I’ve been with Alpha Jaxon for nine years. Over that time, we’ve severed our bond ten times. On the eleventh, I followed him into a jewelry store, where he was helping his lover, Selena Knight, pick out an engagement ring.
“She’s pregnant. Consider this a temporary mate bond, Jaxon said flatly.
He said it with no hint of regret, then added, “In eight months, we’ll reconnect the bond.”
“Before that, you’ll need to move out. I’ll have someone bring you meals every day.”
“Oh, and sign the agreement to sever the mate bond. Selena’s health is fragile, and she can’t manage taking care of the pup on her own.”
I took the agreement, nodding silently. As I turned to leave, I heard laughter behind me. His friends were talking.

“Jaxon’s something else,” one of them laughed.
“He’s got his ex–Luna acting as a maid.”
Jaxon chuckled, a smug smile spreading across his face. “It’s nothing. Nina’s cheap. Even without the bond, she’ll still take care of my pup like she’s in love with me.”
I didn’t respond. I lowered my head, pulled out my phone, and sent a message to the wolf I’d been talking to.
[I’ve severed the bond. When can we have the joining ceremony?]
He replied almost instantly.
[Tomorrow. I’ll take the earliest flight back.]
A while later, I received a notification from the bank-$30 million had been deposited into my account. Attached was a note:

[Our engagement gift. Please accept.]
I smiled quietly and slipped my phone back into my pocket.
Jaxon caught sight of my smile and furrowed his brows.
“Nina, what’s so funny?” he asked coldly. “Are you going crazy with sadness?”
In theory, I should be sad. I still remember the first time he suggested severing the bond because of Selena. That moment felt like my world was crumbling.
I cried for three days and nights, begging him not to leave. I even knelt in front of all our friends and family, pleading with him.
But he still left. As I watched him walk away, I cut my wrist in desperation. But he never came back.
This time, I felt nothing. I stared at him, my face expressionless.

“Congratulations,” I said flatly. “You’re going
to be a father.”
Jaxon nodded, his tone cold and dismissive.
“Don’t worry. Once the pup’s born, we’ll re–establish the bond,” he said.
“As long as you behave, I’ll tell the pup to call you ‘Mother‘ in front of others.”
After nine years of this, I’d heard those words too many times.
The first time Jaxon met Selena, she was a newcomer to the pack. He gave her a million–dollar gift, but she refused to be his lover. So, he immediately severed our bond and went after her.
After sleeping with her, Jaxon smugly showed me a picture of them in bed together.
“She’s different,” he said with a mocking grin.
She’s young and pure”

From that moment on, Jaxon became completely infatuated with her. Once, when they were in a cabin in the snow–covered mountains, he accidentally left marks on Selena. I had to risk the cold, shift into my wolf form, and run miles to deliver his birth O control pills.
Another time, Selena was in a bad mood and made me kneel before her to please her, to make her laugh. I did it. If Selena was ever upset, Jaxon would immediately sever our bond, just to make her smile.
Later, he would secretly re–mark me to maintain the connection in our family. After nine years of this cycle, I was numb, no longer feeling anything.
I didn’t say a word as I left the house, my face blank.
Then, I heard Selena’s sharp voice from behind.
“I don’t like any of these rings. Iwant the one

“I don’t like any of these rings. I want the one Nina was wearing!”
“Okay, okay, don’t be mad, baby, Jaxon said softly. “I’ll go get it for you.”
Without warning, he grabbed my hand and yanked the ring off my finger. The diamond cut into my skin, and blood dripped onto the ten–carat yellow sapphire. I curled up in pain, feeling the wolf inside me stir restlessly.
Selena frowned when she saw the blood.
“This is bad luck,” she said, carelessly tossing the ring aside.
Jaxon wasn’t angry. Instead, he continued to comfort Selena until she finally smiled. He even promised to give her the ruby ring that had once been passed down by the Blackwood family. That ring had once been the one Jaxon had said would always be mine, the symbol of our bond.
But now-
