Chapter 16 The Truth About Why Christopher Married Me
The next day, Elissa stayed with me and helped me pack my things.ho empty, cold house finally had some life in it.
On Monday, Elissa and I went to the Valence Group together. Elissa Went to work, and I went to resign. When Elissa found out i wanted to quit, she didn’t agree. “Why should you be the one to leav? They’re the ones who did wrong. Don’t quit.”
“Out of sight, out of mind,” I said.
Elissa thought for a moment. “True, especially since you’re pregnant You shouldn’t get upset.”
Evelyn had already been discharged from the hospital and was now strutting around like she owned the place. Somehow, she got wind of my plans and was waiting in my office when I arrived. As son as I opened the door, Evelyn threw a proposal at me.
“Ms. Royston, this design is unacceptable. Redo IL”
“No need,” I said, not bothering to engage with her. She was trying to throw her weight around, and I was already being polite by not slapping her.
Evelyn dropped the act and stood there, all smug. I heard Christopher is divorcing you. Finally realized your place and decided to let go? Hope, I told you long ago, you can’t beat me.”
“Who wants to compete with you? I’m the one who doesn’t want him I said, clenching my fists and walkin shoes. “You two belong in the trash together.”
In with my soft–soled
“You…” Evelyn was furious but quickly changed her tone. “Forget it;m not going to argue with you. Since you’re getting divorced, shouldn’t you retum the shares Christopher gave–you?”
We weren’t even officially divorced yet, and Evelyn was already this ager. The shares were too valuable and complicated; I hadn’t decided what to do with them yet. But Evelyn was no good person, and I didn’t want Bentley’s hard–earned shares to fall into her hands. Nor did I want to make things easy for her.
I frowned slightly. “Who do you think you are?
Evelyn laughed, looking down at me. “You don’t plan to keep the shares, do you? They were a gift to Christopher’s wife. Once you’re divorced, they don’t belong to you anymore!”
Not wanting to waste more words on her, I said, “Did you get my resignation? Process it quickly, please.”
“Stop bullshitting. I submitted it to the relevant department last night.” Evelyn couldn’t wait for me to leave.
I didn’t respond and sat down at my desk to sort out what needed to be handed over. Christopher probably wanted me gone as soon as possible, too. Resigning would likely happen in the next couple of days.
Seeing my firm stance, Evelyn got anxious. “No matter what, you must return the shares. Don’t be shameless!”
Just then, Connie Thomas came in with my coffee. Without looking up, I instructed, “Show Ms. Valence out.”
Evelyn didn’t dare make a scene in front of Connie, but soon after, eard a commotion from her office. Surprisingly, even after the lawyer drafted the divorce agreement, my resignation hadn’t been processed.
I printed out the divorce agreement and was about to find Christopher to sign it when Connie rushed in.
Hope, Connie said, closing the door mysteriously. “I heard Mr. Bentley Valence is here! He gave Mr. Christopher Valence a good scolding in his office. Who knew someone like Mr. Christopher Valere could get chewed out? But Mr. Valence is so outstanding, and

the company hasn’t had any Haues lately. Why would he…”
My heart sunk. Bentley probably found out about our divorce. I had planned to tell him after it was finalized, but it seemed I couldn’t keep it a secret.
I didn’t want to get involved, but considering Bentley’s health, I to the divorce agreement and got into the elevator. On the top floor, I could hear faint, angry voices from Christopher’s office. Everyone knew Christopher’s temper, and with Donald guarding the doot, everyone was working quietly, afraid to provoke him.
“Ms. Royston!”
Seeing me approach, Donald looked relieved and whispered, “Thank goodness you’re here. Please go in and calm Mr. Valence down.”
“Okay.” I nodded and was about to push the door open when I heard Christopher’s cold, angry voice.
“Bentley, what more do you want from me? You asked me to marry her, and I did. You wanted me to treat her well, and everyone knows I did. You wanted me to give her the shares my mother left me, and I transferred them to her without a word! Haven’t I done enough to follow your wishes all these years?”
