Chapter 6
But then, Eric was in a car accident while on a business trip. I exhausted myself so much taking care of him that I ended up miscarrying. Afterward, I had to rest at home for six months.
As Jason grew older, I brought up going back to work a few times, but Eric always refused.
Jason would cuddle with me and ask, “Mom, don’t you want me anymore?”
My heart would melt, and I couldn’t bear to think about working again.
I regret it now as much as I was once firm in my commitment to taking care of the family.
What would I do if I divorced him? After

being away from the workforce for so long, could I even find a job?
Though I feared the uncertainty, I never once considered not divorcing him.
“Honey, here.” As soon as I walked to the station exit, I saw Eric waving at me.
“These past few days must have been exhausting, right? Mom called me, saying she’s feeling much better. It’s all thanks to you,” Eric said, taking my luggage from my hands.
How had I never noticed before how good he was at twisting the truth?
Looking at the difference in skin tone on his hand and arm, I couldn’t help but think that he had probably been having a great time while I had been at home.

“Why are you here?” I already knew from the detective that they were returning today, so I deliberately chose to return at this specific time.
“I was worried you’d be too tired, and it’s your birthday today, don’t you remember?” Eric smiled softly, his eyes glistening.
I got into the passenger seat as usual, pretending not to notice Eric’s face, which seemed to be holding back words.
“Dad, look! That’s Teacher Maggie! Let’s give her a ride!” Jason excitedly pointed at the window and shouted.
I saw in the rear–view mirror that Eric and Jason exchanged a look. I turned my head to the window, deliberately ignoring Eric and Maggie’s polite greetings.

It wasn’t until Maggie opened the passenger door that our eyes met. She froze for a moment.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to,” Maggie said, leaving the door open and just staring at me. “I’m just used to sitting in the front.”
“Daisy, just let her have it.” Eric said, his voice soft but carrying a hint of command.
I looked at him, his gaze flickering nervously.
“Well, Maggie, you can just call a cab,” I leaned back against the seat, suddenly tired of enduring.
“Mom, Maggie’s a guest. Can’t you let her have the front seat?” Jason raised his voice
at me.

I stiffened, my expression cold. “Am I not allowed to make decisions in my own car?”
“Open the trunk, I’ll take a cab myself,” I said, ready to get out of the car, but Eric grabbed my arm.
“The back seat is more spacious. Maggie can sit in the back, Eric said, squeezing my wrist hard.
I bit my lip, swallowing the pain without a word.
Maggie shot Eric a reluctant look, her eyes filled with some unspoken emotion, before she went to sit in the back.
“Maggie, don’t mind my mom. She’s going through menopause, and her temper is bad. We’re going out to eat; why don’t you join us?” Jason invited Maggie without

considering my opinion.
I stared at him through the rearview mirror, the anger in my chest turning into a sinking regret.
For a child like this… it wasn’t worth it.
