Chapter 2
“No, it’s fine.”
The man pulled a cake from the delivery box and handed me an umbrella.
“Sorry, miss. This cake is for my wife’s birthday. There’s contact information inside. If there’s anything wrong, you can reach me.”
After helping me to the bus stop, the last bus had just left.
I sat on the platform, suddenly feeling a pang of sadness.
Today was my third wedding anniversary with Neil.
Yet Neil was at a banquet with his beloved.

Over the years, I’d never received a gift from Neil on any holiday.
He’d probably forgotten the date altogether.
The phone rang. It was Neil. His voice immediately cut to the point.
“I’m not coming home tonight.”
I stayed silent.
A faint, delicate voice came from the other end of the line.
“Neil, who are you calling?”
Neil hesitated, then muttered, “No one.”
His voice grew closer to the phone, his impatience obvious.

“Forget it. I’ll be back later.”
He hung up without another word.
I stared at the phone in my hand, still cold from the call.
“Miss, are you alone?”
A drunken man sat down next to me.
I turned slowly to look at him.
“The weather’s so cold, how about you come home with me and warm up?”
His fat hand landed on my leg. “You look so sad, it’s really heartbreaking.”
I coldly snapped, “Take your filthy hand off me!”

The man froze for a moment, then cursed loudly.
“Damn, aren’t you dressed like this to seduce me?”
“You want to play the victim, huh-
Before he could finish, my bag came crashing down.
The man’s furious voice boomed, but a woman’s voice cut in.
“Helen?!”
“Neil really is something else, the woman said, glancing at me while turning on her indicator.

The woman came from a rival company, which had had many years of disputes with
- us.
I knew she was enjoying the drama.

“By the way, I didn’t see you at the banquet.”
“Neil brought that woman, Carroll, though. Everyone’s saying they make such a perfect pair.”
..Haha, just kidding. Neil said she’s his cousin, right?”
I clutched my leg, the pain from the injury drowning out the cold.
I forced a smile. “Maybe.”

She was about to ask more, but I interrupted
her.
“I’ve arrived at my house.”
“Thank you, Mrs. White”
The injury on my leg was worse than I thought.
A nearly ten–centimeter scrape, stuck to the stockings.
Peeling it off was agonizing.
That was when Neil came back.
He had been drinking heavily, his eyes a little dazed, and he tugged at his tie as he headed toward the bathroom.
He threw his briefcase on the couch, and the

bathroom door slammed shut behind him.
He didn’t even look at me.
A small bottle fell out of his briefcase.
I froze for a moment and picked it up.
It was a scar cream from abroad.
“Go to bed,” Neil said, emerging from the bathroom, wiping his hair.
