Chapter 279: Pushing Us to the Brink
Upon laying eyes on Malcolm, Nancy felt her resolve teetering on the brink of collapse. She was already grappling with the challenge of Reese, and now Malcolm had entered the fray. How could they possibly withstand this dual onslaught?Dahlia, too, felt her muscles tighten at the sight of Malcolm. It was unmistakably evident that he was here to bolster Reese’s position. Considering Reese’s commanding presence, as if she could single–handedly hold back an army, did she even require reinforcement?Reese hadn’t anticipated Malcolm’s appearance that day. Clearly, he had done his research on her. Otherwise, how would he have known to seek her out at the Brooks residence?Upon spotting Malcolm, Dahlia’s mind began to whirl. She swiftly stepped forward, her voice saturated with feigned concern.“Brother–in–law, you wouldn’t believe the outrageous and unreasonable behavior she’s been exhibiting. Just look at the state she’s left our staff in. If this escalates, what then? Reese was no longer the Brooks family’s daughter. The Flynns had never accepted her, and now that she had lost her status as the Brooks’s heiress, she was merely an ordinary person – or perhaps even less. If Malcolm still desired her after all this, then something must be amiss with him. With the resources of the Flynn family and his own personal advantages, Malcolm could select any woman he wished. There was no necessity to settle for someone as distant and haughty as Reese, who was purportedly devoid of any real talent. The more Dahlia pondered this, the more determined she became. A mere whisper in Malcolm’s ear, and surely he would divorce Reese. As long as those two separated, she didn’t care who Malcolm chose to marry
ry after witnessing Reese’s downfall.Malcolm nodded thoughtfully, deliberately prolonging his response.“Is that so…“Dahlia couldn’t believe Malcolm hadn’t refuted her. Her confidence swelled as she added fuel to the fire. So, brother–in–law, can you truly handle a woman like that? What’s to say she won’t lose her temper and bring the roof down on the Flynn estate someday? Finn Sawyer won’t know what hit him.“Dahlia Brooks feared that every word she now uttered to Reese was like another tick on a time bomb, destined to detonate sooner or later. Malcolm was fond of Reese, sure, but that didn’t mean he would disregard Finn Sawyer.Reese stood aside, observing Dahlia’s performance with the serene composure of someone listening to a bedtime story. This calmness made Nancy increasingly suspect that Reese was a truly calculating individual. In a typical scenario, if someone slandered you in front of your own spouse, you’d be expected to lose your temper, not maintain your
Malcolm composure like this.Perhaps Reese and Dahlia were in cahoots. But that made no sense—Reese’s expression of shock when walked in was clearly genuine. She must have been taken by surprise as well. Which meant there might still be a chance.Eager to join in, she blurted out, “Exactly, Mr. Flynn. And as it turns out, we’ve just confirmed that Reese isn’t actually a Brooks. Her mother paid us to take her in. It was our kindness that welcomed her. But now, with the truth out, she doesn’t even have the decency to show basic courtesy.“Malcolm scoffed, his eyes gleaming inscrutably, his presence flickering like a shadow. He shot a chilling glance at Dahlia and Nancy.“The Flynn family is more than wealthy enough. Reese or ten like her, we can afford it. We don’t need power plays. As for her character, she’s caught my eye, and that’s all that matters. I won’t allow a bad word against her from anyone–no exceptions!” Dahlia and Nancy were stunned; what was Malcolm thinking? Before they could gather their thoughts, Malcolm continued.“When she was part of your family, I bit my tongue. Now you think, just because she’s no longer tied to you–what, now strangers–you dare insult her in front of me? Are you looking for trouble?” “We only mean… We’re looking out for your best interests, Mr. Flynn. You don’t really know Reese. She’s actually…““Enough!” Malcolm cut her off harshly.Kenneth had this nagging bad feeling like they’d once again gotten on Malcolm’s bad side.He hurried over and pulled Dahlia and Nancy back. Can you two not stop talking for a moment?“The look Malcolm was giving could practically devour someone alive. With a mocking sneer, he stood
casually with his hands stuffed in his pockets and a confident, almost haughty tilt of his head. There’s no point delaying the
inevitable. Either way you slice it, the outcome is going to be the same – and it won’t be pretty for you.“Nancy’s eyes widened in shock as she turned to Malcolm, “What are you planning to do this time?“The truth was, the Brooks family was already at their breaking point.“It seems the last warning wasn’t enough to make an impression on you.” He called out without moving, “Justin, get in here!“Justin stepped in: “Mr. Flynn.” “Now that Mrs. Flynn has confirmed that it’s not the Brooks‘ daughter, there’s no need for kid gloves. Start by acquiring a chunk of the Brooks Corporation’s stock, spare no expense. Then, transfer all those shares to Reese. I want her holding more stock than Colin!“Kenneth gasped, “What did you just say!?“Dahlia Brooks was utterly dumbfounded, “Brother–in–law, have you lost your mind? Taking over the Brooks Corporation’s shares and moving them under Reese’s name, what’s your game here?“It seemed like those with deep pockets truly didn’t regard money as an object. To buy out the Brooks Group’s
a price even higher. Even for the well–off Flynn family, it wasn’t a trifling stocks would cost a fortune, let alone outbid their father matter. What was Malcolm really after?Malcolm’s lips curled in a sinister smirk, “Can’t you see? From now on, Reese will be the major shareholder in the Brooks Corporation. Even if the chairman disagrees, or anyone else for that matter, they have to run it by the major shareholder before making any moves.“If the company took a loss, Kenneth wouldn’t gain much from out if it made a profit, his wife would also get a large cut.Off to the side, Reese couldn’t help but snicker. Clearly, Malcolm was not someone to be trifled with, and this move was a direct hit to Kenneth’s core.Initially, Reese hadn’t considered this angle, primarily because her current situation didn’t really allow such a maneuver. If she used her own influence to start buying up Brooks Corporation shares, a deeper investigation could ensnare her. But Malcolm had no such constraints. He could do as he pleased. Kenneth was close to exploding with rage at Malcolm’s antics. His pride had vanished, and his once boastful demeanor had been replaced by abjection. In utter desperation, he pleaded, “I’m begging you, Mr. Flynn, please don’t go through with buying out our company’s shares. I made a mistake. Would an apology to Reese suffice?“As he finished speaking, he immediately turned his head, disregarding the fact that Reese was his junior or whatever she might have been. If Reese took over as the major shareholder, would he ever have good days. ahead of him?Right now, the most important thing was to squash Malcolm’s idea. “Reese, Dad was wrong. It was all my fault just now. Please don’t hold a grudge against this old man. Could you, please, talk to Mr. Flynn for me?“Kenneth was desperate to grab Reese’s hand, but she recoiled from him in disgust. Her narrowed, disdainful eyes bore into Kenneth. Let me be straight with you,”
