Chapter 28
When Amanda Evander saw Benedict‘ s upper body wrapped like a mummy, her heart shattered in an instant. The sight of him, so fragile, broke something deep inside her.
Stuart Evander took one glance at his son, then quickly averted his eyes, his chest tight with sorrow.
Upon hearing that only Odette could perform the surgery on Benedict’s eyes, Amanda sank to her knees before her, tears streaming down her face. She feared Odette harbored deep resentment for Benedict and wouldn’t lift a finger to help.
“Please, don’t do this. Get up, please…”

Odette pleaded, her voice trembling with
worry.
“Odette, I’m sorry. We were blind to you before, but now… you‘ re the only one who can save him. We were once husband and wife. Are you truly going to watch him lose his sight?” Amanda cried, her voice breaking.
“Please, I beg you, save him.”
“It’s not that I don’t want to help, but I can’t,” Odette replied with a heavy sigh. “If I wait for my hand to heal, it’ll be too late to save his eyes. My advice is to take him back home and find a better
ophthalmologist.”
Amanda’s eyes fell on Odette‘ s injured

hand, and with that, she collapsed,
overwhelmed by despair.
Hearing the sound, Benedict, despite his pain, rolled off the stretcher, desperation in his voice. “Mom, please, don’t blame her.
It’s not her fault.

“I told you not to come, but you insisted! Of course, it’s your fault!” Stuart snapped, frustration and worry lacing his tone.
Benedict winced, crawling toward his parents with great effort. “Mom, Dad, please go back. It’s too dangerous here for both of you.”
Amanda wiped away her tears and gently helped Benedict sit up. “Son, we’ll go
go back home. I’ll find you the best doctor.

Benedict forced a bitter smile. “Mom, the
best ophthalmologist is Odette…”
Amanda’s heart sank, but she tried to hold onto a sliver of hope. “Let’s look for others. There might be someone better. Maybe.”
“I’m not going back,” Benedict said, his tone firm, as if the decision had already been
made in his heart.
“You should go back,” Odette said coldly, her words sharp and unwavering.
“I want to stay here…..

Before Benedict could finish, Odette interrupted him. “Right now, you‘ re a patient. If something else happens, we‘ 11 have to find a way to move you, and if there’s any problem, we’ll need to treat

you. You can’t help here. Why are you
staying?”
“But…” Benedict‘ s voice cracked with
anxiety, his brow damp with sweat.
Stuart made a swift decision. “Someone, tie him up and get him out of here. We’ll talk when he’s healed.”

“Dad, I’m not going back!” Benedict punched the ground with a force that rattled the earth beneath him.
Odette looked at the scene unfolding and, with a steady voice, said, “Everyone, leave. I need to speak with him alone.”
Amadeo glanced at Odette with concern, but she only gave a small shake of her head, signaling for them to go.

Once the room fell quiet, Odette sat beside Benedict, the weight of the moment settling
between them.
“Benedict, do you know when I hated you
the most?” she asked softly, her gaze drifting to the barren land in the distance as if seeking solace in the emptiness.
Benedict shook his head, his confusion
evident.
“The moment I was most touched… was when I found out I had lost my uterus, and you said you went out in the rain to get a talisman for my safety.”
“At that moment, I thought I was the happiest woman alive.”
“Everyone said I was lucky–lucky to have

you: rich, handsome, and so devoted to me,‘ Odette chuckled softly, a trace of
bittersweetness in her laugh.
Benedict‘ s face softened, and he shook his head vehemently. “No, I was the lucky one. Without you, I would‘ ve been blind by now… or maybe even dead.‘
Odette’s voice grew calm but heavy with emotion. “But the moment I felt the most pain and anger… was when I found out that, while I was lying on the operating table, you were with Millicent.”
“I’m not bringing this up to stir old wounds. I’ve let it go.”
“In South Africa, people face life and death every day. When it comes to love and hate,

life and death are even more serious. Here, there’s nothing that can’t be let go of.”
Her words pierced Benedict‘ s heart, sending a sharp ache through him.
He suddenly understood that no matter what he did, no matter how hard he tried, he could never win back her love.
Not even by sacrificing his life.
Odette had long since made her decision,
stepping out of his world and leaving him behind.
