Ivan looked into her eyes and nodded. After a while, he lowered his gaze.
Elizabeth poured him a glass of water and heard him mumble, “Why didn’t Alexander want to save you?”

Ivan looked up and asked again, “Why did Alexander save Esme instead of you?”
