Chapter 31 Christopher’s Lie
Christopher said, “This car was a gift from Bentley to her.”

Was I so disgraceful to you that I couldn’t even use our shared property? Did you have to hide it from your ex–lover? I wondered.
Yet Christopher even bought Evelyn a car right in front of me, comfting her, “Come on, you’re thirty. Stop being so childish. This car is even better.”
On the way to dinner, I kept thinking about what had just happened, feeling foolish. When Evelyn asked that question, I actually hoped Christopher would say something to defend me. Like, “She ha every right to spend my money,” or “Does the need your permission to spend my money? Looking at the city lights outside the car window, I felt a pang of bitterness and a wave of nausea. A gift meant for me, and he could give the exact same thing to someone else.
Elissa was driving and asked, “Still thinking about what happened?”
“Yeah
I knew the divorce was inevitable. But I still feared the constant disappointment.
Elissa squinted her eyes, not cursing as usual, just saying, “If she really gets the same car as you, I’ll teach her a lesson.”
“What are you planning? I sensed something was off.
“Relax, I know what I’m doing. You just focus on taking care of yourself!”
The Mexican restaurant wasn’t far from the car dealership. As soon as Elissa finished speaking, the car slowly stopped at the entrance. This place had been around for over a decade. Though a bit out of the way, the food was great. Every fall and winter, locals flocked here, making it super busy.
Getting out of the car, I grabbed Elissa’s arm and warned, “Don’t do anything rash. I want to get this divorce over with smoothly. Nothing else matters.”
“Got it, got it”
Elissa nodded dismissively and went to get a number for the waitlist Seeing the number of tables ahead of us, we were both stunned. Forty or fifty tables? How long would that take?
Just as we were getting frustrated, someone upstairs opened a window and, with a mischievous grin, called out, “Elissa, come on up! We’ve got seats!”
It was Ivan. I didn’t expect this rich kid to frequent such a down–to–earth place.
Elissa usually found Ivan annoying, but hearing he had seats, her eyes lit up, and she dragged me upstairs. In a semi–open private room, Ivan and Cecil were there. Ivan was dressed in his usual rich–d style, while Cecil preferred a more casual, refined look.
I greeted them with a smile. After saying hello, Elissa scolded Ivan while sitting down, “I shouldn’t have told you I was coming here for dinner.”

Ivan didn’t mind at all, grinning at me. “Well, I guess I nwe Hope aank you.”
The restaurant was bustling with heat and chatter. The private room was only separated by curtains, so the lively atmosphere seeped in. The food on the table looked delicious, making my mouth water,
Ivan poured us drinks and, for once, spoke seriously, “Let’s raise burlasses to congratulate Cecil on becoming the CEO of the MS Group’s branch.”
I looked at Cecil in surprise. “Cecil, you joined the MS Group?”
Connie often gushed about how much she admired Cecil, but it was until now that I realized Cecil’s abilit
abilities far surpassed the trophies he had won. The Valence Group was big, but it only dabbled in fashion. Its main focus was real estate, Al, and semiconductors. However, the MS Group was a true luxury brand, the ultimate goal for most In the design world.
Cecil had a faint smile. “Yeah, it was just finalized.”
“He just agreed,” Ivan wouldn’t let Cecil downplay it. “The MS Group had been courting him since before he returned to the country. He just took his time deciding.”
Even I couldn’t help but admire him. I joked, “Cecil, it won’t be long before Jacquar University does a feature on you. You’re the pride of the school.”
Speaking of which, Christopher had a long–standing column at Jacquar University. Even years after graduating, many students still admired him. Maybe Christopher was always meant to be a star, and was foolish to think I could keep him.
“So, are we here to celebrate Cecil joining the MS Group?” Elissa asked between bites.
“Yep, Ivan nodded. “Eat up; there’s more to come later.”
Ivan glanced at me, adding, “Too bad Christopher couldn’t make it. Otherwise, you guys would be…”
I could tell Ivan didn’t want me and Christopher to divorce.
“Can’t you
shut up while eating?” Elissa quickly shoved a piece of food into Ivan’s mouth.
I forced a smile. “Nothing to be sorry about.”
I knew Christopher had someone else he wanted to be with. Since we were getting divorced, it was normal for us to have separate”
lives.
Yes, it was normal.
As we headed downstairs after dinner, I was lost in thought and missed a step.
Luckily, a strong hand caught me, preventing a fall.
