Sophia seemed to be crying as she left.
With a faint sound of the door closing, the world returned to silence.
But I was still pinned against the door by Ethan.
The darkness lent his eyes an inexplicable murkiness.
I felt hot and shifted my neck slightly.
“Mr. Fu, it’s v–very late. You must be tired.”
I was so nervous I could barely speak smoothly.
“No rush. I still need to put medicine on you.”
His low, ascetic voice was especially alluring in the dark night.
Ethan carried me and opened the bedroom door.
The wind from outside blew against my sweat–soaked back.
I shuddered.
Ethan brought over the first aid kit and crouched in front of me.
In the dim light, the wedding ring on his ring finger glinted, making me feel a bit dazed.
Everything that had happened tonight felt like a dream.
I couldn’t help but recall the first time I met Ethan.
In my freshman year, I won first prize in a citywide essay contest.
The school held an awards ceremony.
The Fu family had sponsored many students, including me.
So that day, Ethan was sitting in the audience as a representative of the sponsors.
Nathan, as my boyfriend, was embarrassed by my stammer and left halfway through.
Ethan watched the whole thing without any change in expression.
The part where I gave my acceptance speech was unbearable to watch.
My stammer delayed the proceedings.
When Ethan left, a heavy snow had started falling and cars could barely move.
Theard he missed an important meeting because of it.
The school officials brought me to apologize to Ethan.

The school officials brought me to apologize to Ethan.
“Mr. Fu, I’m so sorry.”
My lips were blue from the cold, my voice trembling.
The black car window lowered a crack.
His gaze pierced through the blinding snow, meeting mine.
“It’s alright. Your work deserved first prize.”
“The weather is bad. What does that have to do with a student? Go on back.”
That was the only time in my student years that I received praise and care.
It filled me with gratitude towards the Fu family.
“What’s wrong?” Ethan’s voice suddenly pulled me back from my memories.
He was holding my calf, the moist ointment warming as it was rubbed in by his fingertips.
I smiled. “Mr. Fu, I’ll repay you properly.”
Ethan paused at my words.
“Olivia, starting from when I was 18, the money I spend on charity each year can reach several hundred million.”
“Do you think I need repayment?”
He looked up, his gaze like a hook capturing my soul.
“Or are you saying, your kindness to Nathan was to repay me?”
Caught out, I hurriedly changed the subject. “Then… what do you want?”
“What I want, you’ve already given.”
Ethan’s tone was calm and steady, yet determined. “The rest, I will have in the future.”
