Chapter 7
By the time I left the rogue den, I had barely managed to patch up the pieces of my life. Thanks to Kevin, my old friend and the closest thing to a miracle worker I’d ever met, I was now aboard a plane with the Doctors Without Borders team.
When I woke up, I felt disoriented, my ears buzzing with the hum of the engine and the low murmur of voices.
“Adele! She’s awake!” someone called out. Suddenly, a cluster of faces surrounded me, their expressions a mix of relief and concern.
Kevin leaned closer, his ever–serious face softening. “Adele, how are you feeling? Your legs–are you in pain?”

I blinked and looked down at my legs, wrapped tightly in bandages.
“You’re lucky, you know,” one of the nurses chimed in, grinning. “If it weren’t for our Kevin here, you might’ve ended up on crutches for life. He’s already removed the nails. Your legs are safe–for now.”
“Thanks,” I croaked, though my voice cracked under the weight of my emotions. I glanced at Kevin. His brow furrowed, the same way it always had when I did something reckless back in med school.
“Kevin,” I said weakly, my throat tight with shame, “I’m sorry. I-”
He waved me off, but the pain in his eyes was unmistakable. “Don’t. Just don’t. What matters is that you’re here now.”

I couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt. Back then, I’d been the star surgeon, the one everyone said was destined for greatness. I had an incredible career ahead of me, surrounded by people who shared my passion for saving lives.
And then I threw it all away–for a man.
A wolf, to be precise.
Alpha Dwayne had swept me off my feet, and I’d let him. I’d abandoned my dreams and my pack of colleagues for a mate who had promised me the world, only to chain me to his.
But even after everything, my friends hadn’t abandoned me. They had risked their lives to pull me out of the rogue den, Kevin included.
Tears welled in my eyes. “I swear, I’ll never

leave the team again. From now on, I’m staying by your side–every single one of you. We’ll go wherever we’re needed, together.”
Kevin smiled faintly and pulled out a handkerchief to wipe my tears. “Adele, having you back is all we ever wanted. You’re family–you always have been.”
He hesitated, his jaw tightening. “But there’s something else…”
The sudden shift in his tone made my heart sink.
“What is it?” I asked, my voice trembling.
Kevin looked at me, his eyes filled with sorrow. “Your pup… I’m so sorry, Adele. During the jump, the pressure caused complications. We couldn’t save them.”

I froze, my hand instinctively moving to my abdomen. The hollow ache in my chest deepened as I let out a shaky breath.
“Thank you for telling me,” I whispered.
The loss stung, but perhaps it was for the best. With the pup gone, I could finally cut ties with Alpha Dwayne. Completely.
From then on, I threw myself into the team’s work. We traveled through war–torn packs and ravaged territories, healing wolves who had no one else to turn to.
I’ll never forget the smiles of the pups who wove flower crowns for me, or the warm, homemade meals the elders prepared as tokens of gratitude.
Around the campfires, under the open sky,

we sang songs of hope and prayed for a brighter tomorrow.
For the first time in years, I felt truly alive.
But life has a way of throwing curveballs.
Because just when I thought I had left my old life behind, Alpha Dwayne showed up again.
