Chapter 3
From the early days of her pregnancy, Jessica had been staying with the Smith family.
She was the daughter of Colin’s mother’s old friend, so no one ever questioned their relationship. As her belly grew, Jessica became more desperate to be acknowledged, eager to be recognized as Mrs. Smith.
She spared no effort in winning everyone over–everyone except Grandma, who remained indifferent to her charms.
To spite me, Jessica even moved into my neighborhood, renting an apartment directly above mine.

“Hannah, I’m almost due, and the baby needs his father close. You understand, right? I don’t want Colin running back and forth–it’s just too exhausting for him.”
Colin’s mother valued Jessica immensely, visiting her nearly every day with homemade soups. When she saw me, her face held a hint of awkwardness. “Hannah, Jessica is my friend’s daughter. I should look after her a little.”
“And besides, you’re not pregnant, so you wouldn’t be able to eat these things anyway.”
Her poorly crafted excuse was nothing more than a feeble attempt at dignity, but with Jessica now living right above me, did she really think I was that naive?
Colin, meanwhile, turned a blind eye to Jessica’s outrageous behavior. He spoke

to me in a low, placating tone, “Hannah, it’s just one month. Once she’s had the baby, my parents won’t bother us anymore.”
He spoke as if he were deeply in love, spending a fortune on various luxuries for me to win my favor, but in the evening, he ended up in Jessica’s arms.
Jessica took a photo with his phone and sent it to me. In the photo, Colin was lying half–dressed next to her, while she looked at me with a victorious and provocative stance.
“Do you know? Colin treats me so gently. He’s careful not to hurt me… he loves me the most.”
“Colin and I share true love; you’re the other woman here. He’d rather sleep with me than come to you. Don’t you get it?”

“Why won’t you just divorce him? Why do you insist on coming between our family?”
I stared at her cruel words and the secretly recorded video of her sneering at the screen like a madwoman.
I replied with a single text: “If Colin doesn’t sign, your child will always be illegitimate.”
Then I blocked her. Another second and I’d be sick with disgust. I’d already retched so much, there was nothing left. Forcing myself to endure the pain, I typed out this message and collapsed in the bathtub.
The pain in my body felt like it was casting strange illusions before my eyes. I saw Colin enter the bathroom and bend down to gently lift me up.
His familiar scent filled my senses. It felt
like a century had passed since he’d held me this way. Lately, he’d been spending every night at Jessica’s, vanishing without a trace whenever she summoned him with a single
message.
If he had come back to take a look at me, he would have found me unconscious due to vomiting every night, lying in the bathroom until daybreak.
“Hannah, I’m sorry. Just hang on a little longer. Once she’s had the baby, I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
I saw his vague figure in my blurred vision as The gently bent down to listen to me.
“You jerk.”
“If you don’t sign those divorce papers, I swear I’ll make you pay.”

I could feel that I was really dying, and the time I spent in a coma was getting longer and longer.
