Chapter 16 Only The Strong Are Worthy
“Darn! This jinx!” Karina muttered under her breath in frustration. I knew nothing good ever happened if and when I ran into Avani in Phantom’s Hollow.
Zareth stood protectively before her, whispering, “We’ll see how things go. If we’re overpowered, I’ll break through the wolf pack’s siege, and you should escape first.”
Wolves were extremely cunning creatures and held grudges. If they weren’t killed, they certainly wouldn’t let things slide.
As such, Zareth was determined to risk everything to carve out a path of survival for Karina!
“Darn, it’s a pack of wolves. Based on the sounds, they must be Level–One wolves. The blood of the pup must have attracted them!” a beastman cried out in alarm.
Immediately, fear washed over Avani, and she paled. She tightly clung to Xelrik’s arm. “X–Xelrik, let’s hurry up and go!”
Xelrik wore a grim expression. They were already surrounded by a multitude of Level–One wolves, so escaping from such a situation was not going to be easy. I knew I shouldn’t have listened to Avani earlier!
The howls of the wolves grew closer, and the surrounding bushes rustled in response.
The beastmen anxiously looked around, a completely rattled with fear.

her.
A glint of darkness flashed in Avani’s eyes as she suddenly flung the wolf’s blood she held in her hands onto Karina.
The pack of wolves was after the pup, so she thought that as long as Karina could lure the pack. away, she would have a chance to escape!
“Rina, be careful!” Zareth sensed something unusual and swiftly pulled Karina away.
Wolf blood had splattered all over him. Some had also stained Karina’s leg.
In the next moments, a handful of grey wolves emerged from the dense shrubbery, their eyes glowing an eerie green. Drawn by the scent of blood, they locked their gaze onto the two.
A few wolf scouts raised their heads and howled, their cries piercing and full of sorrow.
‘Darn, they’re calling for backup!” Karina paled. I can’t believe that b*tch Avani set me up!
In the blink of an eye, more and more gray wolves emerged, immediately charging toward Zareth and Karina.

“Xelrik, run!” Avani quickly picked up the carcass of the young wolf and tossed it toward Zareth and Karina. She then transformed into a lynx and took advantage of the moment before they were completely surrounded by the wolf pack to make her escape.
Xelrik quickly caught on and took off running at full speed after transforming into a tiger.
The pack of wolves had come seeking revenge. In a moment of oversight by the wolves, they were allowed to escape.
By the river, the group of beastmen came to a halt, panting heavily.
“Nice. The pack of wolves didn’t catch up to us.”
“It doesn’t seem like Karina and Zareth followed us. Are they trapped by the wolf pack?”
In their panic, the beastmen could only think of fleeing, oblivious to the two who had fallen behind.
Karina was a beastwoman with Level–Six reproductive ability, so naturally, they didn’t want anything to happen to her.
A flicker of guilt passed through Avani’s eyes. Realizing that the beastmen didn’t notice what she did, she looked at them with teary, pitiful eyes, and said, “It was all my fault. If I hadn’t asked Xelrik to kill the pup, we wouldn’t have attracted the wolf pack. I owe everyone an apology…”
The exaggerated tone of her voice, coupled with her look of self–reproach and distress, instantly tugged at the heartstrings of the beastmen around her.
“This isn’t your fault. We hunted down the wolf pup. Even if we hadn’t killed it, the pack would not have spared us.”
“If it weren’t for you leading us to escape just now, we might have been devoured by the pack of wolves!”
“Exactly. It was Karina’s and Zareth’s misfortune that they didn’t manage to escape. They can’t blame anyone else for it…”
The beastmen spoke up one by one, offering their comfort.
Xelrik looked at Avani with a peculiar expression. Earlier, she was the one who clearly… Why did she change the story?
Avani didn’t notice anything unusual about Xelrik and was secretly rejoicing in her heart.
Earlier, she saw half of the wolf pack were Level–One wild beasts, and the alpha wolf was possibly even a Level–Two wild beast. Thus, she thought Karina must have been torn to shreds by the pack!
A faint grin settled on her countenance. Finally, I have my revenge for the humiliation she inflicted on me! So what if she has Level–Sir reproductive ability? She’s still going to die!

If any beasthuman were to witness that scene, they would be scared out of their wits.
Zareth grimaced as he moved Karina behind him, his gaze intensely fixed on the pack of wolves. It would appear he was searching for a potential escape route.
“Rina, you…” He was just about to caution Rina to seize an opportunity to leave when the time
came.
To his surprise, Karina pushed his hand away and walked ahead.
Her captivating eyes narrowed, not showing a hint of fear but instead excitement.
She wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to harvest more beast crystals delivered right to her doorstep!
“Why run? The beast crystals at home are almost depleted. Now that you’re here, none of you wolves should even think about leaving!” She drew the black blade from her waist, holding it point down.
She stuck out her tongue, licking the icy cold edge of the knife, readying herself in an attack
stance.
Zareth was taken aback, unable to believe she was planning to take on such a huge pack of Level- One wolves. “Rina, what about your baby?”
Based on what he knew, pregnant beastwomen were the weakest among their kin.
“Only the strong are worthy of being my offspring. If they can’t even handle this much of a fight, then they might as well be reborn elsewhere!” Karina scoffed, entirely unflustered.
Upon hearing that, Zareth relaxed his brows and smiled. “All right.” If Rina wants to fight, then I’m more than willing to accompany her!
In his eyes, her decisions were more important than anything else.
Right after that, Karina, clutching her black blade, dashed out.
In an instant, the pack of wolves launched their attack.
They snarled, their fangs bared menacingly as they lunged toward Karina.
Karina was naturally strong, and after absorbing the beast crystals, her strength increased event more. With a single punch, she could send a Level–One wolf flying, its fangs scattering in the air.
The black blade in her hand moved in and out, slicing off large chunks of flesh from the grey wolves.
However, ordinary weapons weren’t effective in dealing great damage to Level–One wild beasts.

attacking the grey wolf ambushing Karina from the side. He warned in beast language. “Infuse your weapon with your talent’s power. It will greatly enhance its lethal force!”
Upon hearing those words, Karina immediately did as he instructed.
The black blade shimmered, emitting two streaks of purple–red light, before she swiftly plunged it into the neck of the grey wolf.
The grey wolf convulsed as the blade pierced straight through its body.
When Karina pulled out the black blade, the wolf promptly stopped breathing and collapsed to the ground.
Karina grinned. The explosive agility of her cat beastman lineage allowed her to weave swiftly through the pack of wolves. In a matter of moments, one by one, the grey wolves fell.
Zareth didn’t miss a beat either.
Although he was unarmed, he skillfully entangled the grey wolf with his agile serpent tail, strangling it. The whole ordeal was over almost instantly.
The two of them seemed to be in a competition as the bodies of the grey wolves around them piled up.
Karina’s face and body were splattered with blood. By the end of the fight, even the nearby wolves hesitated on assaulting her.
From their perspective, she was practically a bloodthirsty she–devil!
Meanwhile, Zareth was spotless. Not a single drop of blood from the grey wolves had stained
him.
The scene presented a stark contrast between the two.
A wolf, completely covered in snow–white fur, suddenly appeared within their line of sight.
The white wolf’s gaze was fierce and ruthless. Upon seeing the bodies strewn all over the ground, it wished nothing more than to rip the two culprits into shreds,
“He’s the leader of the wolf pack!” Zareth instantly recognized what set the white wolf apart from the rest. Furrowing his brows, he shouted, “Something’s not right. Rina, step back!”
Karina had already charged forward. Just as the black blade was about to pierce the white wolf’s skull, it vanished.
Woosh!
