Lori paused. She turned her head swiftly, waiting for the ball to drop.
Vara finally mustered the strength to stand up. Her knees trembled visibly.
“Sabine may be my alpha… but in the grand scheme of things… I’m nothing to her.”
“What do you mean?”
Lori asked as she narrowed her eyes at her.
Vara sighed. She had been locked in the cell for days and even though she had barely said a noteworthy tangible word or
anything that could help them, she had heard everything. Everything that was happening all around her.
Draco wanted Gabriel to give the order to kill her, Gabriel didn’t. They had tried reaching Sabine, all to no avail. No
exchange would be made, but Gabriel somehow held on to the hope that he could exchange Vara for Lori’s son.
Vara knew enough of Sabine to know that she would never give up Lori’s boy for her.
“There’s only one thing I can help you with… and it’s this piece of information I’m about to give you.”
Lori listened carefully, Vara took a deep breath.
“Your mate is hoping that Sabine will do anything to have me back… maybe even exchange your son for me.”
“Tell Gabriel that Sabine would never do it.”
Lori shifted uncomfortably… she had suspected it. That that was the only reason Vara was still alive. That they were
hoping to use her to get to Sabine but so far Vara wasn’t divulging her secrets and Gabriel wasn’t giving up that easily.
“If she cares so little for you, why are you protecting her?”
Vara shrugged.
Lori noticed the dark circles around her eyes, her face also looked thinner. It was clear she wasn’t eating well, so she
looked weak. Weaker than Lori had ever seen her.
“She’s my alpha. And I’m her beta. It is my duty.”
“A duty that will lead you to your death.”
Lori spat out but Vara didn’t even flinch.
“Then kill me already. Tell Gabriel to kill me and have it done quickly! I’m tired of waiting.”
Lori was a bit taken aback by her statement.
There was an uncomfortable silence between the two of them as she pondered on her next choice of words.
“You’d rather die?!”
Lori whispered and Vara nodded.
“I would.”
Lori shook her head.
She didn’t like Vara and she would never forgive her for what she did to Elliot, but something about her was very pitiful,
even slightly pathetic. The fact that she would rather die than reveal the secrets of an alpha who was ready to discard her
at the slightest inconvenience.
An alpha who in fact had already discarded her, with no plans of saving her or helping her out.
Sabine didn’t deserve that kind of loyalty. And a small part of her hated that she had that kind of loyalty. If Vara had been
born to a better pack, one who’s alpha valued her, perhaps she would have been a better person, a great beta… but no.
Life never took the easy path.
“She doesn’t deserve that.”
“She doesn’t deserve your unending loyalty. And she certainly doesn’t deserve you.”
Vara shrugged. A single tear fell from her eye. So small that Lori almost missed it. She didn’t think the battle hardened woman ever cried. She didn’t look like the type to cry and Lori certainly never imagined she would see her cry.
“When I think long and hard about it… nobody really deserves anything. I know that I didn’t even deserve to be a beta…
I made my fair share of mistakes… I wasn’t perfect…”
Lori didn’t stop her. She sighed.
It was hopeless, she thought as her hands fell to her side.
“Well then. If you would rather die… then I guess this is goodbye.”
She turned to leave.
“I didn’t mean to kill him.”
Vara finally confessed.
Lori stopped but didn’t turn back, holding back tears.
“I was sent to kill Lyle. What happened with Elliot… it was a terrible mistake…”
“When I close my eyes… I still see his face.”
“I’m sorry.”
Lori heard every word, but she chose not to reply.
She walked away.
****************
*Five days to the Alpha Summit. *
“I’ve picked out some dresses I think you’d really like.”
Myra said as she brought the rack towards Lori who was seated on the sofa breastfeeding. She only breastfed once in a
while now, when she felt the need to. Not too much so it wouldn’t affect Emilia or give her too much growth spurts. But Gabriel had deemed that it was probably better for her immune system and might have been the only reason Emilia had
not fallen sick ever since she was born.
Lori watched as Myra removed the clothes from the rack.
She had been tasked to find her a dress and while Lori had tried to argue it, Gabriel insisted that Myra be her personal
stylist, for she was in the werewolf world long enough to find the perfect dress for her.
One that would command attention, while also making her look soft and elegant.
“Is this really necessary?”
She asked and Myra nodded. Lori patted Emilia gently as she removed her from her chest. She was done feeding.
“I’m afraid it is. You must look the part.”
Myra muttered as she looked through the selections of clothes. All personally handpicked by a high end New York stylist,
from some of the best designers. All the types of dresses that were from the latest season. Nothing but the absolute best
deserving for a Luna.
Gabriel’s budget for Lori had no limit.
“Alphas summits didn’t used to be this extravagant. In the earlier years alphas attended in their wolf forms and met in
the woods under the shadow of darkness.”
“Now it’s all pomp and pageantry and who seems to look the richest and strongest. An utter show off.”
She murmured as she examined the dresses. Some were glittery, some were black and others were as white as the clouds.
They also all looked so expensive… Lori was too scared to touch them.
She held Emilia close to her chest as she watched Myra.
“I don’t see the need for them…”
Myra continued.
“Nothing an ever be decided in that one night and there’s always a fight at the end of the night but it’s still compulsory
to attend.”
“What happens if you don’t attend?“
Myra scoffed.
“Oh well. Many things. They might perceive you as weak. Or believe you have conflicts with your pack. See it as sign of weakness. Or believe you’re dead. Many many things.”
“And once they suspect either of these best believe the sneaky ones will try and take your territory as their own.”
Myra warned.
That sounded brutal. But Gabriel had told her his world was brutal and cutthroat. She just didn’t think it would be that
bad.
“What about this? Black is timeless.”
Myra said as she spread a gorgeous black dress on the nearby chair. It was long and midnight black, but as she turned it
to the other side Lori saw that the back dipped way too low. Her whole backside would be exposed.
“It has no back.”
She deadpanned and Myra nodded.
“Exactly. I thought it would be nice for you to turn and show off your wings.”
Lori tilted her head in confusion.
“Gabriel and Draco said I have to appear weak so they wouldn’t see me as a threat.”
Myra contorted her face. The disgust evident in her features.
“Oh no no. That’s a bad idea.”
“You’re to be a luna. Weakness is not a feature you should be displaying.”
“You need these alphas to know that you are not to be trifled with. That you are not a mere plaything.”
Lori was still confused.
She wondered if she should tell Myra about Sabine’s rumors and what it might mean for her. And how it might affect
how they would view her if she went there with her wings in full display.
Myra saw the expression on Lori’s face and sighed.
She took a seat beside her.
“Modesty is not a virtue in our world. It might probably be the worst virtue to have…”
She mused.
“Gabriel’s strong. Our pack is strong and if you’re wondering if I heard the rumors yes I did. I heard them too.”
Lori turned her head sharply towards her and Myra shrugged.
“If any alpha is stupid enough to believe Sabine’s lies… then they should fear you, not try and fight you.”
There was truth in Myra’s words. Clearly the rumors were still only rumors. And frankly she had done nothing wrong to
them in any way for them to be plotting her downfall.
Strength was needed. If the Alphas summit was full of pomp and pageantry then Lori had to make sure she put on quite
a show for them.
She smiled at Myra.
“You’re right. I should show off my wings.”
