And for a long time Gabriel didn’t even know if she could see what he was dreaming about. If she could see the glimpses
of what he imagined of their future.
Until he felt her breaking away from his tight embrace. Slowly till she was untangled from him.
He opened his eyes slowly and saw that her wings were retracting, her features slowly went back to normal and her eyes went from the fearful glowing white to their familiar hazel color.
He reached out and caressed her face gently, his finger catching the single tear that dropped on her cheek.
“You dream of marrying me?”
Lori whispered.
Gabriel smiled.
So she had seen it then.
“I dream of the day you’re truly and fully mine. As my mate, Luna and of course, my wife.”
Lori covered her mouth to stop the sob that threatened to escape her lips. She had seen everything. The glimpse into his
head where he had imagined a quiet life for them. Not even a life as an alpha or a Luna. But a simple life really.
One that looked so ordinary and mundane compared to what they knew that it was almost unreal and unattainable.
With Emilia as a little girl and even Jack running in the background. He had even wished Elliot was still alive.
“A white picket fence? Really?!”
She chuckled.
“I think it looks rather nice.”
He shrugged and Lori laughed.
“I’ve never lived in a house like that before…”
“I haven’t either.”
“We’d also probably make terrible neighbors.”
He remarked and Lori grimaced.
Oh that was true.
“Oh it would! The howling, the wings… the superhuman kids… they’d freak out.”
“And what about you being alpha?”
She asked and Gabriel sighed.
“For a long time in my life, being alpha has been my identity. It still is… just for a few moments I’d like to shed it off and
be known simply as a man.”
“An ordinary man.”
Lori shook her head as she touched his face.
“There is nothing ordinary about you Gabriel Caine.”
She whispered.
She then caught a glimpse of her fingers and saw that her claws were gone. She didn’t even notice that she had
transformed.
She touched her back eagerly to feel her wings but felt the smooth taut skin of her back instead.
“It’s all gone?!”
She exclaimed and Gabriel nodded.
“It is. It somehow worked!”
Lori nodded.
“I still feel the magic in my blood, like some sort of humming but I think being distracted drowns it out.”
She slowly got up from her knees, Gabriel eagerly helped her up.
“Do you feel better?!”
He asked and she nodded.
“Brand new.”
She murmured as she examined herself and her dress.
“We should get back to the Summit.”
Gabriel looked like he had just been hit by a rock.
“After what happened?!?! Hell no!”
“We should. You know we should. They’re probably wondering what’s going on and Sabine is probably out there smugly
waiting for all hell to break loose.”
“I’m not allowing you go back out there!”
Lori gave him a look.
“If what you say about the Summit is true, then we have a lot more appearances to keep. We have to go back out there
now!”
She demanded as she forced opened the toilet stall. The door was mangled. She had manhandled it, then Gabriel had
also manhandled it and almost completely broke it when he forced it open, it was a wonder the door was still on its
hinges since he had a brutal reputation of breaking doors.
Outside, two women in front of the mirror looked mildly horrified seeing Gabriel in the ladies bathroom.
“My apologies ladies.”
Gabriel murmured as his face went red. Lori bit back a laughter but quickly turned to make sure Gabriel’s suit was fitted
properly before he left.
“I’ll be right behind you.”
She murmured and he nodded.
“I will wait outside.”
While ignoring the piercing glares of the women, Lori noticed she looked like a mess. She could have sworn she came in
with her purse but it was really nowhere to be found.
Good thing nothing important was in it. She thought as she looked around again and found it on the floor under the
sink, it’s content strewn on the floor. She managed to pick it up and gather her makeup.
Her hair was ruined, ruffling around and fighting didn’t do much good to it so she took out the half bun. It all looked
better down anyways.
She touched up her makeup and walked out of the bathroom.
True to his words. Gabriel was waiting at the entrance.
“Shall we?!”
He asked as he stretched his arm for her to hold.
“We shall.”
***************
Vara and Lyle were transferred in the same holding cell, briefly, while their cells were being cleaned.
It was the first time Vara had set her eyes on Lyle since the incident.
And if she thought she looked bad, he looked way worse.
He didn’t even react or flinch when he saw her, he had nothing but a blank and empty stare.
It was quite the surprise.
“Here we are again…”
Vara broke the silence.
Lyle had been put in silver handcuffs and while Vara might have been ignorant she knew that they did it to prevent any
altercation between the two of them.
After all she did kill his brother.
Lyle slowly raised his head. Days in the cell had made his hair overgrown, giving him a shaggy beard and mustache.
He looked like a wild homeless man.
“You killed my brother.”
Vara shook her head.
“It was you I meant to kill.”
“But you still killed him.“
He persisted. His voice was like sandpaper, roughy, scraggly.
“He was in the way.”
Lyle scoffed.
“You pointed the gun at him. Not me.”
That was true. She did point the gun at him.
“Does it matter again now?”
She finally asked and Lyle nodded.
“It does. Always would.”
“You betrayed my Alpha.”
She attacked.
Lyle scoffed.
“Sabine was a nutcase. I tried… many times to reason with her.. but she clearly had other goals and plans that didn’t
have to do with me.”
“That wouldn’t have happened if you didn’t run away.”
“I know I’m weak… and days alone might have made my memories foggy, but do not confuse me for a fool Vara. She
had been planning to take me out for a while.”
Yes. She was. But only because of how unreliable Lyle was becoming.
He included his brother. He became irrational. He did things without consulting Sabine.
He brought everything upon them.
“If only you had followed the plan…”
“Doesn’t matter anymore now does it?”
He answered.
Vara turned her face away.
The cell was small, with only one window that was so high… it was impossible to reach. And the window didn’t even
provide a look outdoors or brought in light… it probably led to another room outside.
“Do you know what they’ll do to you?”
He asked and she shrugged.
“Probably kill me when they find out I’m no use to them…”
“And you? What will they do to you?”
Lyle sighed.
“My mother is the only reason I’m still alive… but unfortunately that’s as far as Gabriel is willing to let her interfere.”
“I am entirely at his mercy.”
Lyle didn’t sound bitter, or even angry or jealous. Just resignation. He was a man who was tired. A man who had had
enough.
Or was done with everything.
“Same..”
She murmured.
It was useless to hope for Sabine. Or that she would find a way to save her.
She just wished and desperately hoped that they killed her quickly.
That would be a relief.
***************
The conference hall fell silent as Lori and Gabriel walked in. Lori took in the sight before her. It was an enormous room.
Brightly lit with at least a hundred or more people packed in the spot. The two empty chairs left were easy to spot. And it
was theirs. Their entrance did not go unnoticed. The meeting had started already and they were the last ones to arrive.
All eyes were on them till they took their seats in the row in the front.
They both decided not to give any explanation or apologies. Lori was itching to see Sabine’s face in the back but decided
that she could wait.
Let them finish the meeting.
See if Sabine would stay.
They had barely settled in when they heard some scuffling. Lori turned and saw Sabine making her way for the exit.
“She’s getting away…”
She murmured and Gabriel stiffened.
“Leave her.”
“Are you sure?!”
She asked and he nodded.
“Our fight with her will always remain. But today… today isn’t the day.”
“Gabriel.”
Lori called out again. Mildly confused by his change of attitude.
Barely two hours ago he wanted to strangle her, now he was just letting her walk away freely.
She didn’t understand it.
She didn’t understand why yet.
