It all happened so fast.
Everything.
And Lori saw how fast life could change in the blink of an eye. How sad and gloomy it wasn’t
Elliot didn’t wake up. No matter how much she c cried and pleaded for him to wake up. Gabriel had to pry her away from
his side when the backup finally arrived.
Draco had managed to hold on to Lyle before he ran away and Vara didn’t get far away quickly.
Gabriel’s men apprehended her.
Lori watched as Elliot’s lifeless arms dangled while he was carried away. Lori followed Gabriel to the car and back to the
penthouse when it was all over.
Even though the dawn was breaking, it seemed as if they both made a silent agreement to go back to sleep since they
didn’t get enough sleep.
Lori was shook to her core.
It all seemed surreal. Almost like a fever dream. She really couldn’t believe that Elliot was gone.
She washed up and cleaned his blood off from her body. The wrist she had bitten was healed, not even a scratch on it.
Nothing to show that she had helped out.
She and Gabriel silently went back to bed.
The morning after was not better. She woke up late in the morning, it was almost a few minutes to twelve and the sun
was already up. Even Gabriel wasn’t in bed and he had left. He left a note saying he has business to take care of and that
she could sleep in.
She didn’t want to sleep in.
Closing her eyes was torture.
All that kept coming up was Elliot’s face. His eyes half opened, the blood on his lips, all the color drained from his face.
The image was an endless loop in her mind.
He was young. He was full of life. He didn’t deserve it.
Filled with rage and vengeance, Lori finally dragged herself out of bed and put on decent clothes.
She was going to kill Vara herself.
It was the least she could do.
************
“Have you… have you broken the news to his mother?!”
Draco asked and Gabriel nodded.
The general mood was sober. All activities in the underground were suspended to show their respect.
One of their own had died. In the worst possible way…
“She sounded devastated. Hung up quickly too..”
He didn’t want to break the news to her but it had to be him. The woman had screamed and hung up. His grandfather went silent for a long time then started talking about funeral preparations.
Draco nodded.
“We must be prepared to tell her the whole truth. Will you tell her about Lyle too?”
“I’ll have no choice but to do so.”
Gabriel shrugged.
“He’ll be put to death. Do you think she’ll be happy to hear that?!”
Draco exclaimed.
Honestly Gabriel didn’t care much for Lyle. In the grand scheme of things and on the list of his priorities Lyle ranked very
low.
He was the reason his own brother was dead. It was mostly his fault. If he had just stayed out of their lives… Of course he
deserved punishment. But who knows what his mother might think of when she finally sees her long lost son. And her
current only child.
Gods.
Vara too… he knew she was despicable, but he still couldn’t fathom why exactly she killed Elliot. Did Sabine send her?!
Why would Sabine want her to kill Elliot?
Or did Elliot do something to piss her off.
She was currently in a holding cell, for the meantime while he decided what to do with her. Lyle too.
He was sick to his stomach. Seeing Lori so sad, so desperate to wake him up… it pierced his heart. Her pain.
They were just happy… a few hours ago he had felt on top of the world with her by his side. He had slept good with her
by his side and now things had gone horribly wrong again…
First the kidnap… now this?!
And the fact that he would also always share in the blame for Elliot’s death for making Elliot go on the mission to retrieve
his brother as penance for his wrongdoing.
He regretted it now. He regretted not bending the rules for his own cousin. Because now his cousin was dead and he had
one less family member.
Besides Lori and Elliot were close. One could even consider them best friends. He had saved her life too. He didn’t know
how she would deal with the pain.
“Someone’s here to see you Alpha.”
One of his guards walked up to him, interrupting his thoughts. Gabriel raised an eyebrow. The underground was closed
off limit from non Moon fang werewolves. Who would want so see him?!
“Who?!”
He asked as he glanced at Draco who looked equally confused.
“Your mate.”
The guard simply said and Gabriel nodded his head.
“Let her in.”
She wasn’t allowed to leave the penthouse without him for her own safety… but she still did. He was going to let his
slide this time just because she was grieving.
She walked down the stairs in a purple dress, with a black jacket over it. She had dark circles under her eyes… they both
didn’t get enough sleep and she must have been crying.
“Lori… how did you know I was here?”
She had been to the underground before but there were at least three other places he could be and she had come here.
Right where the prisoners were currently being held.
She shrugged.
“Instincts I guess. Isaac who guards the penthouse dropped me off.”
Her voice sounded cold, distant.
Gabriel gave Draco a look. That was enough to clear the room.
Lori settled in on an armchair.
“How are you feeling?”
Gabriel asked as he walked up to her and she shrugged.
“Horrible.”
“You?”
She asked.
Gabriel shook his head, his arms folded, still reeling from all that happened.
“I- I can’t even process what happened yet…”
She nodded.
He had tossed and turned all night. She could also feel his distress in his sleep. Safe to say they had both gone to bed
with their hearts heavily burdened.
She didn’t think Gabriel even got an hour of sleep before he left the bed.
“I’ve known Elliot all my life. Since he was in diapers… since he went to middle school, since he was in high school and
when he moved in with me… he was that one family that I had around.”
Lori squeezed her eyes shut.
Then she sighed as she relaxed into the chair, she patted the empty seat next to her and urged Gabriel to seat instead of
him standing like a statue.
He obliged.
“We didn’t get along to a great start… but he was my friend….”
“He showed me what friendship was and I’d be forever grateful for that.”
“He protected you. He fought for you…”
He added.
“He did…”
There was an uncomfortable silence between them. Lori slowly took in her surroundings while Gabriel pondered on how
to bring up the next topic…
“Do you blame me?”
He asked softly.
Yes.
Yes she did. If she said otherwise she would be lying.
“I do.”
She whispered.
“I blame you for sending him on that stupid mission.”
“I blame you for not pardoning him when you could have.”
“I blame you for letting him out there without protection from his own alpha!”
With every word she said Gabriel flinched. She was right.
Lori blinked back tears. She wiped them quickly.
“Elliot is many things… yea he shouldn’t have been fraternizing with his brother… but he didn’t deserve to die for it.”
“Lori… I, more than anyone else right now regret it. I cannot stop thinking of how different things would have been if I
didn’t send him out there…”
“Then why is his killer still alive?!”
Lori asked and Gabriel froze.
“Vara?”
He asked and she nodded.
“She should be dead by now. You should have avenged him already by now…”
“I can’t just kill her off like that Lori… she’s Sabine’s beta.”
“So?!”
“Right now, she’s the only one who can lead us to Sabine. The only one who has actual connections to Sabine and your
son.”
“With her, we can find Sabine.”
Oh.
She had not even thought about it that way… Sabine.
He was right. But Lori doubted Vara would talk…
Vara was loyal to Sabine. Very loyal.
“With the way you werewolves go on about loyalty… do you think she’ll talk?!”
Gabriel sighed.
“It’s worth a shot.”
