Book 2: From Housewife to Business Queen

Chapter 9
Three years ago, I gave up my gold–medal–worthy reporter career for the
sake of my family.
And they repaid me with sweet lies:
My husband, my son, and his beloved kindergarten teacher-
Together, they orchestrated this betrayal.
They thought that a woman bound by family would never bite.
Little did they know, the pen I held was the sharpest blade.

“Look at Fiona, she’s so amazing!” My son’s voice was bright. “She said that next time Dad comes to the kindergarten, she’ll take us to the amusement park!”
My hand froze in mid–air.
This Fiona, the kindergarten teacher, had been popping up in my son’s conversations lately. Young, beautiful, and great with kids.
“Honey, how about we go out this weekend too?” I asked carefully.
Anthony didn’t even look up. “I’ve got an important meeting in the afternoon. You take him out yourself”

The clatter of his dishes on the table was loud, as if he were communicating–You understand I can’t tolerate it when you’re overly dependent, don’t you?
“Reporter White! Long time no see!” Luna’s call shattered the silence. “It’s the ten–year reunion. You have to come! I have a big scoop to tell you.“.
Reporter White. That title made my heart skip a beat.
I stared at my reflection in the mirror. Just thirty–five, but I felt like I had aged a decade. For this family, I had given up my gold–medal–worthy reporter identity, only to be replaced with a face that my husband now despised.
In the café, my former colleagues were all dressed in suits, full of youthful energy.

“Hey, did you hear? She’s the station head now!”
“My media company just went public!”
“Marie, how about you?”
I smiled bitterly. “I’m a housewife, taking care of
* “usband and son.”
“Tsk tsk, the most promising Reporter White back in the day, now content to be your husband’s homemaker?” The mocking tones rang loud and clear.
Luna gripped my trembling hand and whispered, “There’s a big shake–up in the education industry. They need a reporter who’s not afraid to tell the truth.”
“Fiona, my little princess looks so beautiful

today.” A familiar male voice suddenly rang out behind me.
I turned abruptly, my heart pounding.
By the floor–to–ceiling windows, Anthony was holding a young woman, gently arranging her long hair. That woman was my son’s kindergarten teacher–Fiona.
So that so–called “important meeting” was this.
“Anthony, the last bag wasn’t good enough,” Fiona cooed. “It doesn’t suit your status as a financial mogul.”
“It’s alright, Anthony replied, his voice smooth. “Today, I’ll take you to see
something more expensive, and we’ll book our trip to the Maldives for next week.”

My ears began to ring. Last month, when I suggested taking our son abroad, he had yelled at me, saying the company’s funds were tight, and he had cursed me out mercilessly.
“Hey, isn’t that Marie’s husband?” A colleague’s sharp voice cut through the air. “Marie, what are you going to do about your husband being with this young girl?”
“I heard he recently invested in a high–end kindergarten. Guess it’s for his mistress!”
“No wonder. She’s young and beautiful, knows how to play the game. Unlike some people, who are nothing but a pretty face with a faded glow!”
The coffee cup toppled in my hand.
Scalding liquid splashed across the

paperwork, glaring like blood.
“Marie!” Luna rushed to hand me a napkin.
I raised my hand to stop her. “Let me see that document.”
My voice was as cold as ice.
“The dark side of the education industry.” Luna handed me a fresh file. “They need a reporter who isn’t afraid to ruffle feathers.”
I stared intently at the couple across the room, so close, so intimate.
It’s time to reclaim some debts.
“Luna, I’m taking this story.” I stood up, wiping the blood from my lips. I hadn’t even realized I had bitten my own mouth.
