Chapter 338 A Lesson Learned–1
A gliminer of amusement danced in Malcolm’s eyes as he gazed upward. The girl before him had proven herself a formidable hacker, deftly reclaiming the plummeting stocks without leaving a trace of her actions. Even if the companies were to discover the discrepancy the following day, they would find no evidence to incriminate her. Her skills were truly a marvel to behold.
Everly, too, had discovered the recovered stocks. She slumped into her chair, her expression a mixture of disbelief and disarray. “How is this possible… How did you do it?” she demanded, her voice echoing in the room.
Vincent, though not as quick–witted as Malcolm, managed to piece together the puzzle. He was taken aback by Reese’s abilities, which far surpassed his initial expectations. The audacity of someone infiltrating another company’s website to alter the data was beyond his comprehension. He was certain the company’s staff would soon discover their internal network had been compromised.
Everly, still confused, turned to Vincent for clarification. “What’s going on? Did Reese manipulate the data somehow?”
Vincent shook his head in denial. “No, her data is authentic and reliable. She didn’t tamper with any data. The media will undoubtedly report on this tomorrow morning. If it were a fabrication, she wouldn’t be able to conceal it
Yet, he refrained from disclosing that Reese had acquired the data through legitimate means. She had executed a clever ruse, a feat not easily replicated by others.
Suddenly, the sound of applause echoed from the doorway, followed by a deep, jubilant voice. “That’s my wife! Reese!”
As Reese turned, she saw a man striding in with a confident gait, a proud smile gracing his features. Malcolm’s unmasked emotions were a clear testament to his pride.
The sight of Malcolm, and his praise for Reese, only served to further sour Everly’s already bitter mood.
Finn, still reeling from the shock, was jolted back to reality by Malcolm’s voice. He murmured softly, “You’re back.”
Malcolm, standing beside Reese, respectfully addressed Finn. “Yes, Grandpa. I’m back. I overheard most of your conversation.”
Reese cast a sidelong glance at Malcolm. He had been eavesdropping at the door, yet hadn’t stepped in to assist her. Although she hadn’t required Malcolm’s help, his lack of intervention irked her.
Finn remained silent. Initially, he had doubted Reese’s abilities. After all, recovering a company’s losses in a mere ten minutes was a feat accomplished by few.
Finn observed Reese’s demeanor and the subtle changes in her facial expressions. She displayed no signs of anxiety or fear, only a calm composure. This level of stability was rare in someone her age. It was worth investigating if there was more to Reese than met the eye. If she could prove beneficial to the Flynn family, it would be a welcome advantage.
Finn coughed lightly, covering his mouth, refraining from probing further. He was indifferent to the process, focusing solely on the outcome. As long as the results were favorable, the means were irrelevant.
“Since Reese has indeed compensated for the company’s losses as she claimed, and even restored the company’s stock to its previous value, I will uphold my promise and absolve her of any responsibility for exposing Everly. As for Everly, you should also fulfill your promise and apologize to your sister–in–law.”
Everly was taken aback by his words. Not only was she surprised that her grandfather was asking her to apologize to Reese, but she was also taken aback by his reference to Reese as her sister–in–law. Hadn’t he always addressed Reese by her name? Why had he suddenly altered his form of address?
Could it be that her grandfather’s attitude towards Reese had shifted because she had restored the company’s stock? She found this hard to accept.

Everly pointed accusingly at Reese. “She must have done something Underhanded. Grandpa, how could a girl from the backwänte possess such formidable abilities? Even Malcolm probably couldn’t reprieve all the data in just ten minutes. How could shep-
Malcolm was about to retort, but Reese gently held his arm, signaling him to refrain from intervening.
Reese approached Everly. Despite their similar height, Reese exuded an aura of dominance that left Everly feeling oppressed, as if a weight was pressing down on her, making it difficult to breathe.

Reese was unperturbed by Everly’s reaction. She wasn’t the first to exhibit fear in her presence. It was a natural response to intimidation.
Reese raised her hand, gently tracing it across Everly’s face. Everly’s features gradually stiffened, her body tensing in response.
Reese spoke with a lightness that belied the weight of her words, “Everly, you should understand the importance of taking responsibility for your promises. Do 1, a simple country girl with limited cultural literacy, really need to be the one to teach you this?”
Her words served as a counterattack to Everly’s previous affront, cutting deep into her pride.
Exhausted from the heated exchange, Finn decided there was no point in prolonging his stay. The matter had been settled. “Everly.‘” he urged, “apologize to your sister–in–law immediately. Starting tomorrow, you will work overtime for a month and clean the Flynn family’s house morning and evening as your punishment. I will have someone supervise you.
With that, Finn, his body trembling slightly, ascended the staircase. Everly watched his retreating figure, a bitter realization dawning on her. She had lost this battle, and the sting of defeat was palpable.
Everly shot Reese a resentful glance and a derisive snort before turning to follow Finn upstairs. But Reese’s hand shot out, gripping her arm. “Wait, Everly. Have you forgotten something?”
Everly frowned, her words stumbling over each other in her haste, “I. I didn’t forget anything. Let me go!”
“Grandpa just instructed you to apologize to me,” Reese reminded her patiently.
Everly’s face hardened, her mind racing. She didn’t want to apologize to Reese. She had already suffered a loss, and now she was expected to lower her head and apologize? The thought filled her with embarrassment.
In a desperate attempt to evade the situation, Everly feigned forgetfulness. “Grandfather only said that if I could manage it, I should clean the Flynn family’s house and work overtime for a month. When did he say I had to apologize to you? Besides, you owe me an apology too. You aired my private affairs.”
Reese, understanding Everly’s reluctance, looked at her with disdain. It seems you’re not as brave as I thought. I assumed that if you could scheme behind my back, you wouldn’t fear an apology. After all, Everly of the Flynn family can easily part with tens of thousands. If you ever want to repeat such a stunt, come to me. I might understand myself better than you. Just a thought, okay?”
Reese’s mockery was clear, even to Everly, who struggled to find a retort.
Malcolm, growing increasingly impatient, his face a mask of coldness, interjected, “Everly, apologize to your sister–in–law. You’re an adult and must face the consequences of your actions!”
Everly looked at Malcolm, her disappointment mingling with a deep resentment towards Reese. How could this woman warrant Malcolm’s unwavering support? Despite her years of silent devotion, she had failed to earn his love.
It was only now that Everly realized Malcolm would never stand by her side, regardless of the circumstances. Even if Reese were in the wrong, he would unhesitatingly side with her. With this realization, she questioned the point of their entanglement. The future was still uncertain.
Summoning her courage, Everly swallowed her grievances and apologized to Reese. “Reese, I’m sorry. It’s my fault.”
Anyone else might have hesitated to accept such an apology, but Reese was different. She not only accepted it with grace but also assumed the role of the older sister, lecturing Everly. “It’s good that you recognize your mistake. But remember, if you repeat it, I may not be as lenient. After all, as my husband’s sister, I expect more from you.”

She emphasized the word “sister,” a pointed reminder to Everly of her place.
Everly kept her head down, wishing she could disappear. In her mind she hurled a thousand insults at Reese.
She thought highly of herself, didn’t she? With the support of Malcolm and Grandfather, she probably didn’t even remember her own last name. Everly nodded perfunctorily, “Okay, I promise I won’t make the same mistake next time.
