paced agitatedly within.
Suddenly, the phone vibrated violently.
Frank snatched it up with lightning speed.
“Tell me you have something,” he snarled into the receiver.
Instead of the anticipated news, his beta’s voice came through, laced with deference and urgency.

“Alpha Finn, your mother commands your immediate presence. She says it’s of the utmost importance.”
Frank’s brows furrowed.
“Is she in danger?”
“She didn’t say, Alpha, but her…”
Frank ended the call and leaped to his feet.
The floorboards groaned under his weight as he stalked out of the room.
As he entered the grand hall,his mother stood at the far end.
With a flick of her hand, a cascade of enchanted photographs came hurtling towards him.

“The great Alpha Finn, reduced to a lovesick pup, chasing after a deceitful who plays you for a fool!”
Frank caught one of the photographs mid- air, his blood turning to ice as he stared at the image.
There was Stephnie,surrounded by a pack of lecherous alphas.
In another, she was locked in a passionate embrace with a rival pack’s alpha.
“That woman is a poison, a blight on our pack. She uses her wiles to manipulate and destroy, and you’ve been too blind to see it!”
Frank’s grip on the photograph tightened.

Before he could respond, the doors burst
open.
“Alpha, Stephnie has sent a message. She wishes to attend your birthday celebration tomorrow, bearing gifts.”

Tomorrow was his birthday, a day he had once looked forward to with excitement, a day he had planned to share with the woman he thought he loved.

“And invite Mathew as well. It’s time we had a little family reunion.” Just as the beta turned to leave, Frank called out,
“One more thing. I want you to track down Stella. I need to know everything about her–her whereabouts, her health, her… happiness.” His mother’s eyes narrowed, a look of suspicion crossing her face. “There are some questions I need to answer, some truths I need to uncover. Give me until tomorrow, Mother. I promise, I will bring this nightmare to an end.”
With a final, warning growl, his mother turned and stalked away, leaving Frank alone
