Chapter 02
Hearing Gavin’s words, an overwhelming sense of humiliation surged within me, causing my fingers to tremble uncontrollably.
In the ten years I had spent with Gavin, no matter the situation, he had always stood by my side, without hesitation.
How could he have found another lover in just one month?
How could he and the child have forgotten everything about us?
Gavin turned, taking Noah and Aaliyah with him, walking away.
“Wait!” I forced myself to suppress my

emotions, stretching out my hand in an attempt to grab the corner of the man’s jacket, but he showed no intention of stopping.
The weight in my chest grew unbearable, and I could hardly breathe. My vision began to blur.
Just before I lost consciousness, I thought I heard Noah calling for me, and I felt Gavin’s strange gaze upon me.
In a haze, I felt a hand gently brush my face.
But when I woke up, I found myself alone in the hospital room, with only my mother–in–law Sara by my side.
I immediately told her about Gavin and Noah.
Sara smiled at me warmly. “Don’t worry, I’ve

already brought them back. I took them to the hospital as well. The doctor said they’ll be fine as long as we help them recall things from the past.”
Upon hearing that, the heavy weight in my heart finally lifted. “As long as their health is fine, that’s all that matters.”
“But you, she continued, her expression suddenly stern, “you’ve been worrying about others‘ health, but did you know the doctor said your own health is at risk? You’ve been sleep–deprived, emotionally strained, and with all the stress, you were about to collapse. Do you realize that?”
I gave an awkward smile.
“It’s just that this past month, I’ve been busy looking for them and managing the company. Now that they’re back, I’ll definitely
get some rest”
“By the way, Sara, where are they now?”
Her eyes flickered, and her footsteps instinctively took a step back. “They’re at home. After the checkup, I let them go back to rest.
Seeing her reaction, I felt a gnawing unease, and a dark thought crossed my mind. “Does that include Aaliyah?”
Sara gave a faint, awkward smile, her lips curling just slightly. “Gavin insisted on having her with him before he’d come back. He says she’s their savior, and I couldn’t say no.”
I lowered my gaze and fell silent.
The next morning, an unexpected visitor arrived at my hospital room.
“Rebecca, are you okay?” Aaliyah Perez entered holding a bouquet of white chrysanthemums, her face beaming with a
smile.
It all came back to me.
I had seen her not long ago in Gavin’s car.
At the time, I was waiting with the child for Gavin to go out with us. But Gavin said he had something urgent and wouldn’t be coming back.
It was the first time he’d missed our weekly family gathering.
I understood him, as sometimes company
matters really couldn’t be avoided.
While waiting at the traffic light, I had seen Aaliyah too, smiling as she held a bouquet of white flowers in her lap.
Only, they weren’t the white chrysanthemums in her hand now.
I thought she was just an assistant to one of Gavin’s business partners. But now, things seemed much more complicated.
I stared at the chrysanthemums in Aaliyah’s hands.
Such a childish move.
“It’s quite an effort for you to find such a broken bouquet of chrysanthemums for me.”
The flowers in her hands were clearly

damaged, deliberately so.
She must have gone to the trouble of tearing off the petals herself.
“You don’t like it, Rebecca?” Aaliyah asked, and to my surprise, she started crying.
I frowned, silently watching her, trying to figure out what kind of act she was putting
- on.
