Chapter 4
I stood in the bathroom, feeling cold all over, my heart aching so much that I couldn’t breathe.
Ewen Wood frequently mentioned Felecia Ford, and I thought it was just mutual admiration between colleagues.
It turns out they had been seeing each other behind my back for a long time.
I couldn’t even recall how I got home that day.

The next morning, Ewen Wood came home and nonchalantly transferred the household money to me.
I sent it back untouched.
Seeing the rejection notice, Ewen Wood looked up at me, his eyes full of mockery.
“Too proud to take the money? Manvi Nelson, let me remind you, you have no income. Figure out how to manage this month’s expenses yourself.”
Ewen Wood had promised that as long as he was around, I would never have to worry financially. I trusted him and never saved any money for myself.
He took advantage of this fact to control me.
Yet I still refused his handout.

Living without money while managing a household was tough; I even cut back on buying meat and vegetables.
Because of this, Demir Wood often complained.
Finally, after I refused to buy him a game. controller, Demir Wood snapped.
“Mom, you can’t make money, and you’re just picking fights with Dad, causing trouble for me. I really hate you.”
Watching Ewen Wood observing from the sidelines, my heart grew colder.
The man I loved for ten years, the child I
raised for eight, felt like strangers rather than family.

Though Ewen Wood later apologized, I realized that until I was fully independent, it wasn’t wise to confront him immediately.
But from that incident, I deeply understood that when a man loves you, he indeed wants to give you the world.
But love often changes.
It’s safer to rely on yourself.
I began privately reaching out to former
clients, taking jobs as an independent designer.
Through reputation and skills, I went from taking on small sporadic projects to gradually handling mid–sized ones.
Then came the moment when I quietly secured the major international project from

Hardy Group.
The very client that Ewen Wood and Felecia Ford couldn’t win over.
Completing this project would make me a rising star in the industry.
That’s why tonight, I finally had the courage to confront Ewen Wood.
Seeing me bring up old grievances, he became embarrassed and angry.
“Manvi Nelson, what can you accomplish circling pots and pans every day? That little freelance money isn’t enough for groceries.”
“You’d be better off taking care of our son.”
I chuckled coldly.

“Isn’t Demir Wood being locked after by
Auntie Felecia? He doesn’t even need me as
his mom.”
“Same for you; if you think marrying Felecia Ford is such a great fortune, go ahead and marry her!”
“Speaking of which, I’ve decided to divorce you.”‘
Ewen Wood’s face turned from dark to furious as he gripped my hand tightly, like a storm was brewing.
“Don’t try to scare me with divorce. I’m not afraid of that!”
“You should seriously reflect on how to treat the husband who supports you.”
The next day, Ewen Wood sent two words,

“business trip, and then disappeared for half a month.
Along with him vanished Demir Wood.
The teacher called, saying that Demir’s dad had taken him early to go on an educational journey.
I wasn’t surprised; Felecia Ford’s Instagram had already hinted at their trip for three.
This gave me time for final preparations.
The foreign executives at Hardy Group were very satisfied with the proposal and kept urging me to join the team.
“SU, your proposal is amazing. We’re very excited about your on–site implementation.”
I looked at the time and called Ewen Wood.

“Could you come back in the next few days so we can finalize our divorce?”
“Divorce? Manvi Nelson, how long are you going to keep this up? Sia just wanted to show Demir the world, not replace you. Stop your petty antics.”
I grew impatient and pushed him, “I’m in a hurry to go to Paris for the Hardy Group project. It’s best to finalize the divorce papers by Friday”
He yelled in disbelief over the phone, “Hold on, are you saying you landed the Hardy Group’s high–end mall design project in Paris?”
“I can’t believe it. We worked for three months and didn’t get it. And you did? Manvi Nelson, stop joking.”
8/10
I casually forwarded a news article to him.
The headline read, “Mysterious Rising Designer Collaborates with Hardy Group to Create a Temple–Level Cultural and Artistic Mall.”
“You don’t want to tell me you’re the emerging designer SU, do you?”
Before I could respond, Ewen Wood burst into laughter.
“Manvi Nelson, do you think I’m a child? Every commercial project that SU touches turns into a landmark. If you had such talent, why spend every day at home cooking for me and the kid?”
He was right; that meal wouldn’t be cooked any longer.

Felecia Ford grabbed the phone from him.
“Manvi, you shouldn’t joke around with such claims. Impersonating SU could not only embarrass Ewen but also risk you paying fines or even going to jail.”
On the side, Demir Wood chimed in, “Mom, pretending to be someone great is pointless. My idol is still Auntie Felecia.”
Their words buzzed in my head, and I had to raise my voice to cut them off.
“Believe it or not, feel free to sue me for infringement and see who the real fool is.””
“Ewen Wood, see you at the courthouse on Friday morning.”
