Disregarding his personal sentiments, Everhart had to admit that the two of them were a formidable pair, their commanding presences complementing each other perfectly. Malcolm’s voice, chilling and authoritative, bore down on Everhart, “What I seek is your honesty. You know you’re incapable of protecting Reese adequately. So why, in your selfishness and folly, would you expose her to danger?”
Interacting with intelligent individuals had its perks. A single, succinct statement from Malcolm was enough for Everhart to deduce that Malcolm was aware of everything. However, he was certain that this information hadn’t come from Reese. Given Malcolm’s extensive resources and connections, unearthing the truth would have been a relatively simple task.
Everhart’s gaze hardened, the room falling silent save for the sound of their measured breathing. After a moment’s pause, Everhart retorted, his voice laced with a hint of defiance, “Malcolm, what makes you so certain that you can protect Reese? She is far more complex than you realize. Even now, I can’t claim to fully understand her.”
Reese was an enigma, entirely different from the woman he had once known. He needed assistance in uncovering her capabilities. capabilities that extended beyond the organization. Could any ordinary individual have concealed the situation so effectively?
Malcolm responded, a note of finality in his voice, “Reese is my wife. It’s only natural that you fail to understand her. After all, you’re not the one who’s going to spend a lifetime with her. I have a lifetime to comprehend her. That’s the difference between us. You lack both the standing and the time.”
His words were a thinly veiled insult, a clear indication to Everhart that it was time for him to step out of Reese’s world. Reese didn’t require anyone else’s protection but his own.
Everhart had to admit that he lacked the standing to remain by Reese’s side. However, Malcolm’s arrogance was a bitter pill to swallow. “If you truly understood her, would you need to seek my assistance? Malcolm, Reese doesn’t want you to understand her. No one can penetrate her defenses. You may be closer than I am, but this is where you need to draw the line.”
Everhart had always been aware of Reese’s defensive nature. Even if she had allowed Malcolm this close, he would never be able to delve deeper into the recesses of Reese’s heart.
Malcolm, however, remained unfazed by Everhart’s words. He calmly lit a cigarette, his icy gaze never leaving Everhart. “Everhart, you’re being rather presumptuous. I understand my wife. I summoned you here today to ensure her safety. How can you be so certain that Reese is withholding information from me, not wanting me to be embroiled in trouble?”
As Malcolm flicked the ash off his cigarette, he observed Everhart’s expression darken. “You need to understand that love isn’t about sharing every secret. It’s about fearing that those secrets might cause harm to the one you love.”
Everhart felt a pang of shame at Malcolm’s words. He had always prided himself on his ability to face any situation with confidence. a trait that had made him irresistible to many women.
In the presence of Malcolm, Everhart could feel the gap between himself and Reese gradually widening.

Everhart had to admit that Malcolm’s argument held water.
As he pondered over the task Nolan had assigned to Reese, Everhart found himself lost in thought.
“Even if you are aware, you can’t alter anything or deter Reese. She can be so obstinate that persuasion is futile.”
Extinguishing his cigarette in the ashtray, Malcolm clapped his hands together, a mischievous grin playing on his lips.
“Who claimed I intended to sway Reese? You’re aware of her stubbornness, do you think I’m not?”
Malcolm had made it clear that he wouldn’t obstruct Reese if she was determined to proceed. If this endeavor placed Reese in harm’s way, Malcolm would strive to eliminate all potential risks to ensure her smooth progress.
If any dangers arose that even Malcolm couldn’t neutralize, he would confront them alongside Reese, risking his own life to shield
her.
Everhart slowly came to the realization that he couldn’t comprehend Reese at all, and understanding Malcolm’s thought process was even more elusive.
It appeared that they were indeed a perfect match.
Everhart composed himself before addressing Malcolm.
“Alright. I’ll disclose it. But you must assure me that you will safeguard Reese.”
Malcolm was growing exasperated with Everhart’s response.
‘Reese is my wife, I’m aware of that. Everhart, can we get to the point?”
Everhart met Malcolm’s gaze with a fierce intensity. “Was I not expligit? I’m serious. If anything goes awry, it’s not just Reese who will suffer; those around her will be implicated as well. Reese may project an aloof exterior, but she deeply cares for those in her

Matcalm was confident that he could handle whatever Nolan had asked of Reese.
Everhart noticed the arrogance and self–assuredness in Malcolm, but it wasn’t repelling. On the contrary, it instilled a belief that Malcolm was indeed capable of managing the situation.
After all, the issues with the Harmony Alliance wouldn’t be resolved by Reese alone. Since Malcolm exuded such confidence, why not give him a chance? What if he actually succeeded?
