Rachel clung to him persistently.
“The first time I saw you, I was moved by your innocence. The next time we met, I was conquered by your passion.”
“No one in this world can compare to you. Happy now?”
“As for Emily, she’s just like my mom. What’s so interesting about that?”
“After we’re married and someone’s helping me manage the family business, I can take you traveling around the world. Don’t be angry, okay?”
Before he finished speaking, the two were already kissing.
I stood in the darkness, tears silently falling, feeling utterly ridiculous.
So whether in this life or the last, I was just a bargaining chip for him to gain freedom.
He deceived me clear–headedly, while I foolishly believed in this dream.

I told Mrs. Carter I wanted to go to Cloud City to clear my mind. She immediately enthusiastically helped me pack my luggage.
“Emily dear, it’s good to go out and travel more. When you come back, it’ll be time to prepare for the wedding!” she chattered as she packed.
On the day I left, I specially bought a box of rose–flavored macarons, thinking of giving the team a perfect farewell.
My colleagues chattered behind me as we walked towards the office, laughing and talking.
Who knew that the moment we pushed open the door, the scene before us would be like a knife stabbing into my heart.
All the documents on the desk were crumpled into balls, covered with glaring red lipstick marks. The air was filled with the scent of ambiguous perfume.
Even more deadly was Lucas’s unrestrained voice coming from the inner room.
“I’ve already asked Mom to move up the wedding date. Since Emily is so eager to marry into the Carter family, let her get what she wants!”
“But before we leave, we need to teach her a lesson.”
“I’ve already found someone. I guarantee it’ll scare her out of her wits!”
My blood instantly froze.
A terrible truth surfaced: The kidnapping in my past life that almost cost me my life was actually planned by him!
Memories flooded back like a tidal wave. Those kidnappers forced me to call him for help, threatening to break one of my bones for each day of delay.
On the other end of the phone, he pretended to be anxious, saying he would definitely come to save me, telling me to stay alive and wait for
him.
I was tortured in that dark, damp basement for three whole days. Several of my bones were broken, and my right eardrum was even
punctured.
In the end, I was dumped in an abandoned building in the outskirts, starving for seven days and nights before being discovered by a passing
cleaner.
Those days were like hell on earth, every second struggling on the edge of death.
When I crawled back from the gates of hell, what awaited me was news of Lucas’s death and countless people’s curses.

Everyone called me a jinx, said I was a husband–killer, said I should die alone.
Mrs. Carter even became a different person, pointing at my nose and calling me a scheming bitch, saying I had killed her precious son.
I endured my injuries to handle various affairs, and still had to
cry my heart out in front of the media to thank him for his “heroic rescue of me“.
After so many years, that disaster remained ironclad evidence for others to attack me for being “ruthless and murdering my husband“.
I always thought he had died to save me, never imagining this was all an elaborate scam he had designed!
Rachel’s coquettish laughter interrupted my memories:
“This way she can be like those tragic heroines in dramas, hugging a memorial tablet and living as a widow!”
Lucas sneered: “What memorial tablet? I won’t even leave her a seed. That blessing is reserved for you.”
Rachel panted: “Lucas, be gentle, I can’t take it anymore.”
My assistant saw my ashen face and coughed hard a few times. The noises inside suddenly stopped.
At my farewell party, Lucas walked out disheveled, with a disheveled Rachel in his arms.
The office was dead silent. The macaron box slipped from my assistant’s hand, shattering to pieces.
Some people lowered their heads awkwardly, some looked at me with sympathetic eyes, as if I were a pitiful creature.
Lucas saw me, his face instantly turning pale:
“Emily, let me explain!”
I ran out of the office without looking back, heading straight for the airport.
In Cloud City, I disappeared for a whole month.
Until the wedding date approached, he finally couldn’t sit still and called to ask about the wedding.
I said coldly: “Don’t worry, how could I forget such an important day? Just come pick me up at the airport.”
He obviously breathed a sigh of relief, even saying he had prepared a huge surprise for me.
I curled my lips. Yeah, I’ve also prepared a gift for you that you’ll never forget!
