Chapter 34 What If Cecil Had Saved Me
The air felt like it had frozen. My heart was hanging in the balance
I was still hoping Christopher would say anything to explain.
After a tense moment, all I got was a cold, hard question. “Are you really in such a hurry to get divorced?”
looked up at the glaring lights in the living room, blinked,
The emotions in my chest were so heavy that I could barely breathe and despite feeling utterly shattered inside, I said something cruel. Yes, I’m in a hurry.”
I needed to cut ties with Christopher before my belly started to show I couldn’t gamble with a child.
Behind me, Christopher didn’t say another word. I only heard the shop sound of the door closing.
It felt like all the strength had been drained from me. I slid down against the shoe cabinet, staring blankly at the ceiling. My heart felt empty, filled with a dull, uncontrollable ache.
That night, for the first time, my pregnancy–induced drawsiness didn’t knock me out. I tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
The autumn wind howled all night, as if it was trying to fill my body, leaving me chilled to the bone.
I could accept that Christopher didn’t love me. I could even accept that he married me because Bentley arranged it. But it was too hard to accept that our three year marriage, which I had cherished, as just a sacrifice he made for Evelyn.
I had once been so happy, thinking I was the luckiest person in the world.
The next morning, I woke up to a call from Elissa, asking how my foot was and if I needed to take the day off. I got out of bed and tried to walk. It seemed fine.
Though not fully recovered, I could still walk,
Elissa said she’d be downstairs in twenty minutes to pick me up, not giving me a chance to refuse.
When I went downstairs, my creamy white Panamera was just pulling up. Elissa rolled down the window and eyed my foot suspiciously. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Yeah, Cecil got me some medicine yesterday. It worked pretty well, said as I climbed into the passenger seat.
Elissa raised an eyebrow, started the car, and clicked her tongue. “Imagine if you had liked Cecil from the start. How happy would
you be now?”
“But I’m not sure if he likes me,” I admitted, my laughter tinged with tears.
“You never know,” Elissa said, suddenly thoughtful. “What if it was Cecil who took you to the school hospital and brought you food? Would you have fallen for him instead of Christopher?”
Tchuckled. That’s not possible.”
But what if it is?” Elissa pressed, “Would you?”
I looked out the window at the bustling crowd; thought for a moment, and then shook my head. “I don’t know.”
Love was often about the right moment.

But it wasn’t. It was Christopher I saw, and he’s been my one and only since.
“Fate,” Elissa sighed. “It’s a tricky thing.”
“Enough about me. What’s your deal with Ivan7”
“From a one–night stand,” Elissa paused for effect, then smiled dazzlingly, “to many nights.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
1 raised an eyebrow, “You don’t like him at all?*
“A little,” Elissa admitted, then laughed bitterly. “But what’s the poin My mom said she married my dad because they were in love. But they still bashed each other’s heads in when they fought. I don’t think there is such a thing as true and lasting love.”
1 knew Elissa didn’t believe in love, or even family, actually.
After her dad’s business failed, he turned to drinking, gambling, and beating his wife and daughter. Her mom disappeared, leaving her to grow up with an unreliable father, taking beatings all the time
I didn’t want to make her sad, so I changed the subject with a smile. Then why have you been so good to me all these years?”
Elissa rolled her eyes. “Who was it that cried and got snot all over my hand on the rooftop, begging me not to jump?”
I scratched my nose awkwardly. Elissa had been sitting on the rooftop, and I thought she was going to jump. I ran over and grabbed her, trying to pull her down.
She was startled, thinking someone was trying to kill her, and started struggling. Later, she told me she was just feeling down and wanted some fresh air, but I nearly scared her to death.
However, that incident turned us from ordinary roommates into best friends.
Elissa chuckled and tossed a bag into my lap. “Eat your breakfast. I get you some bread and milk. Take the rest to work for later.”
“You’re the best.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Elissa grumbled. “I only love you.”
That day, Evelyn didn’t show up to bother me. With no distractions, working at the Valence Group was actually pretty pleasant. But by the time I left work, I knew why.
