Chapter 6
I spent the next several weeks recuperating at the clinic, tending to wounds that weren’t all physical. Nick stayed by my side, a
loyal friend. He helped cover my hospital expenses and made sure I lacked nothing while I recovered.
Ryder never came.
Days passed, and I remained at the clinic. Nick took it upon himself to care for me, unlike Ryder, who couldn’t even bother to visit. Ryder knew where I was–how could he not? Sage’s bedroom was just next door. But in his mind, I was the liar, the manipulator. We had been together for three years, and yet, after everything that had happened, he no longer trusted me. I was pregnant at an inconvenient time, and it was all just too

perfect for him to believe. That doubt, that skepticism, had driven a wedge between us.
But all that seemed irrelevant now. All I could think of was recovering, escaping this hellhole.
The day I was being discharged, I passed by Sage’s hospital room. I wasn’t planning to stop, but something caught my eye. The door was slightly ajar, and as I peered inside, my steps faltered.
There, in the middle of the room, sat Sage in Ryder’s lap. Her hands slid down his chest, and her lips grazed his ear. Ryder’s breath hitched as he struggled, his fists tight on her waist.
“Sage, don’t,” he snarled, his voice strained.
But she only pressed closer. “Why so stiff?

The puppy I’m holding is yours. What’s
there to be afraid of?” Her fingers traced his jawline. “I miss you, Ryder. You can’t hide forever.”
Then, in a whisper, one meant for only him, she said, “Or… are you falling in love with Amber? Are you going to leave me for her?”
Ryder didn’t respond with words, but his face betrayed him. He softened, his body relaxing as he drew her closer. His hands found her hips, and the gentle expression on his face was the kind I’d never seen from him. The kind that was always reserved for her.
“Everything I did… I did it for you. Just you” he murmured, as if I wasn’t even there.
Sage turned to face me, a slow, mocking smile curling on her lips. That’s when it hit me: she wanted me to see this. She’d

orchestrated the whole thing.
I staggered back, my vision dimming as I stumbled down the hallway. My body felt numb, but my heart–my heart shattered.
Somehow, I ended up at the stairwell, clutching the railing for support. My breath was ragged, and the weight of betrayal crushed me.
Then, I heard her.
“Did you hear all that, Amber?” Sage’s voice was sweet with malice as she approached, her steps slow and deliberate. “Ryder never loved you,” she continued, her tone venomous, sharp. “He never wanted you. I’m the only one he cares about. And the child I’m carrying!”
My stomach twisted, my fists clenching at

my sides.
“It’s just that… I was never pregnant.”
