Chapter 13
“Rejection Level: Abnormal.”
“Artificial interference detected… abnormal immune response.”
I stared at the medical report on the hospital’s archived system, each word
cutting through me like a blade.
Emily’s heart transplant didn’t fail by chance.
Someone made it fail.
Luna Chloe’s father’s signature–Jason Harrison–was stamped on the file.
“You manipulated her rejection… you killed her,” I whispered.

I copied the file to a hidden drive, tucked it inside my coat, and turned to leave.
A soft click..
“You shouldn’t be here.”
His voice was ice. I froze.
Alpha Ethan stood in the hallway, arms crossed, expression unreadable.
“You followed me?”
“You made it too easy.” He stepped closer. “Did you think the Foster Pack hospital would just let you wander in?”
I clutched the drive. “Move.”
“Hand it over,” he demanded, pinning me to
the wall.

“You don’t get to tell me what to—”
He leaned in suddenly, nose brushing my neck, breathing me in.
“…You smell like her.”
I froze.
“Exactly the same… as she did before she died.”
“You’re insane.”
“Maybe.” He ripped open my coat, yanking the drive from a hidden pocket. “You shouldn’t have come digging.”
I pushed him, tried to run
His hand struck the back of my neck.

Darkness fell.
I woke to cold air and the sting of leather restraints.
My wrists were bound to a splintered chair with thick straps. The attic smelled of dust and disinfectant.
It was the same room they once kept Emily in.
“Welcome back.”
Alpha Ethan emerged from the shadows, shirt unbuttoned at the throat, his gaze dark.
“What do you want?” I growled.
He said nothing–just knelt before me.
His fingers brushed the bite on my neck,

expression twisted.
“You know,” he said softly, “you smelled just like her… in heat.”
I flinched.
“You’re not mourning her,” I snapped. “You just want control. Another puppet.”
He smiled faintly, pulling out a slim injector- the kind used for targeted power stimulation.
“Don’t-“I jerked, but he pressed it to my power and clicked.
A surge of heat slammed through me, violent and electric.
My scent markers exploded, flooding the attic with vanilla and blood and fire.

Alpha Ethan stared, lips parted, like he was hallucinating.
“You think this is love?” I hissed. “This is you desecrating her memory.”
He didn’t answer. Just whispered, “If she were still alive… would she have forgiven. me?”
“You don’t deserve that answer.””
The door suddenly burst open.
Alpha Daniel strode in, two Betas behind him, gun raised. “Let her go.”
Alpha Ethan blinked, startled.
But I said, “No.”
Alpha Daniel faltered. “What?”

“I’m not leaving.”
He looked at me like I’d gone mad.
I raised my wrists. The skin beneath the leather was raw.
“I’m making a deal.”
Fifteen minutes later, the guards were gone. Alpha Daniel stormed off, livid.
It was just Alpha Ethan and me in the attic
now.
He stood by the window. “What do you want?”
“I stay with you. Three days.” I met his gaze. “In exchange, you let me move freely and stop interfering with my investigation.”

He narrowed his eyes. “Why would I agree?”
I reached down, pulled a hidden audio chip from my boot, and placed it in his palm.
“I recorded you. Saying I smell like Emily.”
His jaw tightened. Silence.
“Three days.”
I nodded. “Deal.”
That night, I sat curled in the attic corner, arms trembling.
The power was still overstimulated. My skin tingled. My throat burned.
But I didn’t cry.

Not for him. Not anymore.
I wasn’t Emily now.
But for her–I would bring it all crashing down.
