Chapter 8
It had been a month since Ethan had been released from the police station.
“Chloe, I’m home,” his voice cracked with an emotion he couldn’t quite hide. He had rushed back, eager to reclaim what he thought was still his. But as soon as he stepped through the door, his eyes landed on unfamiliar faces moving his belongings around the house.
“Who the hell are you? What are you doing in my house? Who gave you permission to enter?” His voice was ice–cold, his demeanor hardening instantly.
The strangers, unbothered by his presence, exchanged disinterested glances.

“And you,” one of them sneered, eyeing him up and down with disdain, “look like a beggar. This is my place now. I just bought it.”
Ethan’s mind went blank as he processed the words. “What? This… is my house.”
“Who sold it to you?” Ethan demanded, barely able to hold back his disbelief.
The man waved a feather duster at him, clearly uninterested. “It was Chloe. You know, the pregnant woman from that viral video a while back. You remember her, right? She’s the one who sold it to me.” He smirked. “Now get out. You don’t belong here. Don’t dirty my floors, it’s bad luck.”
Ethan’s legs seemed to give out beneath him, and he stumbled as the man pushed him out the door. Collapsing onto the

ground outside, Ethan felt like his world was shattering.
After a long pause, he shakily pulled out his phone and dialed my number. The call went straight to voicemail. Panic clawed at him as he quickly tried to contact me on WhatsApp, sending a voice message.
“Chloe, are you messing with me? Come back. I’ll be waiting for you at home.”
But the red exclamation mark that flashed on the screen was his answer. He had been blocked.
Staring at the screen in stunned silence, Ethan quickly called his assistant, hoping for some explanation. When the call connected, his voice was sharp, full of fury. “What are you doing? Didn’t you know my house was sold? You’re useless!”

The assistant’s response was devoid of the usual respect. “Ethan, you might be confused,” he said, his tone colder than ever. “You’re not my boss anymore.”
Ethan froze, stunned. “You resigned? Why didn’t you tell me?”
The assistant laughed, but it was bitter and mocking. “Do you really think you’re still in charge of anything? You’re not the president of Miles anymore.”
Ethan’s heart skipped a beat, and he felt a cold chill seep into his bones. “What do you mean?”
“Miles is gone. The company has been dissolved. Bankrupt. You need to wake up and stop acting like you’re still in control.” The assistant’s voice was filled with

sarcasm, making the words all the more painful.
Ethan’s mind reeled as he held the phone to his ear. “This can’t be right. I was only gone for a month. How could everything fall apart so fast?”
The assistant let out a cruel chuckle. “If you don’t believe me, go check for yourself. Chloe sold the company while you were locked up. It’s no longer under your name. She used your transfer agreement to sell it for pennies. You’re just a drowned dog that everyone will step on.”
The call ended abruptly, and Ethan stood frozen, his heart racing in his chest. The words from the assistant echoed in his head, mixing with my cold, haunting words from the detention room.

“Only when you’ve lost everything will your realize whether the person beside you is human or ghost.”
The reality of those words crashed over him as his knees buckled. With a loud, anguished scream, he collapsed onto the ground. Just then, a courier appeared in front of him, holding a package.
“Mr. Miles, I have a document here for you. Please sign.”
Ethan, barely able to comprehend what was happening, reached out numbly for the paper, his life completely unraveling.
