Billionaire’s Second Chance: Winning Her Back
Chapter 38 The One Who Killed Christopher’s Mom
“It’s exactly as you see it,” Bentley said, his voice heavy with sorrow and regret. “The Valence family owes Isabella an apology. I failed to keep Charlie in check.”
Hearing this, I was in shock.
So, Isabella didn’t just die from a difficult labor. She was pushed down the stairs when she was nine months pregnant. And the person who pushed her was Brenda, who treated Christopher like her own son and ended up in a coma to save him.
My mind was a mess.
‘How could Brenda be so good to Christopher yet be the one who killed his biological mother, Isabella? It just didn’t make sense,‘ I thought.
Before I could sort out my thoughts, Bentley continued, “Can’t figure out why she treated Christopher so well?”
“Yeah.”
Bentley let out a bitter laugh. “It was all about self–interest and manipulation.”
“After Isabella died, that fool Charlie insisted on marrying Brenda. Brenda thought she had covered all her tracks by damaging the surveillance cameras before she acted. She and Charlie pestered me for a long time, forcing me to give in.”
I caught on and asked, “You had the surveillance footage restored?”
Bentley nodded, visibly upset, gritting his teeth. “But Charlie was so bewitched by her that even with the evidence in front of him, he still wanted to marry Brenda!”
In a fit of rage, Bentley threw his coffee cup at the floor.
Even now, he was still this angry. I could only imagine how furious he must have been back then.
Barry, worried that Bentley might have another outburst, quickly stepped in to calm him down and took over the conversation.
“Mr. Valence was left with no choice but to let Brenda marry into the family, but there were two conditions. One, she had to sign a prenuptial agreement, ensuring she had no claim to the Valence family assets.”
“And the other was to guarantee Christopher’s safety and well–being Otherwise, the evidence would go straight to the police.”
Premeditated murder would have landed Brenda in serious trouble.
A chill ran down my spine as I listened.
I never imagined Bentley’s disdain for Evelyn and Brenda had such a shocking backstory
The Brenda Christopher knew was a result of Bentley’s manipulation of her darker nature.
I hesitated before asking, ‘Does Christopher know any of this?”
‘Mr. Valence couldn’t bear to tell him,” Barry said, his voice trailing off.
I had a feeling there was more to it, but I didn’t dare press further.

Even I couldn’t help but feel a bit of sympathy for Christopher. Losing his mother at such a young age, and Brenda, whom Mr. Valence felt indebted to, probably never truly cared for him.
And what about Evelyn? Does she know all of this? The thought made my scalp tingle.
But then again, this wasn’t really my business. At least Christopher genuinely liked Evelyn.
“Evelyn was raised by Brenda, so her intentions are definitely not simple,” Bentley sighed. “That’s why I was against Christopher marrying her from the start. Now that he has a wonderful wife like you, I’m even more opposed to it.”
Bentley paused, then poured me a glass of water himself, almost pleading, “Hope, can you delay the divorce?”
“Bentley.”
“Just delay it, that’s all I’m asking,” Bentley said, almost pleading. “After my 80th birthday, if Christopher still can’t make you happy, I won’t stop you from leaving him.”
“Alright, I’ll do as you say,” I agreed without hesitation.
Since I married into the Valence family, Bentley had always treated me with kindness and never asked anything of me. He never allowed anyone to make things difficult for me either. Now that he was making this request, I had no reason to refuse.
Christopher and I were already living separately. Finalizing the divorce would just make things more clear–cut. There was no rush.
Besides, Bentley’s 80th birthday was just a month away.
Later, Barry escorted me out of the study.
“Mr. Bentley Valence is doing this because he doesn’t want you and Mr. Christopher Valence to regret it later. He wants you both to take more time to think it over.”
I pressed my lips together, about to respond when my phone rang. It was an unfamiliar landline number.
“Hello, are you a relative of Elissa?”
“Yes, I am.”
“This is the Jacquar Police Department. We need you to come down here as soon as possible.”
I panicked, but before I could ask anything, the call ended.
I rushed downstairs, and as soon as I stepped out of the elevator, I saw the enraged Evelyn.
“You’re going out of line!” Evelyn shouted, trying to slap me, but I caught her hand,
My mind was preoccupied with Elissa, so I didn’t have time for Evelyn. “Get away!*
I shoved her hand away and walked off quickly.
I had no idea what had happened to Elissa, and my mind was in turmoil as I headed to the police station.
That familiar black Maybach was tailing my car the whole way, making me even more agitated.
What was Christopher up to now? I was confused.
