Malcolm’s expression darkened. None of the tenderness he had shown to Reese remained, and his tone was now ice–cold.
“Who told you to inform her?”
Justin bowed his head. “I’ll get in touch with the platform right away
Outside Malcolm’s office, Reese’s ivory complexion returned to its usual unemotional poise.
They both knew the other’s gambits all too well; it just wasn’t time to tear down that façade yet. Malcolm’s repeated probes came from his lack of concrete proof.
Absence of evidence was no trouble for her–she could conjure up ways to stay unscathed even if there were any.
After reflecting on her own acting, she found herself cringing slightly.
Settled back at her desk, Reese opened the files and got to work, when Sophia Linden approached. As the department head and undoubtedly the most beautiful woman in the office, Sophia was the popular favorite among the male colleagues, her delicate charm never went unnoticed.
Recent rumors of a sensation named Reese had reached her before her plane touched down; a supposed ugly duckling who had somehow transformed into an unrivaled beauty with an elite aura–an impeccable ice queen.
Of course, Sophia had to see for herself.
She was a sight in a red sheath dress, cut low enough to reveal a generous hint of cleavage. With every coy smile and subtle gesture, she exuded a sensuality that was in stark contrast to Reese’s understated demeanor.
Reese, for her part, was entirely focused on the spreadsheet in front of her. The task wasn’t particularly tough, just incredibly time- consuming, and her fingers were flying over the keyboard to the point of exhaustion.
Sophia Linden had been standing beside her for a while now, not that Reese gave any indication of noticing. Fixated on her computer screen, Reese’s slender fingers danced across the keys with such speed that, were it not for the accurate tally of numbers on the display, Sophia would have thought Reese was just hitting keys at random.
Turning her head, Sophia shot a glance at Lilly, “Didn’t you say she got the job through backdoor channels and only had a high school diploma? This speed, this accuracy, does that seem like high school work to you?”
Lilly couldn’t quite figure Reese out and pulled Sophia aside. “Look, I’ve only recently taken over here, and don’t have all the details on Reese. But her resume does say she’s only a high school grad, that’s true.”
Sophia Linden felt Reese was all smoke and mirrors. She’d seen all sorts, and to her, Reese was nothing special- just someone with a pretty face and a certain poise. She had no curves to speak of, absolutely flat as a board where it counted..
Pushing past Lilly, Sophia marched up and rapped her knuckles on the desk in front of Reese. “Hey, newbie.”
Without so much as a glance, Reese responded, “In a minute.”
Tension filled the office once more, and their colleagues craned their necks, anticipating the newcomer’s next move. Sophia Linden, an old hand at the company and a crafty leader, waited with impatience.
Reese was just a regular worker; what waves could she possibly make?
Never one to be ignored, Sophia now knocked more firmly on the desk again. “Reese!”

With an unhurried tap on the Enter‘ key completing her input, Reese finally looked up, languidly. “What’s up?”
Her tone was so nonchalant and devoid of any formality.
Sophia knew of Reese’s growing presence in the department–aloof and defiant, not deigning to acknowledge anyone. But Reese’s casual indifference caught her off guard.
This woman was far too cavalier for her liking.

Since Reese wasn’t extending any pleasantries, Sophia felt no need to offer any herself. Throwing a project file onto Reese’s desk, she said, “I’ve heard you’re quite capable. Even managed to land a deal that Mr. Flynn himself couldn’t secure.”
With a lazy flick of her eyelid, Reese responded, “And?”
Sophia’s face, carefully made up, tensed slightly with a flicker of anger starting to surface.

“Reese, what’s with the attitude? I get that you might not see eye to eye with Lilly as your team leader, but I’m the department head. I’ve been here since this company was founded. Don’t you have any respect for your superiors?”
They had seen many newcomers, but never one as brash and overbearing as Reese. She acted as if she owned the place.
Reese remained unfazed. Ever since she started at the company, she had faced her fair share of troublemakers, and ordinary employees probably wouldn’t dare cross her.
But those who fancied themselves as team leaders or department heads? They seemed to make it their mission to get under her skin, and it was starting to really get to her.
Why couldn’t everyone just mind their business and live in peace?
“I haven’t disrespected you. If you have work–related instructions, I’m all ears. But you come at me, accusing me of disrespect without even a hello? That, I can’t accept.”
Though somewhat of a loner, she had a clear sense of right and wrong. Whether these people were genuinely assigning her work or just looking for trouble, Reese could see right through their facade without them having to say a word.
Her pointed response caught Sophia Linden, who had been so haughty moments before, off–guard.
“There’s a contract, a partner wants to terminate it. You handle it.”
Reese didn’t even glance at the papers as she took them on board.
“Got it.”
“And one more thing, we have a mixer tomorrow night. Everyone from our department is expected to attend. Prepare a talent or something.”
At the mention of the mixer, Reese frowned. She wasn’t fond of these bustling events, filled with people faking pleasantries.
“Can I skip it?”
“No,” Sophia Linden said with finality.
Lilly whispered cheekily, “Miss Linden, from what I’ve heard, Reese is a country girl with limited education. She probably doesn’t have any talents to show off.”
“That’s okay. It’s just a welcome gathering for new colleagues. Since she’s here, she can perform whatever she knows. We’re all colleagues; no one’s going to laugh at you.”
Sophia Linden’s words left Reese without an out.
Her standoffish personality, along with an incident where she’d had a physical altercation with Isaac at work, made her colleagues wary. Many even mocked her behind her back.

If she refused, her relationship with her coworkers would only sour further.
Some of her colleagues couldn’t help but gossip, “It’s clear as day, they’re just setting Reese up for embarrassment.”
“What can you do? That’s how it is. Besides, Miss Linden has been the star of the company for years, and Reese has just swept in and stolen the spotlight.”
“Yeah, if she wasn’t so full of herself, I might have considered riding her coattails. Who knows, maybe one of the guys at work would take a fancy to me,” the voice dripped with a mix of sarcasm and wishful thinking.
Sophia Linden waited with thinly veiled anticipation for Reese’s response. If Reese agreed, great. If not, she’d likely become even less popular among her coworkers.
It was a lose–lose situation for Reese.
The whole office held its breath, waiting for her decision.
