Chapter 7 What’s Really Going On Between You Two?
Before I could finish, Evelyn’s sõbs grew louder. “I divorced for you, Cristopher. You know that.”
My mind went blank, and it felt like my blood turned to ice.
The echoes of that video, their intimacy, and Charlie’s insinuations molded into a haunting suspicion.

Christopher, the proudest guy I know since college, never seemed the type to fall head over heels. But the scene in front of me left no room for doubt.
Christopher had Evelyn pinned against the wall, his eyes blazing. Hvolce echoed in the empty hall, dripping with sarcasm. “You divorced for me? Married someone else for me too?”
“When I was dumped overseas, and you were all lovey–dovey with your husband, were you thinking of me?”
“Evelyn, what right do you have to demand anything from me?”
Struck mute, Evelyn’s tears flowed as she clutched at Christopher’s shirt. “I was wrong, Christopher. Please, forgive me just this. once. I had no choice back then.”
“I’m married now.”
“Can’t you get a divorce?”
Evelyn looked desperate, her face full of sorrow, like she’d shatter if Christopher said no.
Christopher let out a bitter
laugh, his teeth clenched. “Marriage might be a joke to you, but not to me!”
He turned to leave, but Evelyn clung to his shirt, refusing to let go.
“Do you love her? Look me in the eye and tell me, do you love her or me?”
Christopher’s tall frame went rigid, his face a mask of cold fury. Just as he was about to speak, a bucket of water came crashing down, drenching Evelyn.
I put the bucket down, feigning surprise. “Oops, sorry! My horoscope said I needed to wash away bad luck today. Didn’t expect you two to be having a moment in the garden.”

I could’ve kept pretending to be the dutiful wife, like I had for the past three years. But everything that had happened recently was driving me to the brink.
“You heard all that? Christopher asked.
Got anything to explain?” I shot back.
Every second of his silence felt like an eternity, and I held my breath waiting.
Finally, he just said, “It’s windy on the balcony. Go put on a jacket.”

Chapter 7 What’s Really Going On Between You Two?
Servants started calling for us saying Bentley wanted to see us. The party had mostly dispersed, and we all gathered in the living room, playing the part of a happy couple.
Evelyn showed up in a fresh outfit, her hair still wet, looking like a bullied child.
“Evelyn, what happened? Who did this to you?” Charlie rushed over concerned.
Evelyn glanced at me, then lowered her head, sobbing, “It’s not Hop fault. She didn’t mean it. Maybe she’s upset about me becoming the design director.”
Such a cheap trick, but some people fell for it,

“It’s okay. If Hope’s really unhappy, I can give up the director position.”
Her offer sounded generous, casting me as the bad guy.
Bentley’s coffee cup hit the table with a thud, his anger evident. “Give up? Do you really think you earned that position? Christopher might’ve given it to you out of gratitude, but you had the nerve to accept it!
“Bentley.” Evelyn stammered, her face pale.
Don’t call me that! I don’t have a granddaughter like you!”
I knew Bentley didn’t like Evelyn, but this was t
was the first time he’d humiliated her so openly.
“Dad, Evelyn’s all alone. Don’t scare her,” Charlie tried to mediate.
“She’s alone? Does that mean Hope’s some kind of bully?” Bentley snapped at Charlie, then turned to me. “Hope, if you’re ever wronged, tell me. I’ll deal with Christopher!”
Bentley had clearly noticed something was off between me and Christopher.
But I just shook my head. “No, we’re fine.”
On the way home, Christopher and I were silent.
My phone buzzed with messages from my dance partner.
Christopher held back for a while, then asked, “Who’s that?”
“My dance partner. You’ve met him.”
He replied coolly, “You two close?
I put my phone away, smiling. “Not as close as you and Evelyn.”
I had planned to wait until we thome for an explanation, but I couldn’t hold it in. “What’s really going on between you two?”
Christopher parked the car calmly. “We almost ended up together.”
