Chapter 9
I opened my bag, rummaging through it, only to find they weren’t there.
I searched again, more thoroughly this time, but they were still missing.
Elon gently stopped my frantic search, his voice as calm and gentle as always. “I’ve already sent the hospital’s documents to him. If you have them, great. If not, it’s fine.”
“Would you like to have dinner with me tonight?” Elon asked, winking as he flexed his arm, still sore from Neil’s punch. “Call it making up for things?”
“I’ll have to pass. I’m moving things around today, not sure I’ll have time.”

Elon paused for a moment, then understood. “I still have a few vacant apartments…
Seeing my clear refusal, he sighed, “Alright. If you need anything, just let me know.”
I handled my resignation decisively.
I cleaned out my desk and organized my luggage.
Dragging my suitcase from the bedroom, I put on the hat that was lying on the couch.
Neil stood by the door, watching me.
Usually, he’d be the one working late, but today, with hours left before the end of the workday, here he was, at home.
“Move aside,” I said flatly.

Neil leaned against the door–frame, his cold expression never wavering. “I’ll help you.”
His long fingers grasped the suitcase handle, and he gave a little push.
But instead of moving the suitcase out, it rolled back a few feet into the living room.
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t tell me, Neil, that you suddenly can’t bear to let me go.”
Neil pressed his lips together, allowing my taunt, but said nothing. “We’re just arguing. It’s not like we’re really breaking up.”
“You said once we go to the civil affairs bureau for the divorce, I wouldn’t regret it. Did you forget?”
Neil remained silent for a long time. I grasped the suitcase again.

The person beside me sneered, and Neil braced himself against the door–frame.
“Divorce… argument was that just an excuse for it ?”
“The real reason is because of Elon, isn’t it?”
“I knew it. As soon as he moved here for work, you started getting ideas.”
“Are you planning to move in with him?”
“Should I congratulate you? Escape from the misery and find someone better?”
I stared at Neil’s contorted face.
All I felt, aside from the sharp pain in my chest, was how incredibly pathetic the person in front of me seemed.

“Neil, to this day, you still don’t see where the problem lies.”
I took a deep breath. “Think whatever you want.”
“By the way, your phone was ringing in the bedroom for ages, and no one answered. Carroll sent a message saying her stockings. were left in your car.”
“Your phone screen was on. I saw it by accident… She said she really liked them, and reminded you to bring them to her.”
I laughed sarcastically. “The shortcuts you’re so proud of… they’re truly revolting.”
I gripped the suitcase tightly, yanked the door open, and let the suitcase slam into Neil’s foot. I didn’t care as I pressed the

Let him block my path if he wants to.
The elevator slowly descended.
