Chapter 266: Suspecting Jason

Jason momentarily froze, but swiftly regained his composure, offering the bowl back to Reese. Mrs. Flynn, anyone with a swift reaction could have done the same. It’s nothing extraordinary, he modestly dismissed. Reese was no fool. Quite the contrary, she was a seasoned expert. Given her own suspicions and the results of her investigations, the notion of Jason being a mere butler was Judicrous. Really? You hardly seem the type. Most people would be shocked in ene a situation. How did you even find the time to think about catching a falling bowl?she retorted.Jason’s explanation was dubious at best.Malcolm had also observed Jason’s rapid response. It was far from ordinary, especially for a man of sixty. At that age, such reflexes were practically unheard of. Had it not been for Reese’s sudden impulse to test Jason, he could have remained unnoticed in the Flynn household indefinitely, his abilities never questioned. This incident also aroused Malcolm’s suspicions. He put down his fork and fixed a stern gaze on Jason. Mr. Tartt, would you care to explain your recent display?Malcolm inquired, voice taking on a serious tone. A fleeting stiffness crossed Jason’s aged face before it relaxed into a warm, creased smile. Boss, in my youth, I practiced martial arts. There were dojos that took on apprentices back then. How else could I have saved Old Man Fly’s life?Jason defended. Reese could never have imagined- without delving into his pastthat such a benignlooking old man could be linked to clandestine organizations or elite forces. It just went to show, one could never truly know what lay behind a person’s facade. Those who appear saintly might stab you in the back; those deemed sinful might not be so bad after all. In this world, it’s never a mistake to remain vigilant. But Jason wasn’t naive either. His words served as both an explanation and a reminder to Malcolm and Reese: he had once saved Old Man Flynn’s life. Both Reese and Malcolm were astute enough to read between the lines. Just as Malcolm was about to press further, Reese gently touched his hand.Darling, let’s just eat. I was merely teasing Mr. Tartt earlier she hinted at something unspoken.Malcolm understood her immediately.Yes, let’s concentrate on our meal. We have a mountain of work waiting for us afterward,he agreed before turning to

need, Mrs. Flynn, Jason. Mr. Tartt, are you sure you won’t join us?But Jason had no time for dining now. He shook his head, No Boss. You enjoy your meal. I must serve tea to the gentleman.Very well then, off you go,Malcolm nodded, dismissing him with an understanding glance. After Jason’s departure, Reese remained quiet. Both seemed to silently agree to finish their meat before retreating to their rooms. As the door closed behind them, Malcolm swiftly locked it.He turned to Reese, his brow furrowed with concern. What’s the story with Jason? Did you discover anything?Reese shook her head, feigning ignorance. No, I was merely testing the waters with him. Nothing surfaced.Malcolm wasn’t convinced. Why test him out of the blue?He knew better than to trust Reese’s casual demeanor. She had a knack for keeping secrets, and it wasn’t like her to probe someone without any leads.Reese knew she couldn’t hide things from Malcolm, but if she refused to admit anything, he was at a standstill. She walked over to the table, took a sip from her glass, and spoke evenly. Any thoughts on Mr. Tartt’s little performance earlier, boss? She was mimicking the way Jason addressed Malcolm.Malcolm reached out to playfully pinch her waist, but Reese dodged with a laugh.Stop it.He turned serious. “Something’s off about Mr. Tartt. I thought he was just the guy

after all, with Grandpa in charge, managing the house staff who saved my Grandpa Flynn’s life. I never really

was hardly my concern. So, after all these years Jason’s looked into it been with the Flynn family, you hadn’t noticed anything? His moves earlier you don’t need me to tell you that they’re no joke.Even if he had trained when he was younger, it was uncanny that a man of sixty could still be so agile and sharp. That was also where Malcolm’s thoughts were gravitating. It seems this Jason warrants a closer investigation.Reese scoffed internally; she had already been on that trail and was gearing up to take action, though it wasn’t the time to tell Malcolm. She patted him earnestly on the shoulder. I’ll leave you to the heavy lifting.Malcolm glanced at Reese with a knowing look and smiled subtly. You’ve got another agenda up your sleeve, don’t you?Reese winked at him mischievously. Do I look like that kind of person? You do. Who knows what you’re cooking up in that clever head of yours. He had her figured out. Whether she was talking or listening, Reese was always plotting.Feigning fatigue, Reese yawned theatrically. I’m off to shower and hit the hay. Exhausted. Tomorrow, she was going to surprise Jason with a significant gift. Seeing Reese rise from her seat, Malcolm casually followed and slipped in right behind her as she was about to close the bathroom door.Malcolm, can’t I even shower alone? After being married for so long, we’ve never shared a bath. Why not?I’d rather not.Come on, babe, let’s give it a shotThe bathroom door eventually shut behind themThe next day, Reese dragged herself out of bed, her body weary and her back sore. She shot an angry glare at Malcolm, who was still

insatiable as a wolf, she thought, wondering how he could work so hard during the day and deep in the comfort of sleep. That man still have so much energy at night. She promised herself to get him back, ideally picking a day when he was dead on his feet from overwork. If it weren’t for matters she had to attend to, she would have happily slept until noon. After quickly getting ready, Reese got into her car and called Calvin.Did you find out where Jason will be today?I’ve got a bead on him; he’s out running errands. I was about to have someone intercept him and bring him to you,Calvin replied, his voice exuding confidence. Reese’s lips curled into a mischievous smile. Good. Let’s give him a warm reception. I want to see just how tough the old man really is.”

–

But keep in mind, Reese, he’s a tough one with a strong will. This might take some time.”

And what is it that you say I have in spades?”

With realization dawning, Calvin responded, Patience, Reese.”

Patience and persistence were, after all, Reese’s greatest strengths
