Chapter 27
“Are you fucking serious?” Carlos asked as he got inside. I briefed him about the update yesterday and for a minute, I think he must have thought 1 was joking
He scrutinized me with a curious look on her fare. “You talked her into this!”
“No. She probably thought about the benefits of working with me and agreed. I mean, we have people waiting for a chance to work here. Don’t we?
“Of course, be answered casually “But Eleanor wasn’t part of those people and I’m just wondering what changed her mund.
Honestly, I’ve wondered the same thing too but I can’t seem to come up with any reasonable conclusion on that
“So how is this going to be possible?” Carlos asked and I turned to him.
“What do you mean!”
“You can’t miss being in the jury selection. There’s a lot of work for you to do here. Avro
I know that, I countered. “And i didn’t say I was going to Virginia. Honestly, it crossed my mind but it isn’t the best thing to do so I opted for the convenient option of sending a representative,
so who’s going
“Anyone else. I told her Fill be sending a representative but I didn’t mention an
He gave a nod and when I could sense what was going through his mind, I shook my head. “And that person isn’t going to be you”
He raised his hands in the air again. “Scared she’d hark down if she sees me?
Quit being an asshole and let’s get to work.
Carlos is too smart for his own good and I hate it–low easy he can figure our things. There’s no way I’d let Carlos go to Eleanor. Shit can never be predictable and Corks may junt end up spilling everything about my life with nothing about the case
“I see that look,” he teased, “Someone’s tryi
trying so he can
ocations Why You don’t want to mess things with your ex–wife?
You’re being crazy,” I scoffed, not wanting to discuss anything about Eleanor Ireniemer telling him how infuriating it was that Eleanor acted like I didn’t exist and although it was a slip in my vulnerable moment, I still wish I could have kept that to myself
This is strictly based on work, Carlo Stop muking jokes cause I’m not going to be seeing her. The representative will have to handle
“Uh—she didn’t ask for a change, di
“No, she seemed pretty cool with laving no glimpse of me,
I realized that sounded very uh–damn it 1 cocked an eyebrow at Carlos when I saw the look he was giving me. “What?”
“Nothing man. Eleanor just doesn’t seem to give a fuck about you and I’m happy for her
I should probably be throwing a punch to his face for getting on my nerves but there’s barely a
ly anything Carlos can do that would make me pissed.
“Anyway, you have a meeting with Morgan Champ. Maybe you can get something out of him this time”.
I’m glad Carlos‘ concentration returned to work “You have about pro hours to get over whatever emotion you’re feeling and head to the precinct.”
I turned to my screen but my brain still wasnt functioning as well as it should. Instead of walking out the door, Carlos took a seat on the arm of one of the leather couches “You know you can always talk to me about this”
I frowned hecmise there was absolutely nothing I’d like in discuss with him. “I’m sure you have the facts of the case on your table
*You bet!
“so ger on it and make that opening speech a blast- I do not want to spend hours going over it You know? Something precise and smart.”

He frowned and I smiled right back at him. That is what he’d be getting for snooping around. “Don’t forget to send in my coffee. I think 1 need a cup to get out of this headspace.”
“Or maybe you just need to spill what’s going on with you.”
There is nothing going on with me, I shunned. “And I won’t be repeating myself again.”
Getting the signals, he stood to his feet and raised his hands in surrender mode. “Aye, Captain
“I just need some time to think,” I muttered to his hearing, “I do not want to engage in any conversation”
He took a few strides to the door and when he pushed it open, he looked over at me. “I’m sorry but it doesn’t seem like you’ll be getting that”
Before I could figure out what he meant. Ashely pushed her way in and adjusted her skirt. Her body con top plunged to her body and even made her bustier than usual but good lord–I need a moment.
“Avro” she called, “Goess what?”
It wasn’t until she said that and turned that I noticed she was holding a bottle of wine.
“What is going on?” I asked her, squinting my eyes in an attempt to understand why she’d be walking into my office with wine.
“We won the case!” she said cheering,
“Wait what?” Lasked. “it’s only been werksTM
“Well, you seem to forget that divorce cases can be resolved quickly without dispute. I’m also involved and I’m beginning to think that you no longer expert so much from me”
1 scoffed. “It’s nothing like that–F’m just shocked and uh well congratulations on this one
She inserted the corkscrew and twisted it gently until it came off. Just like an expert, she winked at me. “We deserve in celebrate. Avro
“Of course” Lanswered, lacking the required excitement. She turned some into the glass and handed it to me before repeating the same for herself.
“Here’s to more whats and no losses with me by your side
I clinked the glass with hers and just gulped the wine because I had other things to do
to have her company
“I can’t believe how easy this case was she said after a small sip. “I just reminds me of how much I can do on the high–profile case with you.”
I lowered the glass of wine to the desk and looked at her. “Tmi making on plans for that“:
“But I already made plans for this,” she whispered biting her lower lip;
