Chapter 80 Dream On
“If I didn’t show up, do you think your stepmother and sister wouldve let you be?”
There was a softness in Malcolm’s eyes that seemed almost to spill over. He reached to smooth a stray lock of hair from her forehead, but Reese instinctively dodged his touch, her gaze wary.
“What are you doing?”
Amused by her apprehension, he chuckled. “Just fixing your hair, sweetheart. What’s there to be scared of? Unless, you think I might bite?”
Reese couldn’t help but laugh at the thought. “You? Try anything?”
She wasn’t boasting, but even if Malcolm had intentions, he’d have to consider her own capabilities first. She wouldn’t want him ending up hurt, especially not with Finn Sawyer ready to throw a fit
Her bold laugh was full of confidence, and as the sunlight streamed through the car window, it made her all the more radiant.
The more Malcolm watched her, the more he was convinced that Reese was a treasure. Her personality, and the very words she spoke, set her apart. She had a streak of independence that made her distinct in a crowd.
She was the woman Malcolm should have married, the unique one amidst thousands in his heart.
He leaned in closer, his cool lips brushing against her earlobe, his voice deep yet teasing. “Well then, let’s just wait and see. Just don’t come crying to me later.”
Reese didn’t quite catch the hint in Malcolm’s words. She thought he simply wanted to challenge her to a little test of skill, and she gamely accepted the offer.
“Alright, let’s see who ends up crying first,” she playfully taunted.
Malcolm laughed heartily, “Oh, that’s definitely going to be you.”
He hadn’t yet witnessed a situation where a man could be brought to tears by such a thing.
Justin Chabon wished he could disappear.
The mere thought of Mr. Flynn regaining his full mobility filled Justin with anticipation. He imagined the spark and fireworks between these two headstrong figures could brighten up anyone’s life, not just their own.
As Malcolm recalled Reese descending the staircase earlier, he noticed the bracelet in her hand that looked like it had seen better years nothing to compete with the gifts he’d lavished upon her. He was curious why she would risk facing Nancy head–on just to retrieve that particular piece.
“What’s with the bracelet?” he inquired with a hint of curiosity.
Reese’s expression softened, “It was my grandmother’s. She gave it to me before she passed away. I had to marry into the Flynn
family in such a rush that I didn’t get the chance to bring it with me
The mention of her grandmother brought a shadow over Reese’s usual bright smile, a touch of melancholy that could tug at anyone’s heartstrings.
Malcolm had heard bits and pieces about Reese’s grandmother, mostly through her files. It seemed she had passed away a few months ago under mysterious circumstances, found dead in the streets after just stepping out for a while.

“Do you know how she died?” he asked.
Reese turned to him sharply, surprise flickering in her eyes, “You know about my grandmother’s death?”
The suddenness in her voice alarmed Malcolm, a flicker of surprise crossing his deep–set eyes.
“No, I just heard you mention it,” he responded calmly.
Reese slumped her shoulders in disappointment, her mouth twisting slightly.
“Then why ask,” she retorted, annoyed for getting her hopes up that Malcolm knew something about her grandmother.
Watching her reaction, Malcolm wondered if Reese suspected there was more to her grandmother’s death.
He coughed lightly, feigning nonchalance, “Maybe if you ask your–Darling nicely, I could look into your grandmother’s death for you.”
Reese scoffed disdainfully, “In your dreams.”
