Hello?”
“Who is this?!”
Lori asked as she rolled on the floor.
Oh Myra had kicked her ass during training. In fact, she could barely feel her legs. Her muscles had been out of use for a
while. It had only been about a week or two since she was out of training yet it felt like it had been years.
“Loretta? Am I speaking to Loretta?”
Lori sat up. Something about the voice was oddly familiar.
“Yes?! Who is this?”
“This is Ione.”
Ione.
Ione.
Where had she heard that name before? She could have sworn it was familiar.
“Ione what? From who?!”
“Ione Verstrynge. A friend of yours gave me your number. Her name is Astra.”
That was when it clicked.
Astra had told her.
That her mother was named Ione. And that she had heard of her. Lori couldn’t believe her ears!
She couldn’t believe that she was talking to her birth mother. As shocked as she was, she also felt overwhelmingly angry.
It had been years, what reason did the woman have to call her now?
“What do you want?!”
She asked coldly.
“I want to help you Lori.”
Lori almost scoffed, tears blurring her vision.
“I’m not sure what I need help with.”
“Astra told me about you. She wrote me a letter to help, she said your son was in danger. I intend to help.”
Her heart skipped a beat.
Astra had done that for her?!
She really did?
Lori was touched, that despite the fact that Astra had been captured, tortured and put through hell all because she had
helped her, she still managed to look out for her.
“And how can you help with that?!”
“I will be in Denver in the next six hours. I’d like to meet you so we can discuss the way forward.”
Myra was looking at Lori strangely now, wondering who she was talking about.
Lori realized that Ione has still not mentioned that she was her mother. That sort of stung.
“And how do I know that I can trust you?!”
She asked and there was a brief silence.
“Because I’m your mother.”
She finally said as she ended the call.
Lori stared at the phone long after the call was ended.
“What’s wrong?!”
Myra asked as she looked at Lori. She rushed to her side and gently touched her shoulder.
Lori shook her head.
“It’s… I can’t even explain right now. I have to talk to Gabriel.”
She murmured as she dialed his number.
“Your mother?!”
Gabriel sounded absolutely gobsmacked. When Lori had called him, she had almost sounded incomprehensible with the
sobbing and the talking and the nose blowing. He had told her to come home quickly so she could explain properly.
And when she got home and mentioned her mother again and the fact that she wanted to see him, he was inclined not
to believe the strange woman.
“It could be a trap.”
He added and Lori shook her head.
“I don’t think so. But if it is, I’ll find out in the next six hours more or less.”
Gabriel looked at her with wide eyes.
“You’re not actually thinking of going are you?!”
Lori stared at him, wishing he would understand. This wasn’t just anybody, this was her mother. She could see that he did,
but it was fighting with himself to not believe her.
“Gabriel…”
Gabriel sighed.
“Well then you’re not going alone. If you’re going I’m coming with you.”
Lori sighed as she looked at the text again. The text had come in after the call, it was a location from her mother and it
specifically told her to come alone.
“She said I should come alone.”
Gabriel shrugged.
“She abandoned you for years I don’t think she’s in the position to be making demands. I’m not letting you go alone.”
Lori agreed. She would feel better if Gabriel was around so he was coming with her, whether or not Ione liked it.
“All these years… I can’t believe it…”
She murmured.
Gabriel sat next to her, pulling her into his arms, Lori rested on his bare chest. He stroked her hair gently.
“I don’t know what would be worse to find out… knowing that she gave me up willingly and never looked back or her
losing me and her failing to find me till now…”
“I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.”
He whispered gently into her ear.
Lori knew she would, but it didn’t make things any better. Because the truth would hurt and the truth was hard.
Perhaps the hardest pill for her to swallow would be finding out her mother never truly wanting her. Discarding her and
leaving her for all those years without ever looking back or staying in contact.
Lori wondered if she had another family. Perhaps a better one with kids she actually liked.
The thought of being unwanted by her own mother haunted her deeply.
“And what if she never wanted me…”
She asked and Gabriel paused.
“Then she made the greatest mistake of her life losing you.”
He continued stroking her hair and his words somehow made her more calm and less anxious and she closed her eyes
and decided to rest.
*****************
Emilia’s cries had woken them both up. Realising that they had fallen asleep, Lori and Gabriel rushed to the baby’s room
to pick up the baby. Gabriel looked at the time as he bounced Emilia on his hip.
“She would arrive in the next two hours. You should get some more rest while I clean up and feed the baby.”
Lori shook her head as she rubbed her tired eyes. Something told her eyes were swollen from all the sobbing she had
done during the ride back home.
“Oh no. I’ve slept enough. Let me help you with the baby, you should take a shower.”
She scrunched up her nose and Gabriel gave her a look. He sniffed his armpits.
“Are you implying that I stink?”
Lori balked.
“I never said that… but you do need to go shower if you’re coming with me.”
“I can’t have you smelling like diapers when you meet her.”
Gabriel raised an eyebrow.
“Oooh. Already eager to impress her are you?!”
Lori’s cheeks flushed.
Probably. She didn’t even realise what she was doing.
“Just go! I’ll feed Emillia.”
She took Emilia from his arms and bounced her on her hips.
Gabriel left the room after kissing her forehead and Lori went to look for bottles to feed the baby.
As the hour drew nearer, Lori became even more nervous and anxious. She had taken a bath and spent an ungodly
amount of time looking for what to wear.
What did one wear when meeting their mother for the first time?!
Gabriel had endlessly tried to calm her down but it was of little use, she was jittery no matter how much he tried.
Eventually, she found clothes to wear and the perfect shoes to match. Ione called her again, this time, Gabriel listened in
on the call.
She called her to tell her she had arrived in Denver and was driving over to the location. Lori and Gabriel go over their
plan, just in case it was actually a trap.
“I go in first. I scout the area and then when I find no threat, I will mind link you and let you know everything is fine.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Good. And I’ll appear five minutes later to introduce myself to my mother in law.”
Lori paled.
“Oh don’t call her that when you see her.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“Oh I don’t plan to.”
“And don’t forget to not interfere while we’re talking. If you want to tell me something and it’s urgent, you use the mind
link.”
Gabriel nodded.
The doorbell rang.
“That must be Draco and Lila. They’re watching the baby.”
He answered as he stood up to answer the door.
*********************
Ione got to the Cabin first. Lael had reassured her that it was safe. She had also given her five of her best nephilim,
courtesy of the Order. They had scouted the area first, then deemed it safe enough for Graham and Ione to go inside.
Then they had waited.
It took Lori at least ten minutes to arrive and one thing that was whispered into her ear by one of the nephilim guards
was that she wasn’t alone. Ione had not actually expected her to listen, surely her werewolf mate must have been the one
to come with her.
She waited with bated breath, till Lori alone appeared on the front porch and opened the door, by then Ione was already
standing. Ione was mildly shocked when she saw her. Lori was stunning. Her own daughter… in the flesh.
She dressed simple, a dark grey jeans with a cream sweater. She had long dark hair just like hers and her eyes and her
face was entirely the same as hers. A splitting resemblance, even Graham looked amused.
The two of them stared at the other awkwardly, not quite knwoing what to say to each other. Not quite knowing how to
start. Graham cleared his throat, Lori broke out of the gaze and nodded.
“Right. Can we get into it? We don’t have much time.”
She murmured and Ione nodded.
“Yes. I suppose we don’t.”
The two of them sat opposite sides of each other.
“You said you can help me find him. How exactly can you do that?”
“How long as he been missing?”
Lori sighed. Pretty much since he was born. She had not even held him before.
“Since he was born. It’s a long story.”
She murmured.
Ione nodded.
“Well, I don’t know how much you know about our kind but…”
“I don’t know a lot.”
Lori retorted. Thanks to you, she wanted to add but she held her tongue. It was best to concentrate on the task at hand.
And on sending Gabriel a mind message that the coast was clear.
Ione nodded.
“Right.”
“Well, one of our abilities is the ability to find each other. As long as there has been a connection before, there is a strong
possibility that we can find each other when one of our kind is missing.”
Lori raised her eyebrow.
“You mean you could have found me all these years?!”
Ione hesitated.
Graham intervened.
“Your mother, unfortunately doesn’t have those abilities…. even if she did, she didn’t use them because it was assumed
that you were better off without her in your life.”
“That’s the stupidest excuse I’ve ever heard.”
Lori answered as she turned to her mother.
“Who is this?”
She pointed to Graham.
“My confidante. Graham Atkins.”
Her mother replied.
“And how do I find my son? How are you sure I have these abilities you speak of?”
Ione sighed.
“Because your father had them.”
Now, things were getting interesting.
Her father?!
“I have a father too?”
Ione shook her head.
“Let’s not get into that now. It’s imperative we find out whether or not you can make the connection to find your son.”
“How do I do that?”
Lori asked and Ione signaled for one of the nephilim in the order.
A tall dark man with long hair in braids appeared, there was a parcel in his hand.
“Have you made the switch?”
Ione asked.
“To turn?”
Lori assumed her mother was talking about the transformation which included wings and all that. She nodded.
“I have.”
Ione nodded.
“Excellent. You’ll need to make it now.
