She had never imagined that in her wildest dreams she would be attending such an extravagant and high end party. The
thought had never even crossed her mind before. From the limo ride to the time it took them to get out of the limo and
into the daunting mansion, she was utterely fascinated by it all.
She had made the full switch to her nephilim form right before they walked into the Summit, the two guards that were
placed in front of the large paint glass door had gaped when her wings appeared. Gabriel looked at her with adoration as
he watched her transform. Trasnformations were easier now and relatively painless for her so she found herself being more and more comfortable with them.
The heightened senses, the feel of power coursing through her veins and then the wings. They were the best part of it.
She had been so uncomfortable with them at first. They had felt heavy, but now when she flexed them it felt like she was
flexing a part of her, it felt like it was a muscle. It was extraordinary how her muscles now worked. Although flying would
take her months to master, she couldn’t wait to start practicing how to fly.
Very soon.
As the doors to the Summit opened to them, Gabriel and Lori walked in and the air stilled. Many turned around to look at
them and time seemed to stop as they waltzed into the ballroom. She was the odd one out. The only one with wings and
the looks on their faces, she couldn’t decipher what it meant but she knew some of them must have secretly feared her.
She kept her head high just like she should. Gabriel was next to her, tall, unwavering, a cold look on his face.
That was the mask he had to don on, the cold and mean look that he had to adopt, gone were the soft smiles and small
gestures.
‘You’re doing great.’
He said through the mind link and Lori’s façade slipped a little as she smiled. He was trying to reassure her, especially
with so many eyes on her.
It was unnerving, but in her nephilim form it didn’t feel so bad. Something about being a nephilim made her more
confident in herself. She was more confident in her form than she would ever be ordinary.
Kate was the first familiar face that Lori laid eyes upon. And there was a scornful distasteful look on her face. She did
come with her father just as Lori anticipated, in a blood red strapless bandage dress. She looked stunning, but Lori
looked away smugly, enjoying the scornful look on her face. A small part of her had secretly wished that the scar on her
face remained. But because she had fed her her blood it was most likely healed.
Almost as if the slap had never happened even though it was just a few weeks ago.
The first alpha to approach them was a bushy haired man Gabriel told her was named Ivor. The man had a red
overflowing beard, long shaggy blond hair and small beady eyes. He practically rushed towards them.
“Caine!”
He bellowed to Gabriel as he pulled him into a hug, his eyes settled on Lori.
“Ivor. You look well.”
Gabriel answered calmly as he pulled away from the hug and gave Ivor a handshake.
Ivor quickly turned towards Lori.
“And who might this beautiful lady be?”
“My mate. Loretta.”
Lori gave him a small smile as he turned to her.
“Pleased to meet you Alpha Ivor.”
Ivor gleamed, a smirk on his face as he turned to Lori with an oustretched hand, Lori gave him her hand he kissed it
generously, his lips lingering for too long till she slightly tugged her hand away.
“I heard rumors that you took a Nephilim mate… I didn’t know they were true.”
“And where did you hear such rumors?”
Gabriel raised his eyebrow and Ivor shrugged.
“Small talk. You know walls talk, people talk…”
He was evading the question, which most likely meant he heard it from the source.
Gabriel scoffed.
“Interesting… I wonder if Sabine had anything to do with that.”
Ivor flinched a little.
“Ah Sabine! Do you think she’ll be coming? I don’t think she would.”
“She’s welcome to come. Why won’t she?”
He retorted and Ivor shrugged.
“I should be asking you that. Word around is that you had some kind of fall out.”
He briefly glanced at Lori. Lori kept her mouth shut, her jaws tightening a little as she tried to look uninterested in the
conversation.
“Fall out?! That can’t even describe what that woman did.”
Ivor raised an eyebrow.
He looked around and balked when he saw Kate and her father approaching.
“Oh anyways. Maybe we can have a chat about that later. I’ll be seeing you and your lovely mate around.”
With that he walked away.
“I don’t want to deal with them.”
Lori whispered as she looked straight at George and his daughter Kate coming towards them.
“We’ll keep it short.”
Gabriel replied in a clipped tone as he squeezed her hand reassuringly.
“Mr Caddel.”
He spoke to them formally.
“Miss Caddel.”
Kate looked a bit taken aback but hid her shock with a wide smile.
“Gabriel!! Lovely to see you here.”
She commented as she gave him a warm smile, he didn’t return the gesture. Kate ignored her.
Her father on the other hand openly glared at Lori.
“Gabriel… I didn’t think you’d be coming with your mate.”
He stated and Gabriel raised an eyebrow.
“She’s going to be my Luna soon. So yes she had to come.”
George scowled.
“Oh I know that. But did you think it wise that she come here like that? Making such a blatant arrogant display?”
“Blatant arrogant display?”
Lori repeated.
The man turned to her.
“Yes. At this point it seems you’re begging for a fight.”
Lori raised an eyebrow.
“Why would me mere presence warrant a fight? Do the alphas here have such fragile egos that someone like me scares
them?”
She taunted.
George looked mildly furious. Kate on the other hand took a step forward.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
She muttered towards Gabriel as she tugged at her father’s suit and they left.
Lori released a sigh as she turned to Gabriel.
He had a proud smile on his face.
“You did good.”
Lori smiled.
“Thank you. I might change back soon though… my short fuse can’t take any more of this…”
Gabriel shrugged.
“You can if you want. You’ve made your point, one they wouldn’t be forgetting anytime soon.”
Lori felt calmer. She liked him by her side. With him he was better, he made her safer. She was glad they were together.
They took a walk to the balcony where Lori quickly changed back to her normal human form, when she came back with
Gabriel they were all somehow still staring at her.
She and Gabriel took a turn about the large ballroom. The music was lovely and the wine was copious. It was a great
atmosphere but it felt too tense.
Gabriel only said hello to the alphas he was close with.
They were at least five and it was tiring speaking to them all but he did. They were very interested in Lori and managed to
ask her some questions. Lori kept her answered short and precise.
An alpha came up to the makeshift podium to make several announcements and also announce the official time for the
summit. Meanwhile waiters went around serving drinks. Gabriel had warned her to pretend to drink since the drinks were
always too heavy on the alcohol.
As a werewolf he could control his intake because he had really high tolerance, but Lori did not. So she didn’t take much
of a sip but held the glass of wine in her hand.
The music was great, the ambiance lovely enough for the room and Lori was getting familiar with quite a number of
people. Not to mention the stolen glances from some of the alphas once in a while.
There was a makeshift bar at the end of the ballroom and the snack table, both of which Gabriel had urged Lori to
abstain from.
Finally Lori got tired of being shackled by Gabriel’s side as he talked extensively about work to a fellow alpha and
business partner.
She took a walk around the ballroom herself. Without Gabriel it was even more awkward, people openly gawked at her
but she went to the bar, clinging to her glass of wine.
The waiter tried to offer her another drink but she politely declined. He was werewolf too, just like everyone else in the
room. Everyone except her and maybe the human Luna of one of the alphas she met.
“Hi.”
Someone said from behind and Lori turned to look.
“Hello.”
She answered.
The man stood next to her. Lori didn’t quite know how to put it but something about him was weirdly familiar.
He was too with dark brown hair, his tuxedo shirt was buttoned down to reveal a chest full of hair. He was a
conventionally handsome man, with vivid hazel green eyes similar to hers and a mustache.
“We’ve not had the pleasure of meeting.”
He said as he extended his hand.
“No. We haven’t.”
Lori replied.
She didn’t extend hers.
The man looked at her again, when it was clear that Lori wouldn’t shake him he dropped his hand.
“Axel. Axel Walker.”
She fought the urge to look shocked. This was the alpha Myra had specifically told her to stay away from and he was
right in front of her.
“Loretta Wyatt.”
She answered uneasily.
“I saw when you came in. Your wings are magnificent. I came over hoping to get a closer look but I see you’ve put them
away.”
“I have.”
Lori answered dismissively.
The man persisted.
“You must have heard about me. I’m the Alpha of the Shadow Wolfe pack. Your mate and I are not the best of friends but we’re acquaintances… of the sorts…”
“He never mentioned you.”
Axel shrugged. Lori noticed that his eyes were raking all over her body, it made her feel uncomfortable. And small.
She wished she had not gotten rid of her wings… at least she wouldn’t be so intimidated. She would be the one
intimidating him.
But then she had put them away and to transform back mid conversation seemed foolish.
“Well… you’re new to our world so it is expected.”
New?!
Lori almost scoffed.
The man looked around swiftly. Lori could see that his eyes were searching for Gabriel.
She couldn’t find him either.
“I see you’re not drinking.”
He commented.
Lori dropped her glass.
“I’ve had enough.”
Her glass was still full.
“Seems you barely had a sip.”
“And why does that matter to you?”
The man chuckled.
“I like you.”
He said and Lori raised an eyebrow.
“Excuse me?”
“You’re feisty. You have a smart mouth on you.”
Smart mouth?!
What did that even mean? Lori wanted to ask but she withheld her question. The sooner this man left the better it was
for her.
“I’m curious about you. Your kind… would you mind answering some questions for me?”
“Perhaps somewhere more private?”
His voice had dropped to a whisper.
“Find answers elsewhere.”
She snapped at him.
Her eyes darted around.
Now where was Gabriel?!
Axel looked offended.
“Did you somehow forget who you’re talking to?”
Lori turned to him.
“Oh sorry.”
“I suggest you find your answers elsewhere Alpha.”
With that, she made a move to leave but he stretched out his hand and held her wrist.
Lori was stunned by his audacity.
What did he want with her?!
He smiled coyly at her but his hand was clamped hard against her wrist.
“I’m asking nicely now.”
“Remove your hand or I’ll be forced to remove it myself.”
She warned but his grip only got tighter, to the point where it became uncomfortable.
There was a glint of mischief in his eyes.
He was having fun. He was actually finding humor in what he was doing.
He was doing it all on purpose.
She thought outraged as she contemplated throwing his hand away from hers.
Would that be seen as aggression? An attack? She had to think about her actions clearly.
“I’m asking nicely Loretta.”
Lori hated the sound of her name on his lips. It sounded dirty.
“Axel… remove your hand or I’ll tear it off.”
Gabriel said behind her and Lori was so relieved to hear his voice.
