Chapter 3
When it was time for bed, I pulled out another blanket from the closet. Eric walked in and froze when he saw two blankets on the bed.
“What are you doing?” His face showed a flicker of irritation, and he impatiently added, “I already told you, Maggie and I are just old friends.”
“I think I caught a cold. I don’t want to give it to you,” I said, wrapping myself up in the blanket.
“Do you need some medicine?” Eric walked
over.
I shook my head. “It’s just a little headache. A good night’s sleep should fix it.”

I turned off the bedside lamp on my side of the bed.
After a while, I felt the spot next to me sink in. Eric’s breath soon followed, and his arm draped over my waist.
This was his favorite position.
I pulled the blanket over my head, thinking about the things I needed to do tomorrow.
I had prepared breakfast and was about to wake Jason up, but to my surprise, he was already mostly ready.
Eric was in front of the mirror, fixing his hair, humming a tune.
He even sprayed a bit of the perfume he had given me two years ago.

Noticing my gaze, Eric put the bottle down. “Don’t let it expire and go to waste.” he said.
“Breakfast is ready!” I didn’t call him out on his words.
“Same old thing. I’m going out to eat,” Jason said, glancing at the table, then looking at Eric with a pout.
Eric shot me a quick glance. “Your mom’s not feeling well and still made you breakfast. Eat at home.”
“It’s fine, you guys go out. I’ll eat on my own,” I said, taking the initiative.
Jason was happy, and Eric hesitated as if he wanted to say something but couldn’t.
I had already turned and gone into the

kitchen.
“Doesn’t Jason love the dumplings you make? I’ll pack some for him, he can eat them if he gets hungry on the way, Eric said, rushing into the kitchen and packing a bag of dumplings.
I didn’t reply. I watched them leave and then went to the balcony.
Our apartment was on the fifth floor, so I could clearly see the bag Eric was carrying. As he passed the trash can, he casually tossed it in.
I stood on the balcony for a long time, and when my legs began to ache, the sun was already high in the sky.
I started cleaning the house. When I saw my shoes coming apart at the seams, it hit me

that I hadn’t bought new shoes in two years. I was still wearing Jason’s old ones.
When they came home in the evening, I had just finished making dinner. Eric entered the kitchen, which was rare.
“Wife, this is a gift for you,” he said.
I turned around to see Eric holding a gold necklace.
“Let me put it on for you” he said, fastening it around my neck. “My wife looks stunning.”
I lowered my gaze to the glittering necklace. This seemed to be the first gift he had given me since I gave birth to Jason.
“Wearing gold and silver doesn’t change the fact you’re just an old hag, Jason leaned on the doorway, his tone casual.

I dropped my eyes without refuting, but Eric scolded him instead. “Is that how you talk to your mom?”
Jason sneered. “Well, it’s true.”
I couldn’t understand why the child I had cared for so devotedly would turn around and stab me in the heart.
Eric tried to console me. “He’s just a kid. Don’t take it to heart–I’ll set him straight.”
Had he forgotten? Jason was my son too. But in his words, it always felt like I was the outsider.
