Chapter 27
A few days later, Benedict was confined to a stretcher, his world blanketed in darkness. Snow–white bandages covered his eyes, and every few hours, fresh blood soaked through, forcing Odette to carefully change them with a steady hand.
“Odette?” Benedict‘ s voice was a hoarse whisper when he finally stirred.
“Hmm, it’s me,” Odette replied softly, her tone a mix of tenderness and worry.
“Are you alright?” Benedict‘ s concern was palpable despite the fog of pain clouding his voice.

Odette furrowed her brow, her eyes clouded with frustration and fear. “Benedict, how many times do I have to tell you to go back to the country? You never listen. Was it really for this moment? Do you know how close you came to losing everything?”
Benedict paused, momentarily stunned by her words. “I didn’t come for this
moment… but when it came, I was glad to be here. Glad I could save you.
و,
Her chest tightened at his words. “I can’t even imagine what would‘ ve happened if you had stayed in the country. If I had heard the news of your accident, I would’ve lost my mind!” Benedict‘ s voice cracked as
emotion overtook him.

“Then what about me?” Odette shot back, her voice a mixture of grief and fury. “What would I have felt seeing you like this? If you had died because of me, do you think I could live with myself, knowing you were gone?”
Each word fell heavy in the air, thick with unspoken pain. “Benedict, you‘ re always so selfish. You never think of anyone but
yourself. You never think of what this would do to me.”
“You knew how dangerous it was here, but you still came… making your family worry!” Odette couldn’t hold back the tears
anymore.
She had cried for what felt like hours before
Benedict finally woke up.
Chapter 27
Even though they were long divorced, and there was no love left in her heart, no hope, no reason to turn back, she still couldn’t stand seeing the person she once loved lying
before her like this.
She had fought so hard to break free, to leave it all behind. And yet, here he was, following
her as if love could bind her once more.
Once, she had been trapped in this same web. And what had it led to? Benedict had grown bored and sought some new thrill.
Benedict paused, the weight of her words sinking in. Finally, after a long silence, he spoke. “I didn’t know you… felt like this.” Odette’s chest tightened. “Don’t worry,” she said, her voice steady despite the storm

inside. “I saved you because I wanted to. I don’t want your gratitude, and I don’t need you to repay me. I deserve the injuries, the death. But I won’t use this to manipulate you, to force you into forgiving me or being with me.”
“My right hand is a mess. But for your eyes, the best time for surgery is within ten days. If I can perform it, there’s a sixty percent chance you’ll regain your sight.”
Odette hesitated, then met his gaze.
Benedict, understanding, nodded. “Well, guess I’m unlucky, hurt just when you‘ re hurt. Does your hand hurt?”
Odette lost her composure then, her emotions crashing down. “You could go blind,

Benedict! Do you even understand that?!”

“The surgery here isn’t guaranteed, and I’m the only one who can perform it,‘ Odette emphasized, her voice steady despite the storm brewing inside her.
Benedict sighed deeply, his gaze heavy with regret. “So this is my punishment from the heavens,” he murmured. “When my eyes were injured, you saved me. I even told reporters that you were my eyes.”
A bitter laugh escaped him. “I never expected to face a second earthquake in my life, one that would take my vision again. And in that moment, no one could save me except you… but you were the one injured.”
“Odette, this is my fault. You don’t need to

feel guilty. I mean it,” Benedict whispered,
trying to offer comfort despite the pain he felt.
Odette took a deep breath, her voice softer now. “I’ve already informed your parents. They’ll be here in a couple of days.”
“I
Benedict‘ s face tensed with unease. “I saved that old man, not you.”
“Are you worried your mother will tear me apart?” Odette asked, a bitter smile curving her lips.
“I’m worried you’ll get hurt,” Benedict sighed, his words full of concern.
Two days later, Benedict‘ s parents arrived.
