Lori was late. She had promised to start training again and was well on her way there when Grace called and canceled
due to a family emergency. Lori couldn’t blame her, but she also had to go to training and needed someone to watch the
baby, so she had stayed home till Gabriel came back to take over. She had hurried out of the penthouse, in nothing but
sweats and slacks, her gym bag over her shoulder with a pair of socks almost falling out.
She stopped at the lobby to stuff it in. One of Gabriel’s men was waiting at the parking lot to driver her to the training
ground. She was late already and she was also sure that he must have been waiting a while.
In her hurry, she bumped into someone and her whole bag came tumbling down again. She muttered a string of
apologies as she picked up her bag, not even glancing at the person before turning away. The person touched her hand
and she turned, alarmed and confused.
Her eyes narrowed as she saw who it was. Axel Walker. She looked around wondering how he had slipped past security
and realised that there were no recognisable werewolf guards around. In the past few days, they had relaxed the security
since Sabine was basically powerless, but Lori was still curious as to how he had known where they lived. That must have
also been Sabine’s doing.
Axel looked just like she had remembered, creepy. Even more creepier than she thought he was. He had a lewd smile on
his face that made her uncomfortable.
“What are you doing here?!” She fired at him.
“Relax. I just want a word.”
Lori raised an eyebrow. She looked around again, examining her surroundings like she had been taught. There was
nothing out of the ordinary, Axel appeared to have come alone.
“And this was the only way you could get a word across? Ambushing me?”
Axel looked surprised at her statmemnt.
“This is not an ambush, on the contrary it’s an intervention.”
“Did you get my letter?’
“Pretty sure Gabriel wouldn’t have shown it to you.”
He murmured underneath his breath. Lori folded her arms.
“He did actually. And I’m sure by now you should have figured out that we want nothing to do with you.”
“Is that really what you want dear?”
He persisted and she nodded.
“Yes. It is.”
“Are you sure?”
“What’s your problem Axel? What’s your catch in all this? Why are you so interested in helping?!”
Axel sighed, he placed a hand on his chest, for a moment he looked sincere but Lori could tell it was all a facade.
“Because I genuinely want to help you find your son. And I also believe Sabine should be stopped.”
“Gabriel and I are perfectly able to handle our own issues.”
She answered dismissively as she started walking away.
Axel scoffed.
“Are you sure? Because it pretty much sounds like you’re failing.”
Lori was going to ignore him, but then decided that there was no use in ignoring hm. He was going too far and she was
determined to put him in his place.
She turned around.
“I don’t know what is it you want from me, or us. But I can assure you one thing.”
Axel looked amused.
“What’s that?”
“You’re not going to get it. That, I promise you.”
“And next time, stay the fuck out of my way!”
She flipped him off and walked away.
Axel clenched his fists as he watched her walk away.
*****************
It had been years since she stepped into America. Years. When she got out of the plane and stepped on american soil in
new york, she could feel a sense of nostalgia as she remembered her younger self. How so desperately she had wanted
to leave so she could leave her past life alone. She had left with a trobled heart and a past she so desperately wanted to
forget and now, she was back a changed woman. Time had changed her, but at least it had been kind on her, kinder than
she had anticipated.
Although her kind aged slower and were sometimes deserving of the gift of long life due to their heritage, Ione had not
really thought she would possess the gift, despite having such a turbulent past. But looking into the mirror, she did not
look her age.
She was fifty-one. Well in her prime in nephilim years, but her face still looked smooth and ageless. Graham had always
told her should could easily pass as a woman in her late thirties and she believed him, it was not merely flattery.
They had some business to attend to before she could even start looking for the boy. Ione only hoped she could finish
them all as fast as she could so she could take the next flight to Denver, Colorado.
“How are you feeling?”
Graham asked.
“Like I’m twenty-five.”
She murmured and Graham smiled.
“How long has it been?”
She didn’t keep track of the time, but it was well over a decade.
“Oh I can’t be too sure.”
Graham looked at his phone again.
“Lael would be so happy to see you. She hasn’t seen you in a decade.”
Ione smiled bashfully at the thought of the High Protector of the nephilim order taking time out to see her. Lael and Ione
had been best friends, but lived two separate lives. Lael went through the honorable route that every nephilim dreamed
of, being important enough in the community to be given the honor to protect it and Ione had simply slithered away
after having her daughter.
“I think she might have too much on her hands. I would appreciate the gesture though.”
Graham shook his head.
“She definitely would want to see you. That’s one thing I know.”
It was New York and the air was chilly, winter was only a few weeks away and Ione wondered how her daughter planned
to spend christmas. She spent the rest of the trip looking at the shops reminiscing about the past till they finally arrived
at their destination.
As the car came to a halt, Ione could see Lael and two other men waiting for her in front of the building. Lael had a proud
smile on her small face and the men that flanked her were huge, nephilims who most likely worked in the Order. She
suddenly became jittery, when she had sent a call for help, she knew what to expect, but now that she was facing it, it felt
even more real.
“Ione!!”
Lael squealed as she hugged Ione tightly.
“Lael. It’s been so long.”
She murmured as Lael still held on to her. They both pulled away slowly, with Lael toucing Ione’s face tenderly.
“Let’s go inside. We have much to discuss.”
She murmured as she dragged Ione inside the buiding. Graham and the two other men followed behind slowly.
They had much to discuss and Lael couldn’t stop talking as she ushered Ione in, past the elevator and way past the halls
till they finally reached her floor. Ione gave her a rundown of eerything that was happening and Lael was shocked more
than once.
“Have you contacted her?!”
She asked long after they had settled in, someone brought Ione and Graham cups of coffee to drink.
“My daughter?”
Ione asked. The words was strange in her mouth and for some reason it even felt stranger to use after years of believing
she had passed away.
Lael nodded.
“No. I haven’t. I was hoping I could do that after the mission.”
Lael sighed as she shared a look with one of her guards.
“You know before we can find one of our own we need to establish a secure connection. The boy, he isn’t in our records
and I think it’ll be even more harder to find him since your daughter isn’t in our records either.”
Ione nodded.
“Yes, I have thought of that. But what about me? Can I be used to establish a secure connection?!”
Lael looked doubtful.
“How old is the boy?!”
“Barely a year.”
Ione answered. She could see the answer on Lael’s face.
“There’s no seeker strong enough to find him. But if you can contact his mother, that is, your daughter, we can get to him
as fast as we can.”
“And you know the longer route… it’ll take days, possibly weeks before we uncover the hideout.”
Lael hesitated.
“What is it?”
Ione urged her to go on.
“Depending on how strong her nephilim abilities are, she’s the only one who can find him.”
**************
“That bitch?!”
“Who the fuck does she think she is!!“
Axel had come back home in a fit and Sabine was hiding a smile knowing that he was butthurt by whatever Lori had told
him.
He had sought her out again, and while she would have been available to tell him how bad of an idea it was, he didn’t
seek her advice, or her consent to. He only asked for her last known address and she told him about the penthouse they
lived where she had her kidnapped.
She was surprised that he had actually seen her, given how tight the security of the place had been after the kidnap.
Axel shrugged off his jacket, his face contorting in anger. Sabine watched in amusement.
“Give me my phone!!”
He barked to one of his men who quickly scuttled away.
His phone was brought to him and he made a call. Sabine tried to eavesdrop but he walked far away from her, into a
room that had walls so thick even her werewolf hearing couldn’t penetrate.
She waited for a while and then he came out, much calmer than he had been before, with a small smile on his face.
Now, that look, she didn’t like.
“What happened?!”
She asked, tying to keep her voice light.
Axel grinned.
“I just got off the phone with a prospective client. And a doctor. We have our very first buyer!”
Sabine looked confused.
“Buyer?!”
Axel nodded.
“Yes.”
“That stupid bitch wants to run her mouth to me?! Yes well I’ve decided to not wait until the boy is older. The doctor said we could get at least ten vials of blood out of him since he’s supernatural.”
Sabine looked mortified.
“Axel he’s just a baby!”
She nearly screamed.
Axel was quiet for a while as he seemed to contemplate her words. Then he walked up to her and stood in front of her.
Then he put a hand around her neck. Sabine looked at him in shock. Axel pushed her to the nearest wall, his hand
tightening around her neck.
“Now, If you don’t want me to lock you up, I’d suggest you stay out of my way and don’t ever question my decision
again!”
