I couldn’t help but laugh–a bitter, disbelieving sound.
“Victor, you still refuse to take responsibility for your actions, don’t you? Everything wrong in your life is always someone else’s fault.”
He looked at me, confusion and regret flashing across his face.
“When we first met, you approached me under Ruby’s orders, knowing full well what she had done to my sister. You could have told me the truth then, but you didn’t. Even after we married, you stayed with Ruby, betraying me over and over. And after pushing me into the ocean, you ran straight to a hotel with her. You claim to love me, but every single action you’ve taken proves otherwise. How dare you ask for forgiveness now?”
Victor’s shoulders slumped as my words sank in.
His lips trembled as he muttered weakly, “I… I didn’t have a choice. I’m sorry… I’m so
sorry.”
I stepped past him, but he lunged forward, grabbing my leg and pleading.
“Please don’t leave me! My father died of a stroke while I was in prison, and my mother
disowned me out of shame. I’ve lost everything, Lillian. I have no one but you!”
I kicked him off with no hesitation.
“Everything you’ve lost, you brought upon yourself. From the moment you decided my life was expendable, we were finished. Whether you live or die is no concern of mine. Don’t ever come near me again.”
Victor collapsed onto the pavement, sobbing uncontrollably, but his grief failed to stir
even a flicker of compassion in me.
After that day, Victor disappeared from my life entirely.
A year later, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.

Elliot, however, encouraged me to keep working. Together, we balanced parenting and
professional life, creating a partnership built on trust and mutual support.
Our life was everything I’d ever hoped for.

The next time I heard Victor’s name, it was in a call from the police.

They informed me that, after his release from prison, Victor had fallen on hard times. Jobless and struggling with alcoholism, he’d been arrested multiple times for causing disturbances.
Eventually, he borrowed money from dangerous loan sharks. When he couldn’t repay them, the threats escalated.
Cornered and out of options, Victor jumped from a high–rise building.
The officer mentioned that Victor had written letters to me before his death, asking if I
wanted to claim them.
I didn’t hesitate to decline.
“I have no connection to Victor Bennett anymore. Do whatever you want with them.”
Hanging up the phone, I returned to my family.
Elliot emerged from the nursery, cradling our daughter in his arms.
“Who was that?” he asked.
“No one important,” I said, kissing him softly.
As I gazed at my family, I knew that only they mattered now. Together, we would write a new, beautiful chapter–one free of the shadows of the past.
