Chapter 7
Eric chose a restaurant with a lighter menu.
Jason ordered the dishes, and not once did anyone ask for my opinion.
“Maggie, eat this. It’s their signature dish,” Jason said, eagerly offering food to Maggie.
He had never once done that for me, not once in all these years.
“Does it not suit your taste?” Eric glanced at me, his voice laced with an almost casual indifference.
I forced a bitter smile. He must’ve forgotten. I liked bold, spicy dishes. Maggie was the one who preferred lighter flavors.

Back when we were dating, Eric ate spicy hotpot with me, almost crying from the heat.
Later, I started eating lighter food for him and Jason.
On the way back, Maggie quickly took the front passenger seat.
“I feel a bit nauseous after eating too much. Can I sit in the front?” she said.
Before I could reply, Eric opened the door for her and helped her into the seat. “Be careful.”
He gently closed the door and looked at me. “Hurry up and get in.”
I watched his back as I got into the backseat.
Jason was staring down at his phone, not.

saying a word to me.
Up front, Eric and Maggie seemed to be enjoying their conversation, reminiscing interesting things about their college days.
“Ah, we should’ve turned left at that intersection. You missed it,” Maggie called out, pointing frantically.
Eric slowed down the car. “Really? I didn’t see it clearly.”
“Bang!” A huge crash sound erupted in my ears, and the world began to spin.
When I regained my senses, our car had crashed into the trees.
“Jason!” I instinctively reached over to
Jason, hearing a faint groan. “Are you hurt? Can you move?”

“My stomach hurts, Jason groaned softly.
“Can the door on your side open? You need to get out.” I smelled the oil and feared the car might catch fire.
The door wouldn’t open, but the window was still functional. I helped Jason through the window, whispering, “Don’t be scared, take it slow, you’ll be fine.”
As I reassured him, I called out to Eric ahead.
Thankfully, Eric wasn’t unconscious and managed to get out.
It was just me and Maggie left on the right side.
My right foot was trapped under the front seat, unable to move.

“Daisy” Eric came over, looking helplessly at
- us.
I was about to speak when Maggie started moaning.
“Eric, help me, it hurts so much,” she whimpered.
Eric rushed over, his voice filled with worry. “Where does it hurt? Don’t be scared, I’ll get you out.”
He reached out and opened the door, pulled Maggie out, and glanced at me in the back. “Maggie’s hurt, I’ll get her out first. Daisy, just wait.”
I watched helplessly as Eric ran with Maggie toward the road, Jason anxiously following behind them. Not once did they turn back to

look at me.
I sat quietly against the seat, tears silently falling.
I had once believed that they–father and son–were the closest people to me in this world. But it turned out, they weren’t.
Eric didn’t come back to rescue me. It was the firefighters who cut open the front seat and got me out.
I watched as Eric and Jason followed Maggie onto the ambulance, and my heart shattered.
The next day, Eric finally showed up at my hospital room.
“Sign it.” I handed him the divorce papers that the lawyer had delivered overnight.
