Chapter 13
“You’ve come at the right time. Take my son back to the old home for a few days; I can hardly keep up with him,” my sister–in–law casually asked me to take my nephew back for the summer.
“You’re the one who’s always busy making money and never has time for me,” my little nephew shot back, clearly displeased.
I ruffled his hair gently, “You can’t talk to your mom like that. She’s working hard to make sure the whole family can live a better life.”
Immediately, my nephew apologized to my sister–in–law.
My sister–in–law sighed, “You really know how to teach children.”

I smiled and shook my head–if only I had been as good with my own child.
Unexpectedly, just as the saying goes, “speak of the devil and he appears,” I ran into Jason as soon as I stepped out the door holding my nephew’s hand.
He looked at me with a face full of grievances. It had been a year since we last saw each other; he had gained weight and his face was covered in acne.
“Auntie, he always runs here. Mom gets so angry every time,” my nephew whispered in my ear.
“Let’s go.” I ignored Jason, but he rushed over and grabbed my hand.
“Mom, Maggie has ruined my life.”

I yanked my hand back and stared at him, expressionless.
Before I could ask, he started telling me everything that had happened over the past few weeks.
After Maggie was caught being the mistress, she was fired, but before that, she had already moved into Eric’s house. After she lost her job, she stayed home, didn’t cook, or do housework. At first, Eric tried to pamper her, but soon they started fighting, breaking things. He couldn’t sleep well.
He had signed up for that competition, and that morning, Maggie, surprisingly, made breakfast. But as soon as the exam started, he started feeling stomach pain. Unable to finish the exam due to the severe pain, he became unstable on his feet and was rushed

to the hospital. The doctor diagnosed it as acute gastroenteritis and asked what he ate for breakfast. He said it was the dumplings at home.
Eric had the same issue and ended up in the hospital too. When Maggie came, they asked her what she had made for breakfast. Maggie said it was the dumplings from the fridge.
A flash of realization hit me–I had made those dumplings a year ago.
Jason confirmed my suspicion.
I didn’t know what to say.
“Mom, come back. I miss you” Jason said, as if it were a given.
I shook my head. “Your dad and I are

divorced now.”
“You’re my mom, but you still don’t care about me!” Jason yelled in frustration.
I looked at him in disbelief. “I gave you the house. I didn’t take a single penny to make sure you had it. What more do you want from me?”
“But you’re my mom. You can’t just abandon me!”
I smiled, shaking my head. “A year ago, you didn’t think like that. You called me a ‘old hag‘ who only brought you shame.”
Jason fell silent.
“Daisy” Eric, looking weary and drained, appeared at that moment.

Had they planned this together?
“Are you here to see Jason?” Eric looked at me with a pleasing expression.
“I’m here to take my nephew home,” I said, ruffling my nephew’s hair.
The little guy quickly chimed in, “Auntie, I’m. hungry. Let’s go home.”
“Daisy” Eric stepped in front of me, blocking my way. “I’ve kicked Maggie out. It was my mistake. I was possessed by a devilish whim and forgot how she dumped me for a wealthy man before. I was deceived by her act of playing the victim. It’s all my fault.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
Eric took a deep breath, looking at me earnestly. “Let’s remarry. Jason needs his

mother. You can’t just abandon him.”
“Eric, you’re as selfish as ever.” I stared at him, each word deliberate. “You don’t actually feel sorry for what you did. You only realized your interests were hurt and found that I’m the best choice. You just want me to keep playing the role of your free housekeeper. How foolish must I be to go. back and subject myself to abuse?”
I ignored Eric’s pale face as I led my nephew to the car.
Both Eric and Jason stood there, frozen in shock.
“Is this… your car?” Eric asked, his mouth. hanging open.
He was probably wondering how a housewife, someone who had left with

nothing, could afford a Mercedes. But what did it matter to him?
“Mom,” Jason clung to the car window, looking at me with a pitiful expression.
“I know I was wrong. I hurt your heart. Only after you left did I realize how good you were to me. I miss the meals you cooked. Please forgive me.”
Despite his heartfelt crying, I still saw the greed lurking in the depths of his eyes.
Suddenly, I realized something: it wasn’t my parenting that went wrong, but that Jason inherited his father’s innate selfishness and greed.
“You don’t like the path I’ve paved for you. Then you’ll have to walk on your own from now on.” I rolled up the car window. Seeing

that I was seriously not going to stop, Jason quickly withdrew his hand.
I shook my head and the car sped away.
The past was left behind.
