Adam had always been like a flower on a high peak, so the scene of him crying uncontrollably after my words made me feel particularly
strange.
But I didn’t know how to face him either, so I simply moved back to the dorm, which also made it convenient for Noah to keep pestering me.
Mom came to see me once later, and it was then that I learned she had seen the packaging of that lingerie in Adam’s room years ago. At first, she thought her son had some unspeakable cross–dressing fetish, but later she found out what had really happened.
On the phone, Mom was 9, “I’m sorry, child. I truly treated you as my own daughter, but I couldn’t stake Adam’s future on it.”

Adam came to my university to find me several times after that, but I was either busy with various club activities or internships, and it turned
out that I had no time to see him.
Later, Adam stopped coming, but when I went home for holidays, we would occasionally tacitly avoided each other.

Two years after college graduation, I finally gave in to Noah’s persistence and agreed to his proposal.
Noah handled the entire wedding himself. As he said, he would only get married once, so he wanted the whole city to know how beautiful his
wife was!
I actually asked Noah privately why he wanted to marry me.
Noah’s mouth, always full of nonsense, seemed to give a serious and straightforward answer, only that day.
“Because you’re beautiful, of course. But most importantly… in high school, I accidentally hit you on the head with a ball when I was playing. At that moment, I thought, ‘Oh no, I’ve made her stupid, I have to take responsibility for her.”
“What?!” I laughed and pushed him away, but couldn’t help turning back. The wedding photo Noah had carefully chosen was hanging on the wall. The us in the photo, we really do make a good match!
Epilogue:
Adam had never thought there would be a day when he wouldn’t be with Melody.
When he was little, he had a serious illness. His parents found a fortune teller who said they needed to find a girl to suppress the fire in his
body.
That’s why Melody came,
At first, he really liked this girl who suddenly appeared, but that bit of liking turned into embarrassment after people kept teasing that his parents had found him a little bride. It made him subconsciously keep his distance from Melody, even though he always couldn’t help but look at
her.
Later, Adam became more and more accustomed to always having Melody behind him. They seemed to silently believe that they would be each other’s future partners, even though the two of them hardly spoke more than a few words a month.
In high school, Adam still maintained his cold attitude to draw a line between Melody and himself, but something seemed off. He belatedly realized that at some point, so many people had started noticing Melody.

Adam finally couldn’t sit still after overhearing someone say they were going to confess to Melody.
Adam had actually discovered the gift Melody had prepared for him in her room early on. He found it when he went to deliver milk to Melody
room.
That silly girl always thought the warm milk every night was prepared by Mom, but it was actually him who warmed it and put it in her room while she was showering.

But he lost control. Faced with the overwhelming humiliation towards Melody, Adam didn’t know what to do. He didn’t even have the courage to clarify.
Melody transferred schools, but she still followed behind Adam.
After going through a period of guilt, he gradually recovered, thinking that they would end up together eventually. He could apologize when the
time came.
But Adam never thought he wouldn’t get that chance.
Adam didn’t even get to tell Melody that he didn’t believe a word of what that bastard Paul said. As soon as he left home that night, he beat Paul up.
He didn’t go home that night because the injuries on his hands were too obvious. He was afraid Melody would see them and her eyes would turn red again.
He also didn’t get to say that it was Cassy who shamelessly insisted on going to their house for dinner, and later when they were exchange students abroad, she confessed to him several times but he rejected her.
He felt that although he had never given Melody any response in the past, at least his heart was pure.
Until he came back, and everything had changed.
Melody was engaged to another man, smiling at someone else, all of which nearly drove him crazy with jealousy.
But he seemed to have no right to feel this way. As Dad said, he was the one who first showed the attitude of not wanting Melody.
But he couldn’t get over it. Maybe it was because Melody knew his dark side, or maybe it was because Melody said she had never liked him.
The love he thought had persisted for years turned out to be fake all along.
Adam couldn’t figure it out. Was it the despicable him who never responded and used underhanded methods that was more hateful, or was it Melody who had pretended to like him all along but actually had no feelings that was more vile?
He couldn’t figure it out. As he drank the last sip of wine, Adam, with red–rimmed eyes, looked at the beautiful bride in a wedding dress in the distance and raised his empty glass to her.
“Congratulations on your marriage, Melody”
Adam put down his glass and staggered away.
